NDA & CDS Exam Guide: How to Join the Indian Armed Forces as an Officer

A career as an officer in the Indian Armed Forces offers what few jobs can: honour, adventure, leadership from day one, and lifelong security. The two most popular gateways are the NDA (National Defence Academy) exam after Class 12 and the CDS (Combined Defence Services) exam after graduation. Both are conducted by UPSC twice a year.

1. NDA vs CDS: Which Path Is for You?

• NDA: For candidates aged 16.5-19.5 years who have passed/are appearing in Class 12. Physics and Maths in 10+2 are required for Air Force and Navy. Both male and female candidates can now apply.
• CDS: For graduates aged roughly 19-25 (varies by academy). Gateways include IMA (Army), INA (Navy), AFA (Air Force), and OTA (short service commission, open to women).

2. NDA Exam Pattern

• Mathematics: 300 marks, 120 questions, Class 11-12 level
• General Ability Test (GAT): 600 marks - English (200) + General Knowledge covering Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Current Affairs (400)
• Negative marking: One-third of the marks per wrong answer
• SSB Interview: 900 marks over a 5-day assessment

3. CDS Exam Pattern

CDS has three papers of 100 marks each - English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics (Maths is not required for OTA). The standard of Maths is Class 10 level, making it easier than NDA Maths but with tougher competition from graduates.

4. Preparation Strategy for the Written Exam

• Mathematics: NCERT Class 11-12 (NDA) or Class 10 (CDS) plus R.S. Aggarwal. Speed is critical - 120 questions in 150 minutes means about 75 seconds per question.
• English: Practice vocabulary, spotting errors, and comprehension daily. Word Power Made Easy is a classic for a reason.
• GK: Lucent's General Knowledge + NCERT Science (Class 9-10) + last 8-10 months of current affairs with focus on defence news, exercises, and awards.
• Solve at least 10 years of previous papers - UPSC repeats question patterns consistently.

5. The SSB Interview: Where Most Candidates Fail

The 5-day Services Selection Board (SSB) process tests your Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), not your academic knowledge:

• Day 1 - Screening: OIR test + Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT). More than half the candidates are screened out here.
• Day 2 - Psychology: TAT, WAT, SRT, and Self-Description tests
• Day 3-4 - GTO tasks: Group discussions, group planning, progressive group tasks, command task
• Day 5 - Conference: Final board decision

Be genuine - the SSB is designed to catch coached, artificial responses. Work on communication, general awareness, and physical fitness months in advance.

6. Physical and Medical Standards

Many recommended candidates lose their seat at the medical stage. Common rejection reasons include poor eyesight beyond permissible limits, flat feet, knock knees, and being overweight. Start running 5 km daily, fix your posture, and get a preliminary medical check-up done early.

7. Life After Selection

NDA cadets train for 3 years at Khadakwasla (earning a JNU degree) followed by academy-specific training. A newly commissioned Lieutenant earns roughly ₹56,100-₹1,77,500 (Level 10) plus Military Service Pay and allowances - along with subsidised housing, medical care, and unmatched prestige.
