1. What is a Mineral?
A mineral is a NATURALLY OCCURRING, INORGANIC substance with a DEFINITE chemical composition and crystal structure. Minerals are FINITE and NON-RENEWABLE.
1.1 Classification of Minerals

2. Distribution of Major Minerals in India
2.1 Iron Ore
- Most IMPORTANT metallic mineral.
- Four types: Magnetite (best, 72% iron), Hematite (most used, 60–70%), Limonite, Siderite.
- Major belts:
- Odisha-Jharkhand belt: Badampahar, Mayurbhanj (Odisha), Singhbhum (Jharkhand). HIGH-grade hematite.
- Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur belt (MP, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra): Bailadila (Chhattisgarh) — VERY high-grade, exported to Japan.
- Ballari-Chitradurga-Chikmagalur belt (Karnataka): Kudremukh (now closed) — magnetite.
- Maharashtra-Goa belt: Lateritic ores, exported.
- AP: Minor deposits in Anantapur, Kurnool districts (not major producer).
2.2 Manganese
- Used in STEEL MAKING (hardening agent), batteries, chemicals.
- Major: Odisha (largest), Karnataka, MP, Maharashtra, AP.
- AP: Srikakulam, Vizianagaram districts.
2.3 Bauxite (Aluminium Ore)
- Lightest metal after processing. Used in AIRCRAFT, utensils, electrical.
- Conditions: Tropical climate + laterite rock.
- Major: Odisha (largest — Kalahandi, Koraput), Gujarat, Jharkhand, MP, Chhattisgarh.
- AP: VISAKHAPATNAM district (Anantagiri, Galikonda, Chintapalli). Bauxite deposits in Eastern Ghats.
2.4 Mica
- Excellent DIELECTRIC properties — insulator. Used in electronics, cosmetics, paints.
- India is the WORLD'S largest producer.
- Major belt: Jharkhand (Koderma — Mica Capital), Bihar, Rajasthan, AP.
- AP: Nellore district (Nellore Mica Belt). HIGH-quality mica.

3. Conservation of Minerals
'Minerals are FINITE. At CURRENT rate, India's coal reserves will last ~150 years, petroleum ~50 years. CONSERVATION is NON-NEGOTIABLE.'

Common Mistake: Students often think 'conventional = better'. Actually, non-conventional sources are the FUTURE. Conventional fossil fuels are the PAST — finite and polluting.

- Mangampeta (Kadapa) Barytes: Largest SINGLE barytes deposit in the WORLD (used for oil drilling). AP produces ~95% of India's barytes.
- Godavari coal belt: Pranahita-Godavari valley (Khammam, East Godavari, West Godavari). SINGARENI Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) — major coal supplier to South India.
- Bauxite (Visakhapatnam): Eastern Ghats bauxite deposits — among the largest in India. Vizag Steel Plant uses local iron ore.
- Mica (Nellore): High-quality muscovite mica. Exported.
- Limestone: ABUNDANT (Guntur, Kurnool, Prakasam) — feeds cement plants.
- Minor minerals: Beach sands (Visakhapatnam) — monazite, ilmenite (rare earth elements).
