1. Introduction
Numbers help us count, measure, label, and compare. In this chapter you will learn to work with very large numbers, understand their place values, estimate quantities, and read Roman numerals.

2. Comparing Numbers
Rule 1: More Digits = Larger Number

Rule 2: Same Digits — Compare Left to Right
Compare the leftmost digit first. If they are equal, move to the next.
Example: Which is bigger: 45,678 or 46,678?
- Both have 5 digits
- Compare left: 4 = 4
- Compare next: 5 < 6
- Therefore 46,678 is larger
Ascending and Descending Order
- Ascending: smallest to largest (e.g. 5, 12, 25, 38)
- Descending: largest to smallest (e.g. 38, 25, 12, 5)

3. Place Value — Indian System
The Indian system groups digits as: Ones → Tens → Hundreds → Thousands → Ten Thousands → Lakhs → Ten Lakhs → Crores → Ten Crores

Groups of THREE digits: Ones → Tens → Hundreds → Thousands → Ten Thousands → Hundred Thousands → Millions → Ten Millions → Hundred Millions

5. Large Numbers — Up to 10 Digits
A 10-digit number in the Indian system goes up to Arab (1,00,00,00,000).

6. Estimation and Rounding
Estimating means finding a number close to the exact value. Rounding is a formal method.
Rounding to Nearest Tens
- Look at the ones digit
- If ones digit < 5, round DOWN (tens digit stays, ones = 0)
- If ones digit >= 5, round UP (tens digit +1, ones = 0)

7. Roman Numerals

Rules
- Repeat to add: I = 1, II = 2, III = 3 (but NOT IIII — 4 is IV)
- Smaller after larger = add: VI = 5+1 = 6, XI = 10+1 = 11
- Smaller before larger = subtract: IV = 5-1 = 4, IX = 10-1 = 9
- Only I, X, C can appear before a larger digit for subtraction
- V, L, D are NEVER repeated or subtracted

Worked Example 1 (Population Comparison)
Andhra Pradesh has a population of approximately 4,93,86,799. Telangana has approximately 3,50,03,674. Which state has more people?
Solution:
- Write vertically: 4,93,86,799 and 3,50,03,674
- Compare left: 4 crores vs 3 crores → 4 > 3
- Therefore Andhra Pradesh has a larger population.
Worked Example 2 (School Budget)
A school in Vijayawada has a budget of Rs. 4,78,500 for supplies. Estimate this to the nearest lakh.
Solution: 4,78,500. Look at ten thousands digit = 7. 7 >= 5, so round UP. Answer: Rs. 5,00,000.
Worked Example 3 (Olympic Medals)
Write the year 2024 in Roman numerals.
Solution: 2024 = 2000 + 20 + 4 = MM + XX + IV = MMXXIV.
9. Common Mistakes — Fix Them Now
