2. The Moon — Earth's Natural Satellite
2.1 Lunar Phases
'The Moon does NOT produce its own light — we see it because SUNLIGHT falls on it and reflects to Earth.'
The Moon completes one revolution around the Earth in about 27.3 days (sidereal month). The PHASES of the Moon are caused by the CHANGING POSITION of the Moon relative to the Earth and Sun.

2.2 The Moon's Surface
- No atmosphere, no liquid water, no weather.
- Covered with CRATERS (caused by meteorite impacts).
- The dark patches we see are called MARIA (Latin for 'seas') — actually DARK, FLAT plains of solidified lava.
- Temperature: Daytime ~127°C, Nighttime ~-173°C.

3. Constellations

Finding the Pole Star (Polaris)
'For centuries, travellers have used the Pole Star to find NORTH. It is a FIXED point in the northern sky — all other stars appear to revolve around it.'
How to find it: Locate the Great Bear (Ursa Major). The two stars at the end of the 'bowl' of the Big Dipper are called POINTER STARS. Draw an imaginary line through them — it points directly to the POLE STAR.
AP Board Context
'The Kuchipudi and classical dance traditions of Andhra Pradesh describe the NAKSHATRAS (lunar mansions) — the 27 constellations through which the Moon passes during its monthly journey.
