This is one of the most counterintuitive facts in geography. Earth orbits the Sun in an ellipse, not a perfect circle. PERIHELION (closest point to Sun, ~147 million km) occurs around January 3. APHELION (farthest, ~152 million km) occurs around July 4. The distance variation is only about 3% — too small to cause seasons. So WHY is it winter in the Northern Hemisphere in January? Because seasons are caused by AXIAL TILT, not distance. In January, Earth's axis tilts the Northern Hemisphere AWAY from the Sun — sunlight hits at a low angle (less direct, less intense), days are short. Result: winter. The 3% distance increase in July is more than offset by the direct angle of sunlight on the Northern Hemisphere — making summer warmer in July despite being farther from the Sun. The Southern Hemisphere experiences OPPOSITE seasons simultaneously.

STANDARD MERIDIAN of India = 82½°E (passes through Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh). FORMULA: time difference = 4 minutes per degree of longitude. East of Greenwich = AHEAD of GMT. Calculation: 82.5° × 4 min/° = 330 min = 5 hours 30 minutes. So IST = GMT + 5:30. EXAMPLE: when it is 12:00 noon GMT in London, it is 5:30 PM in India. Why ONE TIME ZONE for India? India spans ~30° of longitude (from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, ~2 hours of solar time). But India uses a SINGLE standard time for administrative simplicity. Result: in Arunachal Pradesh, the Sun rises around 4 AM IST in summer (while it's still dark in Mumbai by clock). USA spans 4-5 time zones; Russia spans 11. India's choice of one is unique among large countries.

Both the outer and inner core are made of iron and nickel. Both are EXTREMELY HOT (4,000-5,500°C, hotter than the surface of the Sun). The difference is PRESSURE. INNER CORE: at Earth's centre, pressure is so immense (about 3.6 million times atmospheric pressure) that even at extreme temperatures, the iron-nickel atoms cannot move freely → SOLID. OUTER CORE: pressure is lower (still very high — about 1.4 million atmospheres). At these conditions, iron-nickel can melt → LIQUID. WHY THIS MATTERS: the liquid outer core's convection currents (heated metal flowing) generate ELECTRIC CURRENTS, which in turn create Earth's MAGNETIC FIELD. This magnetic field protects life on Earth from solar wind and cosmic radiation. Without the liquid outer core, Earth would have no magnetic field, no magnetosphere, and life as we know it would be impossible.

OZONE (O₃) is formed when UV radiation from the Sun breaks oxygen molecules (O₂) into atoms, which then combine with O₂ to form O₃. This reaction requires direct UV radiation — which is most abundant in the STRATOSPHERE (10-50 km altitude). The ozone layer at this altitude absorbs harmful UV rays (UV-B and UV-C), protecting life on Earth. In the TROPOSPHERE (where we live), there is little ozone formation because most UV doesn't reach the surface (the stratospheric ozone already absorbed it). When ozone DOES form in the troposphere (e.g., from car exhaust + sunlight in cities), it is a POLLUTANT and lung irritant. So: stratospheric ozone = good (UV shield), tropospheric ozone = bad (smog). CFCs (refrigerants) destroyed stratospheric ozone in the 20th century — the Montreal Protocol (1987) phased them out.

AP lies entirely within the TORRID (Tropical) ZONE — between the Equator (0°) and Tropic of Cancer (23½°N). Specifically AP spans 12°41′N to 19°07′N. CLIMATE IMPLICATIONS: (1) Year-round HOT climate — no extreme cold. Average annual temperature 26-30°C. (2) Two monsoons — SW Monsoon (Jun-Sep) and Retreating NE Monsoon (Oct-Nov) — both providing rainfall. (3) Bay of Bengal CYCLONES strike the coast in October-November. AGRICULTURE: (1) Suitable for tropical crops — rice (kharif), sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, coconut, mango, banana. (2) Two cropping seasons (Kharif during SW monsoon, Rabi during winter). (3) Krishna and Godavari deltas are India's most productive rice-growing regions. The location is a fundamental advantage for AP's agriculture and overall economy.
