Sets

Every later chapter in this book — functions, trigonometry, probability, even calculus — is written in a language, and that language is set notation. This chapter builds that language from a single idea (a well-defined collection of objects) up through subsets, Venn diagrams, and the operations that combine sets, ending with De Morgan's laws. One formula that shows up in almost every coaching handout for this chapter is not actually in the 2026-27 book at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 1.

Relations and Functions

A relation is any association between two sets at all — as loose or as strange as you like. A function is the one, very specific kind of relation where every input has exactly one output, and that single restriction is what makes it possible to build the rest of mathematics on top of it. One classification almost every coaching handout drills for this chapter — one-one, onto, bijective — has actually moved to Class 12. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 2.

Trigonometric Functions

The unit-circle definition extends sine and cosine, first met as ratios inside a right triangle, to every real number — including negative numbers and numbers far larger than 360 degrees. One topic many coaching sheets drill hard for this chapter, the general solution of trigonometric equations, is graded formatively only under the 2026-27 CBSE syllabus and never appears in this chapter's own exercises. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 3.

Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations

The equation x² + 1 = 0 has no real solution, so this chapter builds a new number, i = √(-1), and a new algebra around it. Despite the chapter's own name, actually solving ax² + bx + c = 0 for complex roots — and the polar form its own section heading promises — are both graded formatively only under the 2026-27 CBSE syllabus. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 4.

Linear Inequalities

Not every real relationship is an equality — Ravi's ₹200 rice budget and Reshma's stationery shopping both translate into inequalities, not equations. This chapter builds the two rules for solving them, chief among them the sign-flip rule. The entire two-variable graphical half-plane method most coaching material drills for this chapter — plotting ax+by+c>0 as a shaded region — is graded formatively only and does not appear in the current book at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 5.

Permutations and Combinations

How many 3-digit sequences would you need to try on a forgotten suitcase lock? This chapter builds the counting tools to answer that without listing every possibility — the multiplication principle, factorials, permutations for when order matters, and combinations for when it doesn't. Unlike the last few chapters, almost everything here is still summatively examined — the one exception is circular arrangements, a coaching-material staple that isn't in the current book at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 6.

Binomial Theorem

(98)^5 by hand? The Binomial Theorem writes it as (100-2)^5 and expands it in six lines using nCr coefficients, no repeated multiplication needed. This is the shortest chapter in the book — nine pages, one exercise, one miscellaneous exercise — and the topic most coaching material assumes it covers, finding a specific term via the general term formula, is not part of the current syllabus at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 7.

Sequences and Series

This chapter's own name is bigger than what it teaches. Arithmetic Progression was already covered in Class 10 and isn't re-taught here — this chapter is really about Geometric Progressions, their sums, geometric means, and the AM-GM relationship. One genuine surprise: the current book never actually derives the sum of an infinite GP, even though CBSE's own syllabus names it as examinable. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 8.

Straight Lines

How does GPS turn "the shortest distance from a point to a road" into a single formula? Straight Lines builds the full algebraic toolkit for a line — slope, five distinct equation forms, the angle between two lines, and the perpendicular-distance formula. One of the six forms coaching material lists, the Normal Form, is not part of the current book at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 9.

Conic Sections

Slice a cone at different angles and the same surface gives you a circle, an ellipse, a parabola, or a hyperbola. This chapter derives the standard equation of each from its own defining distance property, covering circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas in full — with no formative-only carve-out this time, unlike Straight Lines next door. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 10.

Introduction to Three Dimensional Geometry

Two coordinates were enough to locate a point on a page. A point in a room — or a plane in the sky — needs three. This chapter sets up coordinate axes, coordinate planes, and the eight octants in space, then extends the familiar distance formula by one more squared term. The section formula, despite what older material teaches here, is not part of the current book at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 11.

Limits and Derivatives

Calculus begins with a single question — what does a function approach, not what does it equal? This chapter builds limits from the ground up (left/right-hand limits, the algebra of limits, the standard algebraic and trigonometric limits) and then defines the derivative as a limit, deriving the power rule and the trigonometric derivatives from first principles. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 12 — the whole 8-mark Calculus unit in one chapter.

Statistics

Two batsmen can average the exact same score and still play completely different games — one reliably steady, the other wildly streaky. This chapter builds the tools that tell them apart: mean deviation, variance, and standard deviation, for both raw data and frequency tables. Coefficient of Variation, despite what older material teaches here, is not part of the current book at all. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 13.

Probability

This chapter doesn't start from scratch — it opens by treating "random experiment" and "sample space" as things you already know, and goes straight to events, the algebra of events, and an axiom-based definition of probability. That opening choice isn't an accident: those foundational ideas are formative-only this year, not new teaching. CBSE Class 11 Mathematics Chapter 14 — the second half of the 12-mark Statistics and Probability unit.
