Equal Groups — Class 4 Mathematics (CBSE)
From the current NCERT Maths Mela Grade 4 book, Chapter 9. Equal groups are the key to multiplication and division.
1. Why this chapter matters
When we have many equal groups, multiplication counts them quickly, and division shares a total into equal groups. These are used in shopping, packing, and sharing every single day.
2. Core ideas
Idea 1 — Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups
3 groups of 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, written 3 × 4 = 12.
Method 2 — Arrays, skip counting, and doubling
An array is rows × columns (3 rows of 4 = 12). Skip count (4, 8, 12) or double (double 6 = 12) to multiply fast.
Skill 3 — Division splits into equal groups
12 ÷ 4 = 3 (12 shared into groups of 4 makes 3 groups). Multiplication and division are linked: 3 × 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
3. Worked examples
Example 1: Write 5 + 5 + 5 as a multiplication.
5 + 5 + 5 = 3 × 5 = 15.
Example 2: An array has 4 rows of 6. How many in all?
4 × 6 = 24.
Example 3: Share 24 pencils equally among 6 children.
24 ÷ 6 = 4 pencils each (because 6 × 4 = 24).
4. Activity corner
Make an array of buttons (for example, 3 rows of 5). Then share a group equally among your friends. Write:
- Your array and its multiplication fact
- The division fact for sharing
- The maths idea (equal groups link × and ÷)
5. Common mistakes
- Mistake: Making groups that are not equal. Fix: Multiplication and division need equal groups.
- Mistake: Writing 3 × 4 as 3 + 4. Fix: 3 × 4 means 4 + 4 + 4 (three 4s) = 12.
- Mistake: Forgetting the link between × and ÷. Fix: If 6 × 4 = 24, then 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6.
6. How to write better answers
- Find the number of groups and the size of each.
- Write the multiplication fact (groups × size).
- For sharing, write the division fact (total ÷ groups).
- Use the link between × and ÷ to check.
7. Practice set
- Write 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 as a multiplication.
- Find 4 × 7.
- An array has 5 rows of 3. How many in all?
- Share 20 sweets equally among 5 children.
- If 7 × 3 = 21, what is 21 ÷ 7?
- Double 9.
8. Answer key
- 4 × 6 = 24.
-
- 5 × 3 = 15.
- 20 ÷ 5 = 4 each.
- 21 ÷ 7 = 3.
-
9. Quick revision
- Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups (3 × 4 = 12).
- Use arrays, skip counting, and doubling to multiply.
- Division splits a total into equal groups (12 ÷ 4 = 3).
- Multiplication and division are linked (6 × 4 = 24, so 24 ÷ 6 = 4).
- Groups must be equal.
