1. Out of Africa — The Human Journey

Where Did Humans Come From?

Fossil and DNA evidence shows: ALL humans alive today descended from a small population that lived in AFRICA about 200,000 years ago. Around 70,000 years ago: a small group of humans LEFT Africa. Over tens of thousands of years, their descendants SPREAD across the globe — to Asia, Australia, Europe, and eventually the Americas.

How Do We Know?

  • FOSSILS: Bones of our ancestors, buried and preserved.
  • DNA: The genetic code we carry inside us. 'Every human on Earth is descended from a single woman — "Mitochondrial Eve" — who lived in Africa. We are all, literally, ONE FAMILY.'
  • Artifacts: Stone tools, cave paintings, evidence of fire use.

'The story of humanity is a story of MOVEMENT. We walked. We sailed. We crossed mountains, deserts, and oceans. By 15,000 years ago, humans had reached EVERY continent except Antarctica.'


2. The First Farmers — The Neolithic Revolution (~10,000 BCE)

From Hunting to Farming

For ~190,000 years, ALL humans were HUNTER-GATHERERS. They moved with the seasons. They lived in small bands. Then — about 10,000 years ago — something CHANGED. In the 'Fertile Crescent' (modern Middle East), humans began to: PLANT seeds → GROW crops. TAME animals → KEEP herds. BUILD permanent SETTLEMENTS → live in VILLAGES.

'This was the NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION — the most PROFOUND CHANGE in human history.'

Why Did It Happen?

  • Climate warmed after the last Ice Age. Populations grew. Wild grains (wheat, barley) were ABUNDANT in the Fertile Crescent. 'People didn't just "invent" farming. It EMERGED at the intersection of ENVIRONMENT, POPULATION, and OPPORTUNITY.'

Consequences — The Birth of 'Civilisation'

  • FOOD SURPLUS → Not everyone had to farm → SPECIALISATION: potters, weavers, priests, rulers, soldiers.
  • LARGER POPULATIONS → Villages grew into towns. Towns grew into CITIES.
  • SOCIAL HIERARCHY — Some people became richer and more powerful than others.
  • WRITING — Needed to record taxes, trade, laws. 'CIVILISATION was born — for better and for worse.'

Common Pattern — Why River Valleys?

  • WATER: For drinking, irrigation, transport.
  • FERTILE SOIL: Annual floods deposited rich SILT.
  • 'Geography shaped history. The first civilisations did not arise RANDOMLY. They arose where the LAND made settled agriculture POSSIBLE — and SURPLUS made cities, writing, and states INEVITABLE.'

Using Scale on Maps

A SCALE tells you the ratio between distance on the map and distance in real life. '1 cm = 100 km means: every cm you measure on the map represents 100 km on the actual ground.'


5. What Is 'Civilisation'? — A Critical Look

'Civilisation' comes from the Latin 'civitas' — city. But the word carries BAGGAGE. European colonisers often described themselves as 'civilised' and the people they colonised as 'uncivilised,' 'savage,' or 'barbarian.' This was used to JUSTIFY conquest, slavery, and cultural destruction.

The Debate

  • Traditional view: 'Civilisation' = cities, writing, government, technology. Hunter-gatherers = 'primitive.'
  • Critical view: Hunter-gatherer societies had rich cultures, sophisticated knowledge of their environment, and complex social structures. They were not 'less evolved.' They just organised their societies DIFFERENTLY.

'In this unit, we use the term "civilisation" to describe societies with cities, writing, and states — but we remember that these societies are not MORALLY SUPERIOR to any other way of living. The MONGOLS created the largest land empire in history. The GREEKS invented democracy — and owned slaves. EVERY civilisation has achievements AND atrocities.'

Placing BCE events in the wrong order (e.g. writing 500 BCE before 3000 BCE on a timeline)
BCE numbers count DOWN toward 0 as time moves FORWARD. So 3000 BCE is EARLIER (further left on a timeline) than 500 BCE. Think of it as a number line extending in the negative direction: −3000 is further from 0 than −500. Always check: 'Which number is larger? That event is older.'
WATCH OUT
Describing hunter-gatherers as 'primitive' or 'less advanced' without qualification
IB MYP explicitly challenges this assumption. Hunter-gatherers often had better nutrition (diverse diet), worked fewer hours (~4-5 per day vs early farmers' 8+), and had no crop-failure famines. The Neolithic Revolution brought BOTH benefits (cities, technology) AND costs (disease from animals, inequality, environmental stress). Use descriptive language: 'different organisation' rather than 'less advanced.'

Physical maps show natural features: mountains, rivers, deserts. Political maps show human-made boundaries: countries, cities, borders. Yes — IB MYP explicitly asks students to avoid value-laden judgements. 'Primitive' implies inferiority. Instead, use: 'hunter-gatherer societies organised themselves differently from agricultural societies.' You can discuss trade-offs (e.g. better nutrition vs. lower population density) but frame them as differences, not a hierarchy.

Latitude lines run HORIZONTALLY (like the rungs of a ladder) and measure HOW FAR NORTH or SOUTH of the Equator you are. Longitude lines run VERTICALLY and measure HOW FAR EAST or WEST of the Prime Meridian (Greenwich, UK) you are. Together, any location on Earth has a unique coordinate: e.g. Delhi is approximately 28°N, 77°E.
