Me and My Family
1. What Is a Family?
A FAMILY is a group of people who are RELATED to each other and live TOGETHER (or stay in touch).
'Your family is the people who LOVE you, take CARE of you, and SUPPORT you. Family is where you BELONG.'
2. Types of Families
Nuclear Family:
A SMALL family with PARENTS and their CHILDREN.
'A nuclear family has: Father, Mother, and Children (brothers and sisters).'
Example: Riya lives with her mother, father, and younger brother. That is a NUCLEAR family.
Joint Family:
A LARGE family where GRANDPARENTS, parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins all live together.
'A joint family is like a BIG family team where everyone helps each other!'
Example: Rahul lives with his grandparents, parents, uncle, aunt, and cousin. That is a JOINT family.
| Type | Members | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Nuclear | Parents + children | More PRIVACY, independent |
| Joint | Grandparents + parents + children + uncles/aunts | More SUPPORT, shared work |
3. Family Members and Relationships
| Relation | Who They Are |
|---|---|
| Father / Papa / Dad | Your parent — male |
| Mother / Mummy / Mom | Your parent — female |
| Brother | A male sibling — share the same parents |
| Sister | A female sibling — share the same parents |
| Grandfather / Dada / Nana | Your father's or mother's father |
| Grandmother / Dadi / Nani | Your father's or mother's mother |
| Uncle / Chacha / Mama | Your parent's brother |
| Aunt / Chachi / Mami | Your parent's sister or uncle's wife |
| Cousin | Your uncle's or aunt's child |
| Nephew | Your brother's or sister's son |
| Nice | Your brother's or sister's daughter |
4. Roles in a Family
Every family member has a ROLE — things they do for the family.
| Family Member | Role |
|---|---|
| Father | Works to EARN money, helps with decisions |
| Mother | Takes care of HOME and family, may also work |
| Grandparents | Share WISDOM, tell stories, help care for children |
| Children | Go to school, HELP at home, respect elders |
'In a good family, EVERYONE helps. Children can help by setting the table, keeping their room tidy, and being KIND.'
5. Sharing and Caring
Why Sharing Is Important:
- It makes others HAPPY.
- It builds TRUST.
- It shows you CARE.
How to Share and Care:
| At Home | At School |
|---|---|
| Share your toys with siblings | Share your lunch with a friend |
| Help set the table | Share your crayons |
| Listen to grandparents' stories | Help a classmate who is struggling |
| Take care of younger siblings | Say THANK YOU and PLEASE |
'Family is not just about BLOOD. It is about PEOPLE who love and care for you. Even friends can feel like FAMILY!'
6. Family Tree
A FAMILY TREE is a DIAGRAM that shows how family members are RELATED.
'Your grandparents are at the TOP. Your parents are in the MIDDLE. You and your siblings are at the BOTTOM.'
Example:
Grandfather ─── Grandmother
│
┌──────┴──────┐
Father ─── Mother Uncle ─── Aunt
│ │
├──── You ────┤ Cousin
Brother Sister
7. Common Mistakes
- Calling all relatives 'uncle' or 'aunty': 'Your father's brother is your UNCLE. Your mother's brother is also your UNCLE. They have different names in different Indian languages, but in English, both are "uncle."'
- Not knowing family relationships: 'Your cousin's mother is your AUNT (she is either your mother's sister or your father's sister-in-law).'
- Thinking ONLY blood relations are family: 'People who LOVE and CARE for you — even close friends — can FEEL like family.'
8. Key Facts to Remember
- 'A NUCLEAR family has parents and children. A JOINT family has grandparents, parents, children, and other relatives.'
- 'Every family member has a ROLE — everyone contributes.'
- 'SHARING and CARING make a family STRONG.'
- 'Respecting elders is an important value.'
- 'A FAMILY TREE shows how everyone is related.'
