Social Studies — History, Geography & Civics
Part 1 — History: Ancient India & Great Empires
The Indus Valley Civilisation (~2600–1900 BCE)
- One of the world's OLDEST cities — Harappa and Mohenjodaro.
- AMAZING town planning: Straight roads. Houses made of BAKED BRICKS. Every house connected to DRAINS. 'The drainage system was better than in many modern towns!'
- People: Farmers, traders, potters, bead-makers. Traded with far-away lands (Mesopotamia).
- The GREAT BATH of Mohenjodaro — a large water tank probably used for religious bathing.
- Why did it end? Climate changed. Rivers shifted. The cities were slowly ABANDONED.
The Vedic Age (~1500–600 BCE)
- Named after the VEDAS — India's oldest books. Written in SANSKRIT.
- The Rig Veda: Hymns to gods — Indra (rain), Agni (fire), Surya (sun).
- Society: The beginning of the CASTE SYSTEM (Varna) — Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (traders/farmers), Shudras (servants).
- The GURUKUL: Children lived with a GURU (teacher) and studied the Vedas.
The Mauryan Empire (~321–185 BCE) — India's FIRST Empire
- Chandragupta Maurya: Founded the empire. Helped by his clever advisor, CHANAKYA.
- Ashoka the Great (268–232 BCE): The greatest Mauryan ruler.
- He conquered KALINGA in a terrible war. He was HORRIFIED by the bloodshed. 'Hundreds of thousands died. Ashoka changed forever.'
- He embraced BUDDHISM and the policy of DHAMMA — non-violence, kindness, tolerance.
- He carved his messages on ROCKS and PILLARS across India. 'Ashoka's edicts are the FIRST written records we have from an Indian ruler speaking directly to his people.'
- The ASHOKA CHAKRA is on the Indian flag. The LION CAPITAL of Sarnath is India's national emblem.
The Gupta Empire (~320–550 CE) — 'The Golden Age'
- A time of PEACE. Art, literature, and science FLOURISHED.
- Kalidasa: The greatest Sanskrit poet — wrote 'Shakuntala.'
- Aryabhata: The great mathematician and astronomer — he said the Earth is ROUND and rotates on its axis. 'He was right — over a thousand years before Europe accepted it!'
- The invention of the DECIMAL SYSTEM and the concept of ZERO.
Part 2 — Geography: Maps, Weather & India's Land
Globes and Maps
- A GLOBE is a small MODEL of the Earth. It's SPHERICAL — like the Earth.
- A MAP is a flat drawing of the Earth or part of it.
- Continents (7): Asia (LARGEST). Africa. North America. South America. Antarctica. Europe. Australia (SMALLEST).
- Oceans (5): Pacific (LARGEST & DEEPEST). Atlantic. Indian. Southern. Arctic.
- Equator: An imaginary line around the MIDDLE. Divides Earth into NORTHERN and SOUTHERN hemispheres.
Weather and Climate
- Weather: What's happening RIGHT NOW — hot, cold, rainy, windy. Changes DAILY.
- Climate: The AVERAGE weather over a LONG TIME (30+ years).
Physical Features of India
- The Himalayas (NORTH): The 'ROOF OF THE WORLD.' Highest peaks. Mt Everest is in the Himalayas (Nepal).
- The Northern Plains: Flat. Fertile. Densely populated. The GANGA and YAMUNA flow here.
- The Thar Desert (WEST — Rajasthan): Hot. Dry. Camel rides.
- The Deccan Plateau (SOUTH): Old, rocky land.
- Coastal Plains: Along the Arabian Sea (WEST) and Bay of Bengal (EAST).
Part 3 — Civics: How India Is Governed
India — The World's LARGEST DEMOCRACY
- A DEMOCRACY means: government BY the people. Citizens CHOOSE their leaders through ELECTIONS.
- India became a REPUBLIC on January 26, 1950. The CONSTITUTION is the SUPREME LAW.
The Three Levels of Government
| Level | Who Governs | Head |
|---|---|---|
| Central (National) | New Delhi | PRIME MINISTER |
| State | State Capital | CHIEF MINISTER |
| Local | Your village, town, or city | Sarpanch (village) / Mayor (city) |
The Central Government
- Parliament = President + Lok Sabha + Rajya Sabha.
- The Prime Minister is the HEAD of the government. Leads the party with the MOST elected members in the Lok Sabha.
- President is the HEAD of STATE. Elected by MPs and MLAs.
The Panchayati Raj — Local Self-Government
- Gram Panchayat (village level). Head = Sarpanch.
- Panchayat Samiti (block level). Zilla Parishad (district level).
- 'The Panchayat takes care of YOUR village — water, roads, streetlights, schools. The people you elect are your NEIGHBOURS. They know YOUR problems.'
- ONE-THIRD of seats are reserved for WOMEN. 'This means millions of women are elected leaders — one of the largest numbers anywhere in the world!'
Our Fundamental Rights
- Right to EQUALITY. Right to FREEDOM (speech, assembly). Right against EXPLOITATION. Right to FREEDOM OF RELIGION. Cultural and Educational Rights. Right to CONSTITUTIONAL REMEDIES.
- 'These rights PROTECT every Indian. No government can take them away.'
Our Fundamental Duties
- Respect the Constitution and National Flag. Protect India's unity. Protect the ENVIRONMENT. 'Rights and duties go TOGETHER. My right to free speech comes with the duty to speak responsibly.'
