Our Earth
1. The Earth — Our Unique Planet
The Earth is the THIRD planet from the Sun and the ONLY known planet with LIFE.
'Of ALL the planets in our solar system, Earth is SPECIAL. It has LIQUID WATER, a BREATHABLE atmosphere, and a MAGNETIC FIELD that protects us from solar radiation. As far as we KNOW, there is NO other place like it in the UNIVERSE.'
Earth Facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Diameter | About 12,742 km |
| Surface | About 71% water, 29% land |
| Rotation | Spins once every 24 hours (one DAY) |
| Revolution | Orbits Sun once every 365.25 days (one YEAR) |
| Tilt | Tilted at 23.5° — causes SEASONS |
2. The Seven Continents
A CONTINENT is a LARGE, continuous mass of land on Earth. There are SEVEN continents.
| Continent | Size (Area) | Population | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asia | LARGEST — 44 million km² | MOST populous — 4.7 billion | India, China, Russia. Himalayas (Mt Everest). Ganga, Yangtze rivers. |
| Africa | 30 million km² | 1.4 billion | Sahara Desert (LARGEST hot desert). Nile River (LONGEST river). |
| North America | 24 million km² | 600 million | USA, Canada, Mexico. Rocky Mountains. Great Lakes. |
| South America | 18 million km² | 430 million | Amazon River and Forest (LARGEST rainforest). Andes Mountains. |
| Antarctica | 14 million km² | 0 permanent residents | ICECOVERED. Coldest place on Earth. Research stations only. |
| Europe | 10 million km² | 740 million | Alps Mountains. Many COUNTRIES (over 40). |
| Australia | 8.5 million km² (SMALLEST) | 26 million | Island continent. Great Barrier Reef. Mostly DESERT. |
Amazing Continent Facts
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Asia is HUGE | Asia covers 30% of all land on Earth |
| Antarctica is a desert | It gets LESS than 200 mm of precipitation per year |
| Australia is also a country | It is the ONLY continent that is also ONE country |
| Africa straddles the equator | It is the ONLY continent that lies in ALL four hemispheres |
'Asia is SO large that it is bigger than ALL the other continents COMBINED except Africa! Russia alone spans TWO continents — Europe and Asia.'
3. The Five Oceans
An OCEAN is a LARGE, continuous body of SALT water.
| Ocean | Size | Deepest Point | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pacific Ocean | LARGEST — 165 million km² | Mariana Trench (11 km deep) | The DEEPEST ocean. Ring of Fire (volcanoes). |
| Atlantic Ocean | 106 million km² | Puerto Rico Trench | SEPARATES the Americas from Europe and Africa. |
| Indian Ocean | 70 million km² | Java Trench | WARMEST ocean. Named after INDIA. |
| Southern Ocean | 20 million km² | South Sandwich Trench | Around ANTARCTICA. Very COLD. |
| Arctic Ocean | 14 million km² (SMALLEST) | Molloy Deep | FROZEN most of the year. At the NORTH POLE. |
Oceans and Continents Connection
'Every ocean is CONNECTED to every other ocean. The CONTINENTS are like giant islands in a SINGLE, interconnected world ocean. Water can travel from India to England WITHOUT touching land!'
4. Major Landforms
LANDFORMS are the natural shapes that make up the Earth's SURFACE.
Mountains
MOUNTAINS are landforms that rise HIGH above the surrounding land (usually 600+ metres).
| Type of Mountain | How Formed | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fold mountains | Two tectonic PLATES crash together, FOLDING the land | Himalayas, Alps, Andes |
| Block mountains | Cracks in the Earth's crust — some blocks rise, some FALL | Vosges (France), Sierra Nevada (USA) |
| Volcanic mountains | VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS build up layers of lava and ash | Mt Fuji (Japan), Mt Kilimanjaro (Africa) |
Plateaus
A PLATEAU is a FLAT, elevated landform. It is called a 'TABLELAND.'
| Plateau | Location | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Deccan Plateau | SOUTHERN India | Ancient, rocky. Surrounded by Western and Eastern Ghats. |
| Tibetan Plateau | Central Asia | HIGHEST plateau in the world (4,500 m). Called the 'ROOF of the World.' |
| Colorado Plateau | USA | Grand Canyon. |
Plains
PLAINS are FLAT, LOW-LYING land. They are the MOST FERTILE and MOST POPULATED landforms.
| Plain | Location | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Ganga-Brahmaputra Plain | NORTHERN India | Very FERTILE. Densely POPULATED. |
| Indo-Gangetic Plain | India-Pakistan | Rich ALLUVIAL soil from rivers. |
| Great Plains | USA | MAJOR farming region. |
Deserts
A DESERT is a region that gets VERY LITTLE rainfall (less than 250 mm per year).
| Desert | Location | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Sahara | Africa | HOT desert (LARGEST — 9 million km²) |
| Thar | India (Rajasthan) | HOT desert |
| Gobi | China and Mongolia | COLD desert |
| Antarctic | Antarctica | COLD desert (LARGEST cold desert) |
5. Major Water Bodies
Seas
A SEA is a SMALLER body of salt water, usually PARTLY enclosed by land.
| Sea | Location | Connected To |
|---|---|---|
| Arabian Sea | West of India | Indian Ocean |
| Bay of Bengal | East of India | Indian Ocean |
| Mediterranean Sea | Between Europe and Africa | Atlantic Ocean |
Rivers
A RIVER is a LARGE, natural flow of FRESH water that empties into a sea or ocean.
| River | Length | Flows Through | Ends In |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nile | 6,650 km (LONGEST) | Africa (11 countries) | Mediterranean Sea |
| Amazon | 6,400 km | South America (Brazil, Peru) | Atlantic Ocean |
| Ganga | 2,525 km | India (Himalayas to Bay of Bengal) | Bay of Bengal |
Key Facts to Remember
- Earth is the ONLY known planet with LIFE.
- There are SEVEN continents and FIVE oceans.
- 'Asia is the LARGEST continent. Australia is the SMALLEST. The Pacific is the LARGEST ocean. The Arctic is the SMALLEST.'
- Mountains are HIGH, plateaus are FLAT and HIGH, plains are FLAT and LOW.
- Deserts are DEFINED by RAINFALL (less than 250 mm/year), NOT by temperature.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Correct Understanding |
|---|---|
| Thinking Europe is a separate continent from Asia | Europe and Asia together are called EURASIA — they are ONE landmass |
| Believing there are 7 oceans | There are 5 oceans — the Southern Ocean was officially recognised in 2000 |
| Calling Antarctica a 'frozen wasteland' | Antarctica is IMPORTANT for scientific research and climate regulation |
| Confirming seas and oceans as the same | Oceans are LARGER; seas are SMALLER and partly enclosed by land |
