Our Environment

1. What Is the Environment?

The ENVIRONMENT is EVERYTHING that surrounds us — both NATURAL and HUMAN-MADE.

'Your environment is NOT just the trees and rivers. It is also your SCHOOL, your HOME, your NEIGHBOURHOOD, and even the ROADS you walk on. Everything you SEE, TOUCH, and EXPERIENCE is part of your environment.'

Two Types of Environment

TypeDefinitionExamples
Natural environmentCreated by NATURE — not by humansMountains, rivers, forests, oceans, air, soil, sunlight
Human-made environmentCreated by HUMANSBuildings, roads, bridges, parks, farms, factories, cities

Components of the Natural Environment

ComponentWhat It Includes
LithosphereThe SOLID outer layer of Earth — rocks, soil, and land
HydrosphereALL the WATER on Earth — oceans, rivers, lakes, ice
AtmosphereThe LAYER of air surrounding the Earth
BiosphereThe ZONE where LIFE exists — includes parts of ALL three above

2. Natural Resources

NATURAL RESOURCES are things from nature that humans use.

Renewable Resources

These can be REPLENISHED naturally.

ResourceHow It Is UsedMust We Conserve?
SunlightSolar energy for electricity and heatingYES — capture it efficiently
WindWind turbines generate electricityYES — use where available
WaterDrinking, farming, washingYES — it is LIMITED
ForestsWood, paper, oxygenYES — replant what we cut
SoilGrowing foodYES — prevent erosion

Non-Renewable Resources

These are LIMITED and will RUN OUT.

ResourceUsed ForWhat Happens When It Runs Out?
CoalElectricity generationWe MUST find alternatives
PetroleumPetrol, diesel, plasticWe MUST reduce dependence
Natural gasHeating, electricityWe MUST shift to renewables
MineralsMetals, jewellery, electronicsWe MUST recycle

3. Pollution — The Biggest Problem

POLLUTION is the contamination of the environment with HARMFUL substances.

'Pollution is like DIRTYING our own HOUSE. When we throw garbage on the street, pour chemicals into rivers, or let smoke into the air — we are POLLUTING the place where WE live. And the CONSEQUENCES come back to US.'

Types of Pollution

TypeCausesEffectsHow to Reduce
Air pollutionVehicle smoke, factory emissions, burning wasteBreathing problems, asthma, global warmingUse public transport. Plant trees.
Water pollutionSewage, industrial waste, plastic in riversWaterborne diseases (cholera), death of aquatic lifeTreat waste before dumping. Do NOT throw garbage in water.
Land/Soil pollutionPlastic waste, chemicals, miningInfertile soil, contaminated foodREDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. Compost organic waste.
Noise pollutionHonking, loudspeakers, constructionHearing loss, STRESS, disturbed sleepLimit honking. Use earplugs. Plant trees (they absorb sound).

Global Warming and Climate Change

TermMeaning
Greenhouse effectGases (CO₂, methane) trap HEAT in the atmosphere — like a BLANKET around the Earth
Global warmingThe AVERAGE temperature of Earth IS RISING because of too many greenhouse gases
Climate changeCHANGES in weather patterns — more storms, floods, and droughts

4. Conservation — Saving Our Planet

CONSERVATION means using resources WISELY so they LAST for future generations.

The 3 R's

RWhat It MeansHow You Can Help
REDUCEUse LESSTurn off lights. Take short showers. Use less paper.
REUSEUse AGAINCarry a cloth bag. Refill water bottles. Donate old clothes.
RECYCLEMake NEW from oldSeparate paper, plastic, and glass. Send them for recycling.

Other Ways to Help

ActionImpact
Plant treesABSORBS CO₂. Gives oxygen. Prevents soil erosion.
Save waterTurn off taps. Fix leaks. Collect RAINWATER.
Save electricityTurn off unused lights and fans. Use LED bulbs.
Use less plasticCarry your OWN bag, bottle, and lunch box.
Walk or cycleREDUCES vehicle pollution. Good for HEALTH too.
Spread awarenessTell your FAMILY and FRIENDS about conservation.

5. Ecosystem and Balance

An ECOSYSTEM is a community of LIVING things interacting with each other and their NON-LIVING environment.

Importance of Balance

'The environment is like a PERFECTLY balanced scale. If you add too much POLLUTION to one side, the whole system TILTS. A healthy environment requires BALANCE — and WE are the ones who can protect that balance.'

ActionEffect on Balance
Cutting too many treesLess oxygen. More CO₂. Soil EROSION.
Killing all wolvesDeer population EXPLODES. Plants get overeaten.
Dumping chemicals in riversFish DIE. Water becomes UNDRINKABLE.
Planting treesRESTORES balance. Brings back animals.

Key Facts to Remember

  • The environment includes BOTH natural and human-made things.
  • 'POLLUTION is the introduction of HARMFUL substances into the environment.'
  • There are FOUR main types of pollution: air, water, land, and noise.
  • The 3 R's are: REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE.
  • CONSERVATION is about using resources WISELY for the FUTURE.
  • Every SMALL action — turning off a light, planting a tree — MATTERS.

Common Mistakes

MistakeCorrect Understanding
Thinking only factories cause pollutionEVERYONE contributes to pollution — including our daily choices
Believing the 3 R's are only about recyclingREDUCE (use less) is MORE effective than recycling
Confusing weather and climate changeWeather is SHORT-TERM; CLIMATE CHANGE is a LONG-TERM trend
Thinking one person cannot make a differenceMILLIONS of people making SMALL changes create BIG impact

Self-Test: 5 Questions

Q1. What is the difference between the natural environment and the human-made environment?

Q2. Name four types of pollution. List one cause and one effect of each.

Q3. What are the 3 R's? Give an example of each.

Q4. Why is it important to conserve natural resources?

Q5. How can you personally help protect the environment? List three actions.

Answers

A1. The NATURAL environment is created by nature (mountains, rivers, forests). The HUMAN-MADE environment is created by humans (buildings, roads, bridges, parks).

A2. (1) AIR pollution — vehicle smoke → breathing problems. (2) WATER pollution — sewage in rivers → waterborne diseases. (3) LAND pollution — plastic waste → infertile soil. (4) NOISE pollution — honking → hearing loss.

A3. REDUCE — use less (turn off lights when not needed). REUSE — use again (carry a cloth bag). RECYCLE — make new from old (separate paper for recycling).

A4. (1) Many resources are LIMITED (non-renewable) and will RUN OUT. (2) The GROWING population needs more resources. (3) FUTURE generations deserve a healthy planet too.

A5. (1) Turn off lights and fans when not in use. (2) Carry my own cloth bag instead of taking plastic bags. (3) Plant a tree. (4) Not waste water or food. (5) Tell my friends and family about conservation.
