1. Photosynthesis — Making Food

PHOTOSYNTHESIS is the process by which GREEN PLANTS make their own food (glucose) using CARBON DIOXIDE and WATER in the presence of SUNLIGHT and CHLOROPHYLL.

Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen (in presence of sunlight and chlorophyll)

Site of Photosynthesis

  • Organelle: CHLOROPLAST (contains the green pigment CHLOROPHYLL).
  • Location: Mainly in LEAVES (also in green stems).

Experiment to Show Chlorophyll is Necessary

A variegated leaf (green + white) is tested for starch with iodine.

Common Mistakes

  1. Writing the equation for photosynthesis BACKWARDS (CO₂ + H₂O → glucose + O₂, NOT the reverse).
