1. Introduction

Food production is the SCIENCE and ART of growing plants and raising animals for food.

'With a population of over 1.4 BILLION, India needs to produce enough food for EVERYONE. This requires EFFICIENT farming practices and MODERN technology.'


2. Crop Types

A crop is a plant grown on a LARGE scale for food or other uses.

3. Agricultural Practices

Step 1: Soil Preparation

  • PLOUGHING (tilling): Loosens soil, aerates it, helps root growth
  • LEVELLING: Makes the field even
  • MANURING: Adds organic matter (compost, manure)

Step 2: Sowing

  • Selection of GOOD quality seeds
  • Traditional method: BROADCASTING (scattering by hand)
  • Modern method: SEED DRILL (places seeds at proper DEPTH and DISTANCE)
