Staying Healthy and Happy — Class 3 EVS (CBSE)

From the current NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 3 book, Unit 3: Gifts of Nature, Chapter 9. Good health is a treasure — for both our body and our mind.

1. Why this chapter matters

Being healthy is not only about the body; a happy mind matters too. Learning good habits of cleanliness, food, exercise, and rest, and spending time with family and friends, helps children stay fit and cheerful.

2. Key ideas

  • Cleanliness (hygiene): brush teeth twice a day, bathe daily, wash hands before eating and after using the toilet, cut nails, and wear clean clothes.
  • Healthy food: eat fresh, balanced meals and drink clean water.
  • Exercise and play: run, play games, and stay active to keep the body fit.
  • Rest and sleep: get enough sleep so the body can rest and grow.
  • A happy mind: spend time with family and friends, share, help others, and do things you enjoy.
  • Good health means a healthy body and a happy mind together.

3. Let's understand

To keep our body healthy, we follow simple habits every day. We brush our teeth, bathe, wash our hands before eating and after the toilet, cut our nails, and wear clean clothes. We eat fresh, healthy food and drink clean water.

Our body also needs exercise — running, playing, and moving keep us strong. And it needs rest; enough sleep helps us grow and feel fresh.

But health is not only about the body. A happy mind is just as important. Spending time with family and friends, sharing, helping others, and doing things we enjoy make us feel good inside. When the body is healthy and the mind is happy, we are truly well.

4. New words

WordMeaning
hygienekeeping ourselves clean to stay healthy

5. Activity corner

Make a "My Healthy Day" chart. Write one thing you will do for each:

  • Cleanliness (a hygiene habit)
  • Food (a healthy choice)
  • Exercise (a game or activity)
  • Happiness (time with family or a friend)

6. Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Thinking health means only not being sick. Fix: Health means a healthy body and a happy mind.
  • Mistake: Skipping handwashing or brushing. Fix: Wash hands before eating and brush teeth twice a day.
  • Mistake: Thinking only food keeps us healthy. Fix: We also need cleanliness, exercise, rest, and happiness.

7. Let Us Think

  1. Write three habits that keep our body clean. Brushing teeth, bathing daily, and washing hands (also cutting nails, wearing clean clothes).

  2. Why do we need exercise and sleep? Exercise keeps the body fit; sleep lets the body rest and grow.

  3. When should we wash our hands? Before eating and after using the toilet.

  4. What keeps our mind happy? Spending time with family and friends, sharing, helping, and doing things we enjoy.
