ICAI does not mark the final answer alone. Its Suggested Answers distribute marks across the steps of a solution — the treatment, the computation and the presentation — so a candidate with visible correct reasoning and a wrong closing figure routinely scores more than one with a right figure and no working. Most Foundation Accounting failures are presentation failures rather than knowledge failures, and presentation is the fastest-improving part of the paper. Fifteen to twenty marks typically sit in working notes, narrations and formats alone.

How to Crack CA Foundation Accounting

Weightage: Paper 1, 100 marks, three hours, entirely subjective. There is no negative marking and no multiple choice. Every mark on this paper is awarded by a human examiner reading what you wrote, against a published marking scheme that allots marks step by step.

Most students who fail Foundation Accounting do not fail because they did not know the chapters. They fail because of the gap between knowing a method and presenting it in the form that earns marks. This chapter is about closing that gap.

It is worth being precise about what makes this paper different from every other paper you have sat. In a school accountancy exam, the answer is the thing being marked. Here, the answer is only part of it. ICAI publishes Suggested Answers after each sitting, and those documents show marks distributed across the steps of a solution — so many for the correct treatment, so many for the working, so many for the presentation. A candidate who reaches the right closing balance by unexplained arithmetic and a candidate who reaches a wrong closing balance through visible, correct reasoning do not score the same. Often the second scores more.

That single fact should reorganise how you prepare.

The marking model, stated plainly

Think of every accounting answer as three separable things:

  1. The treatment. Did you recognise what kind of transaction this is and what the rule requires? This is the conceptual mark.
  2. The computation. Did the arithmetic that follows from that treatment actually get done, and is it visible?
  3. The presentation. Is it in the form the question asked for — a journal entry with a narration, a ledger account with the right sides, a balance sheet under the right headings?

Each is marked. They are not substitutes for one another. This is why the two most common ways of losing marks are so different in character:

  • The student who understands the chapter but writes only final figures loses the computation and presentation marks. They knew everything and scored half.
  • The student who reproduces a memorised format but misidentifies the transaction loses the treatment marks in every line the error touches. They wrote three pages and scored little.

The remedy for the first is mechanical and is worth more marks per hour of effort than any amount of additional theory. That remedy is working notes.

Working notes are not optional and not decoration

A working note is a numbered computation, written below or beside the main solution, showing how a figure in that solution was arrived at.

Consider a question that asks you to prepare a partner's capital account after admitting a new partner. Somewhere in your answer there is a figure for the goodwill adjustment. Written bare, it is a number that the examiner must either accept or reject entirely. Written as a working note — the new profit-sharing ratio, the sacrificing ratio derived from it, the goodwill apportioned in that ratio — it becomes four or five separately markable steps. If you compute the sacrificing ratio correctly but then apportion carelessly, you keep the marks for the ratio.

The rules that make working notes actually work:

  • Number them. "W.N. 1", "W.N. 2". An unnumbered block of arithmetic below a solution is not attached to anything.
  • Reference them from the solution. Where the figure appears, write "(W.N. 2)" beside it. This is what tells the examiner which computation to read for that line, and it is the difference between a working note being credited and being ignored.
  • Show the intermediate step, not just the formula. Writing the depreciation formula proves nothing. Writing the cost, the residual value, the life and then the annual charge shows four decisions.
  • Write them as you go, not at the end. Working notes assembled afterwards from memory are where transcription errors enter, and a question abandoned for time will have no notes at all if you deferred them.

There is a second, less obvious benefit. Working notes make your own errors findable. When a balance sheet does not tally, a candidate with notes can locate the discrepancy in a minute by re-reading the derivations. A candidate without them has to redo the entire question.

Format is marked, so formats must be automatic

ICAI expects specific presentation, and the expectations are consistent enough to be drilled.

Journal entries need the debit line first, the credit line indented beneath with "To" preceding the account name, the "Dr." notation, both amount columns filled, and — this is the one most often dropped — a narration in brackets beneath. The narration is not filler. It states what the entry records, and where the entry itself is ambiguous, the narration is what demonstrates you understood the transaction.

Ledger accounts are written in T-form with "Dr." on the left and "Cr." on the right, with Date, Particulars, J.F. and Amount columns, and the contra account named in Particulars preceded by "To" on the debit side and "By" on the credit side. Balancing figures are labelled "By Balance c/d" and carried down as "To Balance b/d" on the correct side.

Final accounts need their headings exactly: a Trading and Profit and Loss Account "for the year ended" a date, and a Balance Sheet "as at" a date. That distinction — a flow measured over a period against a position at a moment — is conceptual, not cosmetic, and getting it backwards signals that the difference is not understood.

Company balance sheets follow the Schedule III format, which is a vertical statement under prescribed headings with figures grouped as Equity and Liabilities and then Assets, each broken into current and non-current. Learn the skeleton of Schedule III as a structure you can reproduce blank, and then the only work in the exam hall is placing items into it.

The efficient way to learn formats is to write them from memory on a blank sheet, then compare against the study material and note only what you missed. Repeat until nothing is missed. This is genuinely faster than re-reading, and it is the exact skill the exam tests.

Build the subject in syllabus order, because it is dependency order

The Foundation Accounting syllabus is not an arbitrary list. It is ordered by dependency, and studying out of order is why some students find the later chapters unreasonably hard.

The theoretical framework defines the vocabulary. Accrual, going concern, prudence, materiality, the distinction between capital and revenue — every later chapter uses these words as though they were settled. A student who is vague about the capital-versus-revenue distinction will misclassify items in final accounts forever, because that single distinction determines whether an amount hits the profit and loss account or the balance sheet.

The accounting process is the machinery. Journal, ledger, trial balance, subsidiary books, cash book, and rectification of errors. Every specialised chapter that follows is this machinery applied to a particular situation. Rectification of errors deserves particular attention because it is the chapter that proves whether you actually understand double entry or have only memorised entries: to rectify an error you must reconstruct what was recorded, determine what should have been recorded, and write the entry that moves from one to the other. That is a genuine test, and it is examined regularly.

The specialised chapters then come in increasing order of difficulty. Bank reconciliation, inventories, depreciation and bills of exchange are single-topic chapters with contained methods. Final accounts of sole proprietors is the first synthesis, where everything so far must work together. Not-for-profit organisations and accounts from incomplete records are variations on that synthesis. Partnership accounts and company accounts are the heaviest, and they sit last because they assume everything before them.

The practical consequence: do not start with partnership because it carries the most marks. It carries the most marks and it will not go in until final accounts is secure.

Where the marks actually are

Every paper differs, but the shape is stable. Partnership accounts and company accounts together are consistently the largest block. Final accounts, in its sole-proprietor and not-for-profit forms, is next. The single-topic chapters contribute steadily and are the most reliable marks in the paper because their questions are self-contained — a bank reconciliation question cannot be made hard by dragging in other chapters, only by adding more items.

Theory carries real marks too, and it is the most under-prepared part of the paper. Short questions on accounting concepts, on the difference between two treatments, on the meaning of a convention — these appear every sitting and are answered in a few lines. Students who prepare only numerical problems leave these blank or waffle through them. They are the cheapest marks on the paper and require nothing more than being able to state a definition and give an example.

The three-hour plan

You get 15 minutes of reading time before writing begins. Use it deliberately:

  • Read every question, not just the first few.
  • Mark each one as confident, workable, or doubtful.
  • Decide the order you will attempt them in, and write that order down.

Then attempt in descending order of confidence. This is not merely comforting. It is arithmetic: marks earned early are certain, and a question attempted while fresh is attempted more accurately. The reverse order — starting with the hardest to "get it out of the way" — reliably produces a candidate who has spent ninety minutes on twenty marks.

Budget by marks. In 180 minutes for 100 marks, allowing 15 for checking, you have roughly a minute and a half per mark. A 20-mark question deserves about half an hour and not more. The discipline that matters most is the willingness to stop: when a question has consumed its budget and is not resolving, leave space, move on, and return if time allows. Two questions at 70% are worth more than one at 100% and one untouched.

Attempt everything you can. There is no negative marking on this paper. A partially completed answer with visible working earns marks; a blank earns none. Even where you cannot finish, writing the correct opening entries and the working notes you have derived is worth real marks.

When the balance sheet does not tally

It happens, and it is not a catastrophe. What you do next decides how much it costs.

Do not restart the question. Do not force it by inserting a plug figure without saying so. Instead:

  1. Check the arithmetic of the totals themselves first — a column added wrongly is the most common cause and the fastest to find.
  2. Compute the difference and look for it directly. A difference equal to a figure in the question means an item was omitted. A difference equal to twice a figure means an item is on the wrong side. A difference divisible by nine often means transposed digits.
  3. Check that each adjustment was given its full double effect. Half-posted adjustments — the expense recorded but the corresponding liability not — are the second most common cause and are exactly what closing entries are for.
  4. If it still does not tally, complete the statement, show the difference honestly, and move on. Present your working notes clearly. The treatment and computation marks are still there to be earned, and an examiner reading correct working will award them.

What you must not do is spend forty minutes hunting a difference of a few hundred rupees while three questions sit unattempted.

Practice as the exam is written

Practising by reading solved examples produces a confident feeling and very little skill. The transferable version is:

  • Work from ICAI's own material first — the Study Material, the Mock Test Papers and the Revision Test Papers. These are written by the people who set the paper and are the closest available guide to what is expected.
  • Attempt full papers under timed conditions, on paper, with no reference material. Presentation and time discipline are only trainable under those conditions.
  • Mark your own script against the Suggested Answers, and mark it strictly on presentation as well as on answers. Count how many marks a rigorous examiner would deduct for missing narrations, unlabelled workings or wrong headings. That number is usually a shock the first time, and it usually falls to near zero within three or four attempts.
  • Keep an error log. Write down every mistake and its cause — misread the question, forgot the adjustment, wrong format, arithmetic slip. Patterns appear quickly, and most students find that a handful of recurring causes account for the majority of lost marks.

The habits that separate a pass from a comfortable pass

  • Show every computation as a numbered working note, and reference it from the solution.
  • Write narrations under journal entries, always.
  • Use "for the year ended" for the Trading and Profit and Loss Account and "as at" for the Balance Sheet.
  • Never erase a wrong answer into illegibility; strike it through with a single line so the examiner can still read what remains.
  • Round consistently and state the unit at the top of the statement rather than repeating it in every line.
  • Leave a blank line between questions and start every question on a fresh page. An answer the examiner cannot navigate is an answer that loses marks it earned.
  • Answer theory questions in complete sentences with a definition and an example. Bullet fragments read as half-remembered.

None of this is about knowing more accounting. It is about ensuring that the accounting you already know arrives on the page in a form that can be marked. At Foundation level, that alone is usually worth fifteen to twenty marks — the difference between a scraped pass and a comfortable one, and often the difference between a pass and a repeat.

ICAI allots marks step by step, so the sacrificing ratio, the goodwill computation and the account format are each separately markable. A bare correct figure earns only the marks attached to that figure. This is not a quirk of generous marking; it reflects that the paper is testing method, and method has to be visible to be tested.

They cost perhaps ten per cent more writing time and protect a much larger share of the marks, so the trade is strongly favourable.
