Para Jumbles — CAT VARC

A para jumble presents 4-6 sentences in a scrambled order and asks for the sequence that forms a coherent paragraph — occasionally as a TITA question requiring the exact order typed in, occasionally as an MCQ offering four candidate orderings.

The method that works is fixing the two ends of the paragraph first, then linking the middle using pronoun references and connecting words — never attempting to read the sentences in their given, scrambled order and guessing from a general impression.

1. Find the opening sentence

The opening sentence introduces a subject, name, or context without referring back to anything — it never starts with a pronoun ("It," "This," "They") whose antecedent is undefined, and it never starts with a contrasting connector ("However," "Therefore," "In addition") that presupposes a prior statement. A sentence that names a general topic, introduces a specific person or thing for the first time, or states a general claim the rest of the paragraph will elaborate on is the usual candidate.

When two sentences both seem plausible as openers, check which one the other sentences' pronouns and connectors point back to — only one of the two candidates will actually be referenced by later sentences as their antecedent.

2. Find the closing sentence

The closing sentence typically draws a conclusion, states an implication, or resolves a tension set up earlier — it is rarely a sentence that itself introduces a wholly new idea with no connection to what came before. Working backward from likely endings is as useful as working forward from the likely opening, and doing both narrows the middle sentences' possible order substantially before any of them need to be placed.

3. Track pronouns and reference chains

Every pronoun ("it," "this," "they," "such") must refer to something named in an earlier sentence, and finding that earlier sentence pins down a direct ordering constraint. A sentence beginning "This approach, however, has one major drawback" cannot come before the sentence that first introduces "this approach" by name — the pronoun forces a strict ordering between the two.

Definite articles work the same way as pronouns for this purpose: "the study" or "the committee" appearing without prior introduction signals that an earlier sentence, not yet placed, must have introduced that specific study or committee first.

4. Track connecting words

Contrast connectors ("however," "yet," "but," "on the other hand"), addition connectors ("moreover," "furthermore," "in addition") and causal connectors ("therefore," "as a result," "consequently") all signal a specific relationship to the immediately preceding sentence, not to the paragraph in general. A sentence starting with "As a result" must follow a sentence stating a cause, and a sentence starting with "However" must follow a sentence stating the position being contrasted.

Trap. A chronological or sequential connector ("first," "then," "finally," "subsequently") is one of the strongest ordering signals available and is frequently under-used — if two sentences carry "first" and "then" respectively, their relative order is fixed regardless of any other consideration.

The fastest solving method is finding the single most certain pairing (usually a very specific pronoun-antecedent link, or a "first...then" pair) and building outward from it, rather than trying to place all sentences in one pass from scratch. Once two or three sentences are confidently linked as a block, the remaining sentences usually have only one or two positions left where they could plausibly fit around that block.

6. The MCQ shortcut — mandatory pairs

When para jumbles are offered as an MCQ with four candidate orderings rather than a typed answer, finding just one mandatory adjacent pair (via a pronoun or connector link) is often enough to eliminate two or three of the four options immediately, without ever solving the full order.

If sentences D and A must be adjacent because A's "this" refers to something D introduces, any option that does not place D immediately before A can be eliminated on sight — frequently leaving only one option standing before the rest of the paragraph is even considered.

Worked Example

Sentences (scrambled):

A. However, this simplicity comes at a cost: the algorithm's accuracy degrades sharply on datasets with more than a handful of overlapping categories.

B. A decision tree classifies data by asking a sequence of yes/no questions, each one splitting the remaining data into two smaller groups.

C. Researchers have therefore developed ensemble methods, which combine many individual decision trees to offset this weakness.

D. Its main appeal is interpretability — unlike many other classification methods, a human can trace exactly which questions led to a given prediction.

Solving it:

Sentence B introduces the subject ("a decision tree") for the first time with no pronoun referring backward — this is the opening sentence. Sentence D refers to "its main appeal," where "its" must point back to the decision tree introduced in B — D follows B directly.

Sentence A opens with "However, this simplicity" — "this simplicity" refers to the interpretability/simplicity described in D, and "However" signals a contrast with D's positive framing — A follows D. Sentence C opens with "Researchers have therefore developed," where "therefore" responds directly to the weakness A just described — C follows A, and resolves the paragraph.

Correct order: B, D, A, C.

Second example — sentences:

P. First, the raw survey responses were cleaned to remove incomplete entries.

Q. The resulting dataset, though smaller, was far more reliable for the analysis that followed.

R. A team of analysts then coded each open-ended response into one of twelve predefined categories.

S. This entire process, spanning both cleaning and coding, took nearly three weeks to complete.

Solving it: "First" in P signals the start of a sequence, and P mentions no prior context — P opens. "Then" in R signals it follows the step described in P (cleaning), so R follows P. Q's "the resulting dataset" refers to the outcome of the coding process in R, so Q follows R. S's "this entire process, spanning both cleaning and coding" summarises P and R together, making S the natural closing sentence. Correct order: P, R, Q, S.
