Inference and Assumptions — CLAT English

After main-idea questions, inference is the most common CLAT English task, and the trickiest: it asks what the passage implies but does not state. The danger is that "reading between the lines" tempts you to bring in your own ideas. The discipline is to stay strictly inside the passage — an inference must be something the passage makes necessary or highly likely, not merely something that could be true in the world.


1. What counts as an inference here

An inference is a conclusion the passage supports strongly even though it does not say it outright.

  • Passage: "She checked her watch for the third time and glanced at the door." Safe inference: she is waiting for someone / growing impatient.
  • The passage did not say "she was impatient" — but the details make it the natural, supported reading.

The test: could this be false while everything in the passage is true? If it is forced or strongly pointed to, it is a valid inference. If the passage is equally consistent with its being false, it is not.


2. The line between inference and over-reading

The classic error is the unsupported leap — an option that goes further than the passage warrants.

  • Passage: "The company cut its marketing budget this year."
  • Safe: the company spent less on marketing than before.
  • Over-reach: the company is in financial trouble. (Maybe — but the passage does not support it; budgets are cut for many reasons.)

Rule: a valid inference is a small, well-supported step beyond the text — not a story you build on top of it. When an option requires extra assumptions the passage never gave, it is over-reading.


3. Degree words decide many inference questions

Because an inference must be safe, the wording of options matters as much as their content.

Default suspicion: an option loaded with absolute words is probably an over-reach unless the passage was equally absolute.


4. Assumptions — what the author takes for granted

An assumption question asks what the author must believe for a statement to make sense — an idea left unstated but relied upon.

  • Passage: "We should teach coding in every primary school so that our children can thrive in tomorrow's economy."
  • Assumption: coding skills will be valuable in the future economy (and that primary school is a suitable place to build them). Remove that belief and the recommendation loses its basis.

The negation test works here as in logic: negate the candidate assumption; if the author's claim collapses, it was assumed.


5. Inference vs assumption — the direction

  • An inference points forward: it follows from what the author said.
  • An assumption points backward: it is what the author needed before saying it.

One-line check: ask "does this follow from the passage?" (inference) versus "does the passage depend on this?" (assumption). The stem tells you which — read it carefully.


6. Traps specific to English inference

  • Emotionally plausible but unstated — an option that fits the mood but is not supported by the words.
  • Real-world true — a fact true in life that the passage does not establish.
  • Reverses a nuance — the passage said "rarely"; the option says "never".
  • Answers a different question — a true inference that does not match the specific stem.
