Why this chapter matters in CLAT
Logical Reasoning is a fifth of the CLAT paper, and since the pattern changed it is entirely comprehension-based critical reasoning — no puzzles, no blood relations. Every question in the section reduces to the same handful of moves: find the conclusion, name the assumption, strengthen or weaken, spot the flaw, or draw what follows. This chapter installs the reading method and vocabulary the rest of the section builds on, so a student learns to dissect an argument's structure instead of arguing with it.

How CLAT Logical Reasoning Works — CLAT Logical Reasoning

Since the exam pattern changed, CLAT Logical Reasoning is comprehension-based critical reasoning. You read a short passage — usually a piece of argument or opinion — and answer 4–6 questions that test whether you can dissect the reasoning: its conclusion, its assumptions, what would strengthen or weaken it, and what follows from it. There is very little of the old "seating arrangement / syllogism / coding" material. This chapter gives you the map and the method; the later chapters drill each skill.


1. What the section actually contains

Each Logical Reasoning set is built on a passage of roughly 300–450 words followed by questions. The passage is an argument or a discussion of an issue. The questions ask you to:

  • identify the main conclusion or the point the author is making,
  • find an assumption the argument depends on,
  • choose what most strengthens or weakens the argument,
  • identify the flaw in the reasoning,
  • draw an inference that must follow, or
  • recognise an analogy or parallel in the structure.

Key mindset: you are not asked whether the author is right. You are asked about the structure of the reasoning — what it assumes, what supports it, what breaks it. Keep your own opinions out.


2. The anatomy of an argument

Every argument has two kinds of statements:

  • Premises are the reasons offered — facts, data, or accepted claims.
  • The conclusion is what those reasons are meant to establish.
  • Often an assumption sits unstated between them — a missing link the argument needs to be true.

Finding the conclusion: ask "what is the author trying to convince me of?" The other statements are there to support it. Words like therefore, thus, hence, so, clearly often flag the conclusion; words like because, since, for, given that flag premises.

4. A repeatable reading method

  1. Read for the conclusion first. Before anything else, pin down the author's main claim in your own words. Everything else orbits it.
  2. Separate premises from conclusion. Mark what is offered as support versus what is being supported.
  3. Name the gap. Ask, "what must be true for these premises to give this conclusion?" That gap is usually the assumption — and the target of strengthen/weaken questions.
  4. Read the question stem before the options. Know whether you are strengthening, weakening, inferring, or finding a flaw — the same passage supports different answers for different stems.
  5. Prephrase, then match. Predict the answer in your head, then find the option closest to it. This resists tempting-but-wrong distractors.

Time discipline: with 4–6 questions per passage, read the passage once, carefully, then work all its questions before moving on. Re-reading from scratch for each question wastes the clock.


5. The traps CLAT builds in

  • Out-of-scope options — true or reasonable statements that the passage never addresses. Attractive, but not the answer.
  • Reversers — a weaken option among strengthen choices (or vice versa). Read the stem carefully.
  • Too strong / too absolute — inference options using "always", "never", "only" when the passage supports only a modest claim.
  • Premise restated — an option that repeats a premise and dresses it as the conclusion.
  • Opinion smuggling — an option that is what you believe, not what the passage established.

6. Exam protocol

  1. Find and paraphrase the conclusion before reading the options.
  2. Split the passage into premises and conclusion; locate the assumption gap.
  3. Read each question stem exactly — strengthen, weaken, assume, infer, or flaw.
  4. Prephrase the answer, then match to the closest option.
  5. Reject out-of-scope, too-strong, and reverser options first to narrow the field.
  6. Judge the structure, never whether you personally agree with the author.

Since the pattern change, Logical Reasoning is passage-based critical reasoning — short arguments followed by questions on their conclusion, assumptions, and what strengthens, weakens or follows. The old puzzle-heavy material is largely gone, so your practice should be critical-reasoning sets, not puzzle books.

Ask what the author is ultimately trying to convince you of; the other statements exist to support it. Signal words help — 'therefore', 'thus', 'hence' usually precede the conclusion, while 'because', 'since', 'for' precede premises. Paraphrase the conclusion in your own words before reading the options.

An assumption is something the argument needs to be true but does not state — it sits between the premises and the conclusion. An inference is something that must be true if the passage is true — it follows from the argument. Assumptions are what the argument leans on; inferences are what it yields.

Read the passage once for its conclusion and structure, then work all its questions together. Because there are several questions per passage, reading each question first and re-reading the passage each time wastes time. Understand the argument once, thoroughly, then apply it.

Check that the option actually engages the argument in the passage. Many distractors are true or reasonable statements that the passage never addresses — they are out of scope. The correct answer must connect to the specific reasoning you were given.
