How CLAT Quant Works — CLAT Quantitative Techniques
Quantitative Techniques is the smallest section of CLAT — 10–14 questions, about 10% of the paper — and the most misjudged. Under the revised pattern every question sits beneath a short passage, table, chart or caselet, and asks Class-10-level arithmetic: percentages, ratios, averages, interest, and basic data interpretation. There is no advanced maths. The real enemy is time and careless reading, not difficulty. This chapter shows how the section is built and how to bank its marks.
1. What the section actually is
Every question is data-driven: you are given numbers in a caselet and asked a simple calculation about them.
- The maths is easy — percentage, ratio, average, profit-loss, simple/compound interest, and reading a chart.
- The traps are non-mathematical: misreading which row the question wants, missing a unit, or rushing a two-step sum.
Do not fear this section. A student who avoids it out of "maths anxiety" throws away the easiest, highest-accuracy marks in the paper.
2. The three toolkits you need

3. The caselet method
- Read the data first, slowly — note what each number is (units, totals, categories) before reading the question.
- Read the question precisely — which quantity, which row, which time period.
- Pick the one operation it needs — usually a single percentage, ratio, or average step.
- Compute cleanly and check the units of your answer.
- Re-read the question once to confirm you answered what was asked, not a near-miss.
Most errors are reading errors, not maths errors. The data caselet rewards the careful, not the fast-and-loose.
4. The three high-frequency operations

5. Time and negative-marking strategy
- The section is small, so do not over-invest — grab the direct one-step questions first.
- With 0.25 negative marking, skip a caselet you cannot read cleanly rather than guess a multi-step answer.
- Do not skip the section wholesale — even 8–10 confident attempts here is a strong, high-accuracy return.
6. Exam protocol
- Treat quant as easy marks with a reading tax — the maths is Class-10.
- Read the data before the question; note units and totals.
- Reduce each question to one clean operation.
- Bank the one-step percentage/ratio/average questions first.
- Apply negative-marking discipline on multi-step or ambiguous caselets.
- Never abandon the section — it is the paper's cheapest accuracy.
