CMA Final at a glance

Conducted byThe Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), a statutory body under the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959
CycleTwice a year — June and December terms
ModePen-and-paper at ICMAI examination centres. Every paper runs three hours for 100 marks, with Section A (MCQs) and Section B (descriptive) both attempted within the same sitting
EligibilityBoth groups of CMA Intermediate must be cleared to register for Final. A mandatory 15-month practical training runs alongside study (it can begin as early as Intermediate registration) and must be substantially complete before a Final-group result is declared — check the current circular for the exact checkpoint timing, since the internal sub-splits of the 15 months are periodically clarified even though the total duration is stable.

Qualifies you forA qualified CMA's compensation depends heavily on the specific route taken — cost-audit and consulting practice, industry finance roles, or government service. Senior industry roles (CFO, Financial Controller, Cost Controller, even Managing Director in some cases) and cost-audit practice command materially more than entry-level compensation, and a distinct government-service route exists via the Indian Cost Accounts Service (ICoAS), an all-India Class-I service ranked alongside the IAS and IFS

⚡ What changed recently

  • Syllabus 2022's Final level fixed the current Papers 13-20 structure across two groups, with a uniform 30% MCQ / 70% descriptive split confirmed across every paper, mirroring Intermediate's own structure.
  • ICMAI has announced a transition to CMA Syllabus 2026, with first application expected from around the June 2027 term per secondary reporting — the nearer December 2026 and May-June 2027 sittings remain governed by Syllabus 2022, which is what this hub is built against.
  • The Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023 added a parallel Rs. 2,000 crore deal-value threshold to the Competition Act's traditional asset/turnover-based combination-notification test, effective from 10 September 2024 — a live 2024 change now built into this hub's Corporate and Economic Laws content.
  • The Consumer Protection (Jurisdiction) Rules, 2021 revised the three-tier consumer commission's pecuniary jurisdiction downward from the 2019 Act's own original figures — District Commission jurisdiction is currently up to Rs. 50 lakh, not the Rs. 1 crore the Act itself originally specified.

💡 Paper 20 is a 100-mark elective chosen at enrolment from three options and is not modelled here, so this group's modelled total is 300 marks (Papers 17-19) rather than the official group's full 400.

Where CMA Final's marks come from

Eight papers of 100 marks under Syllabus 2022, arranged in two groups of four (Papers 13-16 and 17-20). Paper 20 is an elective chosen at enrolment from three options, and is not modelled on this hub, since a question set built for one elective is of no use to a candidate who chose another — this hub covers Papers 13-19, the seven compulsory papers, in full. Every paper carries the same 30% MCQ (Section A, no negative marking) plus 70% descriptive (Section B) split as Intermediate. Click any block to open its chapters:

Corporate and Economic Laws100 marks · 14.3%
Group III. Companies Act governance provisions share the paper with securities, competition, FEMA, PMLA and consumer-protection law — several of which carry recently changed, easy-to-get-wrong numeric thresholds.
Strategic Financial Management100 marks · 14.3%
Group III. Advanced capital budgeting, security analysis, portfolio theory, derivatives and forex risk — this hub aliases almost the entire paper from CA Final's own Advanced Financial Management content.
Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation100 marks · 14.3%
Group III. Company, firm and trust taxation, GAAR, transfer pricing and international tax treaties — aliased wholesale from CA Final's Direct Tax paper, which examines an identical body of law.
Strategic Cost Management100 marks · 14.3%
Group III. Target/kaizen/life-cycle costing, throughput accounting, value analysis, and the paper's quantitative core — linear programming, transportation and assignment problems, simulation and decision theory, and project crashing.
Cost and Management Audit100 marks · 14.3%
Group IV. The statutory cost-audit framework — applicability thresholds, appointment, CRA-2/3/4 filing — plus management, operational and performance (three-Es) audit.
Corporate Financial Reporting100 marks · 14.3%
Group IV. Ind AS application, aliased wholesale from CA Final's Financial Reporting paper, extended with integrated reporting, BRSR and government accounting.
Indirect Tax Laws and Practice100 marks · 14.3%
Group IV. GST at full depth plus customs law and foreign trade policy — aliased wholesale from CA Final's Indirect Tax Laws paper.

Topic-wise weightage — what to study first

Question counts per topic, distilled from previous-year paper analyses. Click any topic with a link to open its full chapter.

🎯 Section A's Companies Act governance provisions reward the same provision-application-conclusion discipline as every other law paper on this hub. Section B's economic laws carry several recently revised numeric thresholds — the Competition Act's 2023-24 deal-value test, the Consumer Protection Act's 2021-revised jurisdiction figures — that are worth learning precisely rather than approximately, since an outdated figure is a wrong answer, not a partially-right one.

🎯 This paper examines the same advanced financial-management body of knowledge CA Final's Advanced Financial Management paper does, so this hub teaches it through that exact content. Build advanced capital budgeting and security analysis first, since portfolio theory and derivatives both lean on the same discounting and risk-pricing logic those two chapters establish.

🎯 An identical body of tax law to CA Final's own Direct Tax Laws paper, aliased wholesale. Build the taxation-of-entities chapters first, since GAAR, transfer pricing and treaty relief all assume the underlying company/firm/trust computation skeleton is already automatic.

🎯 Section A engineers cost down proactively — target costing before production, kaizen costing during it, throughput accounting for a constrained factory. Section B is this paper's purest operations-research content, with no direct equivalent anywhere else on this hub: linear programming's corner-point property, the transportation and assignment problems, and decision theory's EMV-versus-Maximin distinction are all examined through full numerical setups, not one-line definitions.

🎯 Section A's cost-audit law is precise-numbers territory — turnover thresholds, appointment deadlines, the CRA-2/3/4 filing timeline — worth memorising exactly rather than approximately. Section B's management, operational and performance audit is classificatory: correctly identifying which audit type a described exercise represents, and evaluating a scenario against all three Es (economy, efficiency, effectiveness) independently, is what actually earns marks.

🎯 Ind AS application is aliased wholesale from CA Final's own Financial Reporting paper, which examines the identical accounting standards. Group the standards by what they govern — presentation, assets, liabilities, revenue, consolidation — the same grouping CA Final's own method chapter uses, and treat integrated reporting, BRSR and government accounting as three additional, genuinely distinct reporting frameworks rather than extensions of Ind AS itself.

🎯 Aliased wholesale from CA Final's own Indirect Tax Laws paper, which examines identical GST and customs law. GST resolves almost every question to supply, time, value and place; customs at this depth goes well beyond Intermediate's outline treatment into full valuation, classification and procedural detail.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Paper 20 is an elective chosen at enrolment from three specialist options. A question set built for one elective is of no use to a candidate who chose a different one, so — following the same approach this hub already uses for CS Professional's electives — Paper 20 is not modelled, and this hub's content covers Papers 13-19 in full.

A large share of it — Strategic Financial Management, Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation, Corporate Financial Reporting's Ind AS content, and Indirect Tax Laws all examine essentially the same underlying body of law, accounting standards or financial theory that CA Final's own papers examine, so this hub aliases those subjects directly rather than duplicating the content. Strategic Cost Management and Cost and Management Audit are genuinely new, CMA-specific content with no CA Final equivalent.

Both were current as of this content's last review. The deal-value threshold (Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023) took effect 10 September 2024; the Rs. 50 lakh District Commission jurisdiction comes from the Consumer Protection (Jurisdiction) Rules, 2021, which revised the 2019 Act's own original Rs. 1 crore figure downward. Always confirm against the current syllabus and any subsequent notification before an exam attempt, since these are exactly the kind of numeric thresholds that get revised.

The same structure as Intermediate: at least 40 marks in each individual paper of a group, and at least 50% of the group's aggregate, with an exemption available at 60% or more in an individual paper for a limited number of subsequent attempts if the whole group is not cleared.

No — passing both Final groups is necessary but not sufficient. The 15-month practical training requirement (which can begin as early as Intermediate registration) must also be substantially complete before a Final-group result is declared, and only then does a candidate become eligible for ICMAI membership and the right to practise, including conducting statutory cost audits.
