Verbal Aptitude
Verbal Aptitude is the part of General Aptitude that engineering candidates most often treat as unlearnable, on the assumption that it depends on how much English you happen to have absorbed. That assumption is wrong, and it is expensive: General Aptitude is 15 of the 100 marks, and roughly half of those marks are verbal.
Every verbal question in GATE is decided by one of two things. Either it is a structural question, where a grammatical rule identifies exactly one option as correct. Or it is a textual question, where the answer is fixed by what the passage actually asserts.
Neither type is decided by what sounds right. Native-speaker intuition is a useful tiebreaker and a terrible primary method, because the wrong options in a well-set question are built specifically to sound right.
The second principle matters even more. In a reading comprehension or verbal-reasoning question, the passage is the entire universe. Outside knowledge is not merely unnecessary; it is the commonest source of wrong answers, because a distractor that is true in the world but unstated in the passage is far more attractive than an obviously wrong one.
Hold those two and the section becomes systematic.
1. What GATE Tests Under "Verbal Aptitude"
The official syllabus lists basic English grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, narrative sequencing and verbal deduction. In practice the questions fall into a small number of recurring shapes.

Sentence-completion and error questions are the most mechanically learnable, because the rules involved are few and they repeat. The sections below cover the ones GATE actually uses, rather than a full grammar syllabus.
2. Subject-Verb Agreement
A verb agrees with its subject in number. Almost every question on this topic works by putting distance between the subject and the verb, so the wrong answer agrees with whatever noun sits nearest.
A phrase between the subject and the verb never changes the subject. In "The list of items is on the desk", the subject is list, not items, so the verb is singular. This is the single most tested pattern in the whole area.
Certain subject forms have fixed behaviour and are worth memorising as a block.

Collective nouns take a singular verb when the group acts as a unit and a plural verb when its members act individually. "The committee has decided" treats it as one body; "The committee are divided among themselves" treats it as several people.
Nouns that look plural but are singular in meaning — news, mathematics, physics, economics — take a singular verb. So does a quantity treated as one amount: "Ten kilometres is a long walk."
3. Tense and Sequence
GATE rarely tests exotic tenses. It tests whether the tense chosen matches the time relationship the sentence describes.
The past perfect exists to mark the earlier of two past events. "The train had left before we reached the station" is correct; using simple past for both loses the ordering that the sentence exists to convey.
The present perfect connects a past action to the present and is therefore incompatible with a finished past time expression. "I have finished the report yesterday" is wrong for exactly this reason; either drop yesterday or use the simple past.
A time clause takes the present tense to express future time. "When he arrives, we will begin" is correct, not "when he will arrive". This trips up a large fraction of candidates because the meaning is plainly future.
Conditionals follow three fixed patterns that repay memorisation as templates rather than as rules.

The second-conditional form with were for all persons — "If I were you" — survives specifically in this construction and is regularly tested.
4. Modifiers, Parallelism and Pronouns
A modifying phrase attaches to whatever noun it stands next to. When that noun is not the intended one, the result is a dangling or misplaced modifier, and the sentence says something the writer did not mean.
"Walking down the road, the temple came into view" claims the temple was walking. The fix is to give the participle a subject to attach to: "Walking down the road, we saw the temple."
Placement changes meaning even when nothing is technically dangling. "He only ate the rice" and "He ate only the rice" differ in what is being restricted, and GATE has used exactly this contrast.
Elements joined by a coordinating conjunction must share the same grammatical form. "She likes reading, writing and to travel" breaks parallelism; the third element should be travelling.
Correlative pairs impose parallelism more strictly still. In "not only X but also Y", whatever follows not only must match in form whatever follows but also.
A pronoun must have exactly one possible antecedent. "When Ram met Shyam, he was tired" is ambiguous, and the ambiguity is the error the question is asking you to spot. Correcting it requires naming the person, not choosing a different pronoun.
5. Articles and Prepositions
Articles are decided by whether the noun is specific and by how the following word is pronounced, not spelled.
The choice between "a" and "an" follows sound. It is an hour because the h is silent, and a university because the u is pronounced as a consonant sound. Spelling is irrelevant, which is precisely why these items appear.
The definite article marks something already identified, unique, or specified by a following phrase: "the sun", "the book I lent you". Its absence marks something general: "Books are expensive."
Prepositions in English are largely idiomatic, which means they must be learned as collocations. A small set recurs constantly.

Note that "prefer" and "superior" take to, never than. The comparative-sounding meaning invites than, which is why the error is so common and so frequently tested.
6. Vocabulary, Word Groups and Analogies
Word-group questions give a pair of words and ask for another pair in the same relation. The relation is the answer, not the words, and naming it explicitly before looking at the options prevents almost every wrong choice.

State the relation as a full sentence. For "surgeon : scalpel" the sentence is "a surgeon uses a scalpel as a tool of their trade". Now test each option against that exact sentence, and options that share only the topic drop out immediately.
Direction matters. If the given pair runs from lesser to greater, an option running from greater to lesser is wrong however well the words match.
For vocabulary in context, the surrounding sentence usually fixes the meaning even for an unfamiliar word. Signal words are the lever: however, although and yet mark contrast, so the blank takes a word opposing what preceded; moreover, hence and therefore mark continuation, so it takes a word agreeing with it.
7. Reading Comprehension
A GATE comprehension passage is short and dense, and the questions are of three kinds: what the passage states, what follows from it, and what the author's attitude is.
For a "which of the following is stated" question, the answer must be locatable in a specific sentence. If you cannot point to that sentence, the option is wrong even when it is true and reasonable.
Inference questions ask for what must follow, not for what probably follows. The test is whether the option could be false while the passage remains entirely true. If it could, it is not an inference.
The most attractive wrong options are the ones that are true in the world. A distractor drawn from general knowledge feels correct because it is correct, just not according to this passage. Discipline here is worth more than reading speed.
Two further distractor patterns recur. Extreme quantifiers — all, never, only, always — usually overstate a passage that said most or often. And scope shifts replace the passage's subject with a broader or narrower one, so a claim about a study of engineering graduates becomes a claim about graduates generally.
Tone questions are decided by the adjectives and verbs the author chose. A passage using unfortunately, failed and misguided is critical; one using notes, reports and observes is neutral. Neutral is more often the answer than candidates expect, because academic prose is mostly neutral.
8. Verbal Deduction
Verbal deduction gives statements and asks which conclusion follows. Validity is about form, not truth. A conclusion follows if it must be true whenever the premises are true, regardless of whether the premises are true in reality.
The four standard statement forms and what they permit are worth holding exactly.

"All A are B" does not give "All B are A". This single confusion accounts for a large share of errors in this area. All engineers are graduates does not make all graduates engineers.
Two negative premises yield no conclusion at all. Two particular premises — both beginning with some — likewise yield nothing. If a question's premises are both particular, an option claiming a definite conclusion can be eliminated without further work.
For "either/or" conclusions, the pair is valid when the two options between them exhaust the possibilities and neither alone is certain. This is the one place where two individually invalid conclusions combine into a valid pair.
A quick and reliable method for the all and some forms is to draw them as regions: a circle inside a circle for all, overlapping circles for some, disjoint circles for no. A conclusion follows only if it holds for every arrangement the premises permit, so it is the arrangement that breaks the conclusion that you are hunting for.
9. Narrative Sequencing
Sequencing questions give four or five sentences labelled P, Q, R, S and ask for the order forming a coherent paragraph. The links are grammatical, not thematic, which is what makes them solvable rather than a matter of taste.
The opening sentence introduces its subject with a full noun phrase and no back-reference. A sentence beginning with this, these, such, it, he or therefore is referring to something already said, so it cannot come first.
Then chain the sentences by matching each referring expression to its referent. If exactly one sentence mentions "the algorithm" by name and another says "this algorithm", their order is fixed regardless of what else is unclear.
Connectives fix order too. However and but require something to contrast with; for example requires a preceding general claim; consequently requires a preceding cause.
The efficient technique is to establish one confident pair rather than the whole sequence, then eliminate every option violating it. Two secure pairs almost always leave a single option standing.
10. Worked Examples
Example 1. Choose the correct option: "Neither the manager nor the engineers ____ willing to accept the revised schedule." (a) was (b) were (c) has been (d) is
With neither A nor B, the verb agrees with the subject nearer to it, which is engineers, a plural.
The answer is therefore were.
Note what makes this question work: reversing the order to "Neither the engineers nor the manager" would change the correct verb to was. The rule is about position, not about which subject seems more important. Answer: (b).
Example 2. Identify the error: "Having completed the assignment, the laptop was shut down and the student went to sleep."
The participial phrase "Having completed the assignment" must attach to the subject of the main clause, which here is the laptop. The sentence therefore claims the laptop completed the assignment.
The error is a dangling modifier.
The correction requires giving the phrase the right subject: "Having completed the assignment, the student shut down the laptop and went to sleep."
Note that the sentence contains no grammatical mistake in the narrow sense — every verb agrees and every tense is consistent. The error is one of attachment, which is why reading for sound alone misses it.
Example 3. Select the pair with the same relation as "famine : hunger". (a) drought : rain (b) epidemic : disease (c) flood : damage (d) storm : wind
First state the relation as a sentence: a famine is a large-scale event whose defining consequence is widespread hunger. The relation is cause to characteristic effect, with the second term being the effect.
Option (a) inverts it, since drought is defined by the absence of rain rather than its production.
Option (d) is a whole-to-component relation, since wind is part of what a storm consists of, not a consequence of it.
Option (b) has the same structure as (a) in that an epidemic is defined by disease rather than causing it as an outcome.
Option (c) fits exactly: a flood is a large-scale event whose defining consequence is widespread damage. Answer: (c).
Example 4. A passage states: "In the survey, 62 per cent of respondents who had used the new interface reported completing the task faster, although objective timing data showed no significant difference." Which conclusion follows? (a) The new interface is faster. (b) The respondents were mistaken about the interface. (c) Perceived speed and measured speed diverged in this survey. (d) Objective timing data are unreliable.
Option (a) contradicts the passage, which reports no significant measured difference.
Option (b) overstates. The passage records a divergence, but "mistaken" attributes an error to the respondents, and a perception of speed is not obviously a claim that can be mistaken in the way a measurement can.
Option (d) introduces a judgement about measurement reliability that the passage never makes. It is the classic outside-knowledge distractor: plausible, and entirely unstated.
Option (c) restates exactly what the passage asserts and nothing more. It must be true if the passage is true. Answer: (c).
Example 5. Statements: All programmers are analysts. Some analysts are managers. Which conclusion follows? (a) Some programmers are managers. (b) Some analysts are programmers. (c) All managers are analysts. (d) No programmer is a manager.
Take the conversions one at a time. From "All programmers are analysts", the valid conversion is "Some analysts are programmers", which is option (b).
Option (a) does not follow. The analysts who are managers might be entirely outside the programmer group, and nothing in the premises prevents that arrangement.
Option (c) reverses "Some analysts are managers", which permits managers who are not analysts.
Option (d) is not forced either. Since (a) is possible without being necessary, its negation cannot be necessary. Answer: (b).
Example 6. Arrange P, Q, R, S into a coherent paragraph. P: This approach, however, fails when the data are sparse. Q: Machine translation systems originally worked by matching phrases in large parallel corpora. R: Neural methods addressed the problem by learning continuous representations. S: Such representations allow the system to generalise to unseen phrases.
Q opens: it introduces its subject with a full noun phrase and contains no back-reference.
P must follow Q, since "This approach" refers to the phrase-matching method Q describes, and however requires something to contrast with.
R follows P, since "the problem" refers to the sparse-data failure P introduces.
S follows R, since "Such representations" refers to the continuous representations R names.
The order is Q, P, R, S — and note that it was fixed entirely by referring expressions, without any judgement about which idea is more important.
Summary
Verbal Aptitude is decided by structure or by the text, never by what sounds right.
Subject-verb agreement questions work by separating the subject from the verb. Ignore intervening phrases, and learn the fixed forms: each and every are singular, a number of is plural, either-or agrees with the nearer subject.
Past perfect marks the earlier of two past events, and a time clause takes the present tense for future meaning.
A modifying phrase attaches to the adjacent noun, so a participial opener needs the intended subject to follow it. Coordinated elements must share a grammatical form.
Prefer and superior take to, never than. Article choice follows pronunciation, not spelling.
For analogies, state the relation as a full sentence first, then test options against it, and respect direction.
In comprehension, the passage is the whole universe. Reject options that are true in the world but unstated, that use extreme quantifiers, or that shift scope.
In verbal deduction, "All A are B" converts only to "Some B are A". Two negative or two particular premises yield nothing.
In sequencing, find the sentence with no back-reference to open, then chain by referring expressions and connectives, and eliminate options with a single secure pair.
