Logical & Verbal Reasoning — IBPS PO Reasoning
This is the block that feels like opinion but isn't. In Mains, logical/verbal reasoning — statement-assumption, inference, strong/weak arguments, cause & effect, course of action, and syllogism-style "conclusion" questions — is 5–7 marks, and it's where careless readers bleed and disciplined ones bank. Every question type has a rule set that removes the guesswork: answers must live inside the given statement, extreme options are usually wrong, and your own real-world knowledge is strictly off-limits. Master the rules and this is as objective as an inequality.
1. What IBPS actually asks
The Mains "critical reasoning" family, one or two questions each:
- Statement & Assumption — what is taken for granted in the statement.
- Statement & Inference / Conclusion — what definitely follows from it.
- Strong vs Weak Arguments — is a given argument relevant and substantial?
- Cause & Effect — is one event the cause of another?
- Course of Action — is a proposed action a proper, advisable response?
All share one meta-rule: treat the statement as the only universe; nothing you know outside it counts.
2. Statement & Assumption
An assumption is something the speaker must be taking for granted for the statement to make sense — never something merely stated.
- Test: negate the assumption. If negating it destroys the statement's logic, it is assumed. (This "negation test" settles most cases.)
- Reject: anything already stated (that's a fact, not an assumption), anything too extreme/universal, and any "obvious world knowledge" not needed by the statement.
Example: "Visit our clinic for painless dental care." Assumed: people prefer painless care (negate it → the ad makes no sense ⇒ assumed). Not assumed: "this is the only painless clinic" (too strong; not required).
3. Inference & conclusion
An inference is what can be logically drawn from the statement as (probably/definitely) true; a conclusion must follow directly. The discipline is identical to RC and syllogism:
- Stay inside the statement. If it isn't supported by the given lines, it doesn't follow — however true in reality.
- Distrust "definitely / all / never". Data statements usually support only measured inferences.
- A conclusion that merely restates the statement is valid; one that adds new scope is not.
4. Strong vs Weak arguments
An argument is strong only if it is both relevant to the question AND substantial (addresses the real issue with real weight). It is weak if it is:
- Irrelevant to the exact question asked,
- Trivial / superficial, based on an isolated example,
- Ambiguous or a mere assumption,
- An appeal to fear/emotion without substance.
Ask two things: Does this argument actually address the question? and Is it weighty, not just an example? Both yes ⇒ strong.
Example — Q: "Should India privatise all PSU banks?" "Yes, private banks are always efficient" is weak (over-general, unsupported). "No, PSU banks are the main channel for financial inclusion and rural credit" is strong (relevant + substantial).
5. Cause & Effect
Given two events, decide their relationship: one is the cause of the other, both are effects of a common cause, or they're independent. Rules:
- The cause precedes the effect in time — check the ordering.
- Two events can both be effects of a third factor (correlation ≠ causation).
- Beware reversing cause and effect, and beware assuming causation from mere co-occurrence.
6. Course of Action
A course of action is a follow-up step proposed to solve a problem in the statement. It follows only if it is both practical AND directly addresses the problem (not a token or extreme response):
- Reject actions that are impractical, draconian, or don't tackle the stated problem.
- Accept actions that are feasible and squarely address the issue.
- Often the answer is "only I follows" or "either I or II" — evaluate each action independently against practicality + relevance.
Solved examples
Q1 (assumption). Statement: "The bank has introduced an app so customers can avoid branch visits." Assumption: (I) Customers have smartphones. (II) The app has no bugs.

Q2 (strong/weak). Q: "Should ATM withdrawal limits be reduced?" Argument: "No, it would inconvenience genuine customers who need cash."

8. The protocol
- Identify the sub-type (assumption / inference / argument / cause-effect / course of action) — each has its own rule.
- Stay strictly inside the statement; ban all outside knowledge.
- For assumptions, apply the negation test.
- For arguments/actions, demand relevance + substance/practicality; reject extreme, trivial or off-topic options.
- Reject "too strong" wording by default; prefer the measured option.
