⚡ What changed recently

  • JEE Advanced 2026 is organised by IIT Roorkee and is scheduled for 17 May 2026, with Paper 1 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and Paper 2 from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The organising IIT rotates annually and does not change the syllabus.
  • Both papers are compulsory and are written on the same day. A candidate absent from either paper is not considered for ranking at all, which makes pacing across a six-hour examination day part of the preparation rather than an afterthought.
  • The marking scheme is deliberately not fixed year to year. Partial marking on multiple-correct questions, and whether integer answers carry negative marking, are announced in the instructions of the paper itself — so reading the instruction screen carefully in the first two minutes is genuinely worth marks.
  • Eligibility is capped at two attempts in two consecutive years, unlike JEE Main's three. This makes the choice of which year to attempt a real strategic decision rather than a formality.

ONLY THE TOP 2.5 LAKH PROCEED

JEE Main Paper 1 — qualifying stage

Ranking among the top 2,50,000 candidates across all categories in JEE Main Paper 1 is what makes a candidate eligible to register for JEE Advanced. The JEE Main score itself carries no weight beyond this eligibility gate.

PRODUCES THE ALL INDIA RANK USED FOR IIT ADMISSION

JEE Advanced Paper 1 and Paper 2

Both papers, 180 marks each, on the same day. Three sections per paper — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — with mixed question types whose marking scheme is stated in the paper's instructions. Aggregate marks across both papers determine the rank.

SEAT ALLOCATION

JoSAA counselling, and AAT where applicable

The rank feeds JoSAA counselling across the IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs in a common process. Candidates seeking B.Arch at IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee must additionally clear the Architecture Aptitude Test.

Where JEE Advanced's 360 marks come from

Two compulsory papers on the same day, three hours each, 180 marks apiece. Both papers cover all three subjects, so Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics each contribute roughly 120 marks across the two. Unlike JEE Main, the question types and marking scheme are deliberately changed from year to year — single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MSQs, integer and decimal answers, and matching-list questions appear in varying proportions with partial marking that is announced only in the paper's own instructions. The per-chapter counts below are therefore estimates from previous-year analyses. Click any subject to open its chapters:

🎯 The distinguishing feature of Advanced Physics is that a single question routinely spans two or three chapters, so chapter-wise mastery is necessary but nowhere near sufficient. Mechanics is the deepest well: Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work-Energy-Power, Rotational Motion and Gravitation together underpin a large share of the paper, and rotational dynamics combined with energy methods is a perennial source of hard problems. Electrostatics and magnetism are treated far more rigorously than in JEE Main, with genuine field integration rather than symmetric special cases. Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory reward reasoning about processes rather than substituting into formulas. Practise writing the constraint relations and the energy or momentum bookkeeping explicitly, because Advanced problems punish mental shortcuts that work at Main level.

🎯 Advanced Chemistry differs from Main in kind, not just difficulty. Organic Chemistry moves decisively from product prediction to mechanism: stereochemistry, reaction intermediates and multi-step synthesis dominate, and a candidate who memorised named reactions without understanding GOC will find almost nothing transfers. Physical Chemistry becomes genuinely calculation-heavy, with Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry and Kinetics all capable of multi-step numerical problems. Inorganic Chemistry rewards structural reasoning over recall — Coordination Compounds in particular is examined through geometry, isomerism and crystal field arguments rather than through remembered facts. Qualitative analysis and the chemistry of specific p-block and d-block compounds appear more often than candidates expect.

🎯 Advanced Mathematics is constructed so that the correct first step is not obvious, which is precisely what separates it from JEE Main. Questions reward recognising structure — a symmetry, an invariant, a substitution that collapses the problem — over applying a remembered template, and a candidate whose preparation consists of solved-example recall will stall on the first unfamiliar phrasing. Calculus remains the largest block, with Limits, Continuity and Differentiability examined through genuinely pathological functions rather than routine ones, and Integrals often requiring a non-obvious substitution or a symmetry argument. Coordinate Geometry is split here into Straight Lines and Circles and a separate Conic Sections chapter, both of which reward parametric methods. Probability and Combinatorics are the areas where careful case definition matters most, and where most avoidable marks are lost.

IIT Roorkee, on 17 May 2026. Paper 1 runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon and Paper 2 from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM on the same day. The organising institute rotates annually among the IITs under the Joint Admission Board, and the rotation does not change the syllabus.

Yes, and this is not negotiable. A candidate who does not appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 is not considered for ranking at all. Both papers cover all three subjects, so the six-hour examination day is itself part of what is being tested, and building stamina across two full-length papers should be part of preparation.

It deliberately changes from year to year. Single-correct MCQs normally carry a penalty for a wrong answer; multiple-correct questions usually award partial marks for a partially correct selection but penalise any incorrect option chosen; integer and decimal-answer questions often carry no penalty. The exact scheme for your paper appears in its own instructions, and reading that screen carefully in the first two minutes is genuinely worth marks.

In kind, not merely in difficulty. Main questions generally test one concept with a clear entry point; Advanced questions routinely span two or three chapters and are constructed so that the correct first step is not obvious. Organic Chemistry shifts from product prediction to mechanism, Physics problems combine mechanics with electromagnetism or thermodynamics, and Mathematics rewards recognising structure over applying templates.

A maximum of two times, and only in two consecutive years. This is stricter than JEE Main, which allows three consecutive years, and it means the decision of which year to attempt is a genuine strategic one — a candidate who is underprepared in their first eligible year spends one of only two attempts.

You must rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates across all categories in JEE Main Paper 1, be born on or after 1 October 2001 with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates, and have appeared in Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

IISc Bangalore's four-year Bachelor of Science, the IISERs, IIST Thiruvananthapuram and RGIPT all admit through the JEE Advanced channel, each with its own cutoff and application process separate from JoSAA. Candidates seeking B.Arch at IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee must additionally clear the Architecture Aptitude Test.
