Two distinctions are worth fixing clearly. First, the "Motivation" inside Goleman's model is a personal trait — persistence, optimism, drive for its own sake — and is a different idea from the intrinsic-versus-extrinsic motivation theory covered as its own topic elsewhere in this subject; don't conflate the two just because they share a name. 4. Vygotsky's socio-cultural view — the emotional dimension

What belongs specifically here is a narrower point: Vygotsky explicitly rejected the idea that intellect and affect (emotion) could be studied as separate systems, arguing instead for their essential unity. Cognitive development, in his account, happens first between people (interpsychological — a child working through a problem alongside a more capable partner) before it is internalised within the individual (intrapsychological), and that social process is inseparable from the emotional relationship carrying it. A child does not absorb scaffolding from a teacher or peer they don't trust or feel safe with in the same way they absorb it from someone they do.
Vygotsky captured this with the concept of perezhivanie — a child's lived, subjective emotional experience of an event or environment, which shapes how that event goes on to influence development. The same classroom event — a public correction, a difficult task, a disruption at home — is not experienced identically by every child; how a given child emotionally processes it, not just the event itself, determines its developmental impact. The direct classroom implication is that cooperative and peer-supported learning works on two levels at once: it scaffolds cognitive skill and provides the emotional safety within which a learner is willing to attempt something just beyond their current ability — the same social relationship carries both functions simultaneously.
5. Adolescent emotional development in Classes VI-VIII
Classes VI-VIII correspond roughly to ages 11-14 — the onset of early adolescence and, for many learners, the physical and hormonal changes of puberty. Those physical changes form the backdrop, not the full explanation, for a recognisable cluster of emotional shifts: heightened self-consciousness, more frequent and intense mood swings, greater sensitivity to peer judgement, and a sharp rise in the importance of the peer group relative to family.
Developmental psychologist David Elkind named two forms of adolescent egocentrism that are directly useful for reading classroom behaviour at this age:
- Imaginary audience — the belief that one is constantly being watched and evaluated by others, even when no one is actually paying particular attention. The single most important teaching implication is this: emotional volatility at this age is developmentally typical, not automatically a discipline problem.
