Ecosystems, Biodiversity & Conservation — UPSC GS Paper I
Weightage: 6–7 questions — Environment's biggest single chapter, since protected area categories, IUCN status, and flagship species facts recur across a large share of the paper's environment questions.
1. Ecosystem structure and energy flow
An ecosystem comprises biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components interacting as a functional unit. Trophic levels: producers (autotrophs, chiefly green plants, fix energy via photosynthesis) → primary consumers (herbivores) → secondary consumers (primary carnivores) → tertiary consumers (secondary carnivores/apex predators) → decomposers (bacteria/fungi, recycle nutrients from dead organic matter at every level).
10% Law (Lindeman's Law): only about 10% of energy at one trophic level transfers to the next; ~90% is lost as heat (respiration), limiting most food chains to 3-5 trophic levels — this is why apex predators (tigers, lions) are always relatively FEW in number compared to herbivores, since very little energy remains by the top trophic level.
Ecological pyramids: pyramid of energy is ALWAYS upright (energy loss is guaranteed at each transfer); pyramids of numbers/biomass CAN be inverted in specific ecosystems (e.g., a single large tree supporting many insects gives an inverted numbers pyramid).
2. Levels of biodiversity and India's hotspots
Three levels: Genetic diversity (variation within a species); Species diversity (variety of species in a region); Ecosystem diversity (variety of habitats/ecological processes).
Biodiversity hotspots — regions with exceptionally high species richness AND endemism, facing significant habitat loss threat (a concept developed by Norman Myers). India has FOUR biodiversity hotspots: the Himalaya, the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, the Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland (Nicobar Islands).
3. IUCN Red List — conservation status categories
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the Red List, categorising species by extinction risk, in DESCENDING order of threat: Extinct (EX) → Extinct in the Wild (EW) → Critically Endangered (CR) → Endangered (EN) → Vulnerable (VU) → Near Threatened (NT) → Least Concern (LC) — the three categories CR/EN/VU are collectively termed "threatened" categories.
India's frequently tested species by status: Critically Endangered — Great Indian Bustard (grassland habitat, Rajasthan/Gujarat, threatened by power-line collisions), Gharial (riverine crocodilian); Endangered — Asian Elephant, Snow Leopard, Red Panda; Vulnerable — Indian (One-horned) Rhinoceros (Kaziranga, Assam — though improved from Endangered due to successful conservation), Asiatic Lion (Gir Forest, Gujarat — its ONLY wild habitat in the world).

Key conservation projects: Project Tiger (1973) — India's flagship tiger conservation programme, launched after alarming population decline surveys; Project Elephant (1992) — similar flagship programme for elephant conservation and human-elephant conflict management; both administered under the National Tiger Conservation Authority (Project Tiger specifically) and relevant ministry divisions.
5. International conventions on biodiversity and wildlife trade
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), 1973: regulates/restricts INTERNATIONAL TRADE in endangered species and their parts/derivatives (ivory, tiger skins) through a permit system, categorising species into Appendices I/II/III by trade-restriction severity (Appendix I = most restricted, trade banned except in exceptional circumstances).
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), 1992 (Rio Earth Summit): a broader international treaty with THREE main objectives — conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of its components, and fair/equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources; India is a signatory and has enacted the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 domestically to implement CBD obligations, establishing the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).
Ramsar Convention, 1971: specifically focused on WETLAND conservation (distinct from CITES's trade focus and CBD's broader biodiversity focus).
Common traps UPSC sets here
- National Parks allow NO human activity; Wildlife Sanctuaries MAY permit some restricted activity — a frequently tested distinction; don't treat the two categories as identical in permitted human use.
- Biosphere Reserves are NOT purely wildlife-focused — their three-zone structure (core/buffer/transition) explicitly includes sustainable human use in the transition zone, a broader concept than a National Park or Sanctuary.
- CITES regulates TRADE specifically; CBD is a BROADER biodiversity treaty (conservation + sustainable use + benefit-sharing); Ramsar is WETLAND-specific — three different international instruments with three different specific scopes, frequently tested against each other.
- The Asiatic Lion's ONLY wild habitat is Gir Forest, Gujarat — a frequently tested standalone fact, sometimes confused with African lion habitats.
- India has FOUR biodiversity hotspots, not three or five — Himalaya, Western Ghats+Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma, Sundaland; a precise, closed list.
- The 10% law explains why apex predators are naturally FEW — don't describe low predator numbers as primarily due to hunting/poaching alone; the underlying ecological/energetic reason is the trophic energy loss at each level.
- Ramsar Convention (1971) predates CBD (1992) — a frequently tested chronological fact when questions ask which international environmental instrument came first.

Exam protocol
- For protected-area-category questions, first check whether human activity is permitted (Sanctuary) or prohibited (National Park), then check for a multi-zone sustainable-use structure (Biosphere Reserve) before answering.
- For species-status questions, always pair the species with BOTH its exact IUCN category (not just "endangered" generically) AND its specific threat/habitat context.
- Treat CITES/CBD/Ramsar as three distinct international instruments with three distinct scopes (trade/broad biodiversity/wetlands specifically) — never assume they're interchangeable or that one supersedes another.
- Memorise India's four biodiversity hotspots as a single fixed list, since "which of the following is NOT a biodiversity hotspot" is a very common question format.
- For "why are predator numbers naturally low" questions, default to the 10% law/energy flow mechanism as the ecological explanation, distinct from anthropogenic threats like poaching (which is a separate, additional pressure).
