How toppers play this section
The optional is the only block of Mains where candidates are not writing from the same shared material, so scores spread far more widely than in General Studies. Choose on six tests applied in order — sustained interest, material and evaluation availability, genuine background, syllabus hours, honest GS overlap, and depth required — and discard anything that fails the first two. Treat published success-rate tables as noise: they are dominated by selection effect and say nothing about what a subject will do for you. Once chosen, finish the first complete pass before Prelims and start timed answer-writing at month three.
