When he actually walks in, the audience's expectation is confirmed — but the shock is still effective. SITUATIONAL IRONY: The daughters claim to have loved and cared for grandfather — but neither noticed he had changed his daily habit from tea to whisky. This detail reveals that neither daughter actually paid attention to him.
