EUCLID'S FIFTH POSTULATE: If a straight line falls on two straight lines and makes the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles (i.e., less than 180°), then the two straight lines, if produced indefinitely, will meet on that side on which the angles are less than two right angles. PLAYFAIR'S AXIOM (equivalent): For every line l and every point P not on l, there exists one and only one line through P that is parallel to l. (OR: Through a given point, exactly one line can be drawn parallel to a given line.) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Euclid's Fifth Postulate is notably more complex than the other 4 postulates. Mathematicians felt it seemed more like a theorem (something that should be proved) than a self-evident postulate. For nearly 2000 YEARS (from about 300 BCE to 1820s CE), the greatest mathematical minds tried to prove the Fifth Postulate using only the first four postulates — all attempts failed. BREAKTHROUGH (19th Century): János Bolyai (Hungary, 1832) and Nikolai Lobachevsky (Russia, 1829), working independently, discovered something revolutionary: it is possible to have a completely CONSISTENT geometry in which the Fifth Postulate is FALSE (hyperbolic geometry, where multiple parallel lines exist through a point). Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann (Germany, 1854) developed yet another geometry (elliptic/spherical geometry) where NO parallel lines exist. These are called NON-EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRIES. CONCLUSION: The Fifth Postulate is INDEPENDENT of the other four — it cannot be proved or disproved from them. It is a genuine assumption, not derivable. Euclidean geometry (flat) with the Fifth Postulate and non-Euclidean geometries are all logically valid.
