ROTATION vs REVOLUTION COMPARISON: (i) DEFINITION: Rotation = Earth spinning on its OWN AXIS (imaginary line from North Pole to South Pole). Revolution = Earth orbiting the SUN in its elliptical path. (ii) TIME TAKEN: Rotation = 24 hours (1 day). Revolution = 365¼ days (1 year — the extra ¼ day accumulates into a LEAP YEAR every 4 years). (iii) DIRECTION: Both: West to East (counterclockwise viewed from above North Pole). Sun rises in the EAST because Earth rotates West to East. (iv) EFFECT: Rotation → DAY AND NIGHT (the half of Earth facing the Sun has day; the other half has night). Revolution → SEASONS (due to axial tilt). WHY TILT, NOT DISTANCE CAUSES SEASONS: Evidence: Earth is CLOSEST to the Sun (147 million km, perihelion) around January 3 — yet it is WINTER in the Northern Hemisphere then. Earth is FARTHEST (152 million km, aphelion) around July 4 — yet it is SUMMER in the Northern Hemisphere. Distance obviously cannot cause seasons. ACTUAL CAUSE: Earth's axis is tilted at 23½° from vertical. During June-September, the Northern Hemisphere tilts TOWARD the Sun: sunlight hits more directly (more concentrated). Days are longer (more hours of sunlight). More total solar energy received → SUMMER. During December-March, the Northern Hemisphere tilts AWAY from the Sun: sunlight hits at a lower angle (less concentrated, spread over larger area). Days are shorter → WINTER. The Southern Hemisphere experiences the OPPOSITE simultaneously.
