Question 1

A candidate computes the goodwill arising on an amalgamation correctly, in the margin of the answer sheet, and writes only the final figure on the face of the balance sheet. The figure is right. Explain why this answer will still lose marks, and state the presentation rule ICAI's suggested answers follow.

Accepted Answer

The mark for goodwill in an amalgamation question is rarely a single mark for the number; it is distributed across the steps that produce it — the purchase consideration, the net assets taken over, and the difference between them. An examiner can only award the marks for those steps if the steps are visible. A margin computation is not part of the answer, is frequently not read, and in any case cannot be followed line by line. The rule ICAI's own suggested answers follow is that every computed figure on the face of a statement is followed by a reference such as (W.N. 3), and Working Note 3 appears below the statement, numbered, headed and worked in full. Copy that exactly. The practical consequence is significant in the other direction too: an answer presented this way can have an arithmetical error in the final figure and still earn most of the available marks, because the method is on the page.

Question 2

Two candidates answer the same question on borrowing costs. Candidate A writes two paragraphs setting out the definition of a qualifying asset, the conditions for commencement of capitalisation and the conditions for suspension. Candidate B writes four sentences identifying that the plant is a qualifying asset, that capitalisation is suspended for the three months of interruption, that the remaining period qualifies, and gives the amount. Explain which scores higher and what general principle this illustrates.

Accepted Answer

Candidate B scores substantially higher. The question asked what the treatment is on given facts, and B answered that question; A answered a different question, namely what the standard says. ICAI's suggested answers for standards problems have a consistent three-part shape — the relevant principle stated briefly, the principle applied to these particular facts, and the resulting treatment with an amount. A has supplied only the first part, and the first part is usually the smallest share of the mark. The general principle is that at Intermediate level the standard is never the question; the standard is the tool. A candidate who has only read the standards, and never worked problems on them, produces A's answer by default because it is the only answer that material supports. This is why reading must be paired with problem-working in the same sitting rather than deferred to revision.

Question 3

State the rule for attempting the 30-mark objective portion of CA Intermediate Advanced Accounting, and justify it. Contrast it with the correct rule at CA Foundation level.

Accepted Answer

The rule at Intermediate is that every objective question is attempted, with no exceptions and no deliberation about whether to attempt. The justification is that there is no negative marking on the objective portion at Intermediate or Final level, so an unattempted question is worth exactly zero and any answer is worth strictly more than zero in expectation. Deliberating about whether to attempt is therefore not merely unnecessary but actively costly, because it consumes time that could be spent on elimination. At Foundation the position looks different but reaches the same conclusion by a longer route: Papers 3 and 4 carry a penalty of 0.25 for a wrong answer, so a blind guess on four options returns (1/4)(+1) + (3/4)(-0.25) = +0.0625, still positive. A penalty of one-third would have made blind guessing break even. So the answer-everything rule holds at both levels; at Intermediate it holds trivially, at Foundation it holds because the penalty is milder than one-third.

Question 4

A candidate has 180 minutes for a paper carrying 70 descriptive marks and 30 objective marks. Set out a defensible time budget, and identify the specific behaviour that most often destroys it.

Accepted Answer

Reserve roughly 45 minutes for the objective portion, which is more than 30 marks would suggest on a straight pro-rata basis, because case-scenario MCQs require reading a scenario before any question can be answered and the reading is not compressible. That leaves about 130 minutes for 70 descriptive marks, or a little under two minutes a mark, with five minutes held back for checking. A sixteen-mark question therefore has about twenty-eight minutes and a five-mark question about nine. The behaviour that destroys this budget is not panic but its opposite: a long company-accounts question that is going well invites the candidate to keep going until it is perfect, and it will silently absorb forty-five minutes. The cost is not borne by that question, which was already earning well, but by the last question on the paper, which is then attempted in nine minutes or not at all. The discipline is to stop a question when its time is up even if it is unfinished, because the first marks on an unattempted question are far cheaper than the last marks on a nearly-finished one.

Question 5

ICAI groups the Accounting Standards into presentation and disclosure, assets, liabilities, items impacting the financial statements, revenue, and consolidation. Explain the single question each group answers, and why grouping them this way makes them easier to hold.

Presentation and disclosure standards answer: what must the reader be told over and above the numbers? They usually change disclosure rather than a figure. Asset standards answer: what goes into the carrying amount of this asset, and what happens to it afterwards? Every one of them is an initial measurement rule followed by a subsequent measurement rule. Liability standards answer: when does an obligation become something recorded rather than merely mentioned? Standards on items impacting the financial statements answer: something has disturbed figures you already have, so what do you do about it — an event after the balance sheet date, a change in policy or estimate, an exchange movement, a timing difference. Revenue standards answer: when has this been earned, as distinct from when has it been received? Consolidation standards answer: how much of another entity's numbers belong in ours, and by what mechanism? Grouping helps because within a group the standards become variations on one question rather than independent items, so recall is cued by the question rather than by the standard number. It also predicts what a question will ask: meeting an unfamiliar asset standard, you already know the examiner will want initial measurement and subsequent treatment.

Question 6

The syllabus opens with the framework for the preparation and presentation of financial statements and with applicability of Accounting Standards. Argue for studying these chapters late rather than first, and say what is nevertheless lost if they are skipped.

The framework is the most abstract material in the paper and the least useful to a candidate who has not yet seen a standard applied to a fact pattern. Read first, it is a wall of definitions with nothing to attach to, and it is usually read twice and retained once. Read after the asset standards, the company chapters and the standards on items impacting the financial statements, the same chapter reads as a summary of things already understood, and takes a fraction of the time. What is lost by skipping it entirely is real, however, and specifically examinable: the applicability criteria determine which entities fall into which category and therefore which standards apply and with what exemptions, and questions asking a candidate to classify an entity and state the consequences are pure marks for anyone who has read the criteria once. The recommendation is therefore to defer the chapter, not to drop it, and to read it at the point where it costs an hour rather than a week.

Question 7

Explain why the company chapters — financial statements of companies, buyback, amalgamation, internal reconstruction and branch accounting — should be prepared as a block and drilled to automaticity, and why concepts and formats need different revision regimes.

These chapters are not standards work. They are format work, and their questions are long: an amalgamation question supplies two balance sheets and a scheme and asks for the purchase consideration, the closing entries in the transferor's books, the opening entries in the transferee's, and a resulting balance sheet. A candidate who must recall what step comes next after each step will not finish within the time the marks justify; a candidate for whom the sequence is automatic spends the whole allocation on the figures, which is where the actual difficulty sits. Preparing them as a block helps because they share formats and reinforce each other — amalgamation and internal reconstruction in particular are close cousins, both turning on the reconstruction of a capital position, and are far easier learned adjacent than months apart. The two revision regimes differ because the two kinds of knowledge decay differently. Concepts survive on understanding and can be refreshed by reading. Formats survive only on repetition and decay fast, so they need to be rewritten from blank paper rather than reread — a weekly half-hour of writing skeletons is worth more in the final month than another pass through the standards.

Question 8

A candidate reports that the material feels familiar on reading but that they cannot start questions in a mock test. Diagnose the failure precisely and prescribe the correction, including the ratio of activities that should replace their current routine.

The failure is recognition without recall. Reading produces a feeling of familiarity that the mind readily mistakes for competence, because recognising material when it is placed in front of you is genuinely easier than producing it from a blank page, and nothing in a reading routine ever tests the harder skill. The candidate's preparation has trained the wrong capacity, and the deficit is invisible until an examination supplies the blank page. The correction is to change the ratio of activities rather than the quantity: reading hours and problem-working hours should be roughly equal and must never fall below one to one, with the problem worked in the same sitting as the reading rather than deferred, so that the rule is converted into a procedure while it is still fresh. Two further specifics matter. Work full questions under time from the start rather than saving them for the last month, because a sixteen-mark question worked in twenty-eight minutes teaches what is actually examined and the same question worked in an hour does not. And write formats from blank paper rather than rereading them, since it is precisely the from-blank-paper skill that has been left untrained.
