The entire village came together to build a new path — smooth and wide enough for a wheelchair. Men dug and laid stones, women brought food and tea, and children cheered Chuskit on. The community effort made it possible for Chuskit to go to school for the first time.

Imagine you are Chuskit watching other children go to school while you stay at home. How would you feel?

If I were Chuskit, I would feel very sad, lonely, and left out. I would desperately want to join the other children — to learn, play, and make friends. Watching them go every day while I couldn't would make me feel like I was missing out on a big part of life. I would wish someone would help make the path accessible.

What can your school do to be more friendly for children who use wheelchairs?

Accepted Answer

My school can: (1) build ramps at all entrances — not just stairs, (2) make sure doors are wide enough for a wheelchair, (3) have an accessible toilet on the ground floor, (4) ensure classrooms and important areas are on the ground floor or have a lift. These changes make the school welcoming for EVERY child.

The villagers built a path for Chuskit. But what 'paths' do we need to build in our minds and hearts to truly include differently-abled people?

We need to build 'paths' in our minds and hearts by: (1) stopping the habit of staring at or avoiding people with disabilities — treat them as equals, (2) not using words like 'disabled' or 'handicapped' as insults — words hurt, (3) inviting differently-abled children to play, sit together, and be friends — inclusion starts with friendship, (4) understanding that disability is not inability — people with disabilities have the same dreams, talents, and right to education and work as everyone else. The physical path got Chuskit to school — but it's the attitude of acceptance that will keep her there.
