Passage: 'On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa mountaineer, became the first climbers confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,849 metres. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt, which had spent weeks establishing a chain of camps up the mountain's southern route through Nepal. Hillary and Tenzing set out from their final camp before dawn and reached the summit shortly before noon. They stayed only about fifteen minutes, taking photographs and leaving small offerings in the snow before beginning the descent, since the northern route through Tibet was closed to them and the weather could turn quickly.
