Ravi buys a pen for Rs 18.50, a notebook for Rs 35.75 and an eraser for Rs 5.00, then pays with Rs 100. Find the bill and the change.

A classmate adds Rs 25.75 and Rs 18.50 by writing 25 + 75 + 18 + 50 = 168. Explain what went wrong and give the correct answer.

The dot separates two different units. Everything before it is rupees and everything after it is paise, so they cannot be run together into one number. Add paise to paise: 75 + 50 = 125, write 25 and carry a rupee. Add rupees to rupees: 25 + 18 + 1 = 44. The answer is Rs 44.25.
