Question 1

Write 2:05 and 6:50 in words.

Accepted Answer

2:05 is five minutes past two. 6:50 is ten minutes to seven, because once past the half hour it is clearer to count towards the next hour.

Question 2

Write quarter to seven in figures, and say how many minutes are in a quarter of an hour.

Accepted Answer

6:45. A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes, since an hour has 60.

Question 3

How many days has September, and how many has August?

Accepted Answer

September has 30 days and August has 31. On the knuckle trick, September falls in a gap and August on a knuckle.

Question 4

The long hand is at 7 and the short hand is just past 8. What is the time, given two ways?

Accepted Answer

Each clock number is worth five minutes, so the long hand at 7 means 35 minutes. The time is 8:35, which is also 25 minutes to 9.

Question 5

How many days does February have in a leap year, and how often does a leap year come?

Accepted Answer

29 days. A leap year comes once every four years and has 366 days in total.

Question 6

Is 7 AM before or after the school assembly? Is 7 PM before or after dinner?

Accepted Answer

7 AM is early morning, before assembly. 7 PM is evening, after dinner has begun or around it. The clock face looks identical for both, which is exactly why AM and PM are needed.

Question 7

How many days are there from April 10 to April 25?

Accepted Answer

Both dates are in the same month, so subtract: 25 - 10 = 15 days.

Question 8

If June 3 is a Wednesday, what day is June 17?

Accepted Answer

The same weekday returns every 7 days. June 10 is a Wednesday and June 17 is a Wednesday as well.

Question 9

A classmate reads 9:50 as fifty minutes past nine and says there is plenty of time before ten o'clock. What is wrong with this?

Accepted Answer

9:50 is only 10 minutes before 10 o'clock, not shortly after 9. Once the minute hand passes 30 it is clearer to count towards the next hour, so 9:50 should be read as ten minutes to ten.

Question 10

Using the knuckle trick, list the months with 31 days and explain which month it does not settle.

Accepted Answer

January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days; they fall on knuckles. April, June, September and November fall in the gaps and have 30. The trick does not settle February, which has 28 days normally and 29 in a leap year.
