Multi-alignment is a response to that position rather than an aversion to commitment.

Stabilising mechanisms exist and matter: border management agreements and military-level talks have contained incidents, and both states share interests in some multilateral forums.

The realistic assessment is that the relationship is best characterised as managed competition rather than as a problem admitting resolution — the objective is preventing escalation and reducing dependence in critical sectors, not achieving a settlement that the structural features make unlikely.

What sustains the India-US relationship, and what frictions persist within it?

And regional instability, in West Asia and elsewhere, directly affects India's energy supplies and diaspora populations.

The opportunities are equally real. A more distributed order increases the value of states that can engage across divides, which is precisely India's position — its presence in forums that exclude one another is an asset when channels between blocs narrow. Supply-chain diversification away from single-country concentration creates an opening for manufacturing relocation that India is positioned to compete for. The weakening of existing institutions strengthens the case for reforming them, which is India's standing objective.
