**Traits vary independently.** Skin colour, hair form, blood group frequency and stature do not covary in packages — a population dark in skin may share hair form with a light-skinned population and blood group frequencies with a third. If the traits do not travel together, there are no packages to name.

**Variation is clinal.** Traits vary **gradually across geographical space** rather than changing abruptly at boundaries, so any boundary drawn is arbitrary — and different traits produce clines running in different directions.

**Populations are not discrete.** Gene flow between adjacent populations has been continuous throughout human history, so there are no isolated breeding populations of the kind the concept assumes.

**The genetic evidence, which is decisive.**

**Variation within so-called racial groups substantially exceeds variation between them.** The large majority of human genetic variation is found within any single population, and only a small proportion distinguishes populations from one another. This means two individuals from the same conventional racial category may differ genetically more than two from different categories — which makes the category useless as a predictor.
