**Sacred performances** — the rituals, festivals, pilgrimages, offerings and observances conducted, together with their calendar and the rules governing who may perform what.

**Sacred specialists** — the priests and functionaries who conduct the performances, whose recruitment, internal ranking, hereditary rights over particular functions and relationships with pilgrims are themselves social facts requiring analysis.

**Its methodological significance** is the reason it matters. It supplied a **framework for studying complex civilisational settings** rather than small isolated communities, at a time when Indian anthropology needed one. And it demonstrated the interaction of **great and little traditions** within a single site — showing how local deities and practices are **universalised** into the wider tradition and how pan-Indian elements are **parochialised** into local form.

The companion concept, the **nature-man-spirit complex**, applies the same integrative logic to tribal life, holding that environment, community and spirit world constitute one system.

**Why the village was chosen.** The colonial administrative account, taken up in nationalist thought, presented the Indian village as a **self-sufficient, unchanging, autonomous** unit — the little republic formulation. **What the studies found**, and the finding dismantled the image.

**Srinivas** in Rampura, **S. C. Dube** in Shamirpet, **Oscar Lewis** in Rani Khera, **McKim Marriott** in Kishan Garhi and **Beteille** in Sripuram together established that villages were **neither isolated nor static**.

The **jajmani** system of hereditary service relations **connected** settlements rather than sealing them, since service castes served families across villages. **Caste groups had regional rather than village-bounded existence**, because marriage networks necessarily extended across villages under village exogamy. **Dominant castes** exercised power derived from landholding and numerical strength rather than from ritual rank alone. **Mobility** occurred through sanskritisation. And market, administrative and ritual ties extended beyond the boundary throughout.

**Dumont's critique** is analytical rather than empirical and is the stronger objection: the village is a **geographical and administrative** fact but not a **sociological unit**, because the units that actually structure social relations — **caste and kinship** — are organised **regionally** and cut across villages. Treating the village as the unit of analysis was therefore a methodological inheritance from administrative convenience, and it produced findings shaped by the boundary chosen rather than by social reality.

**What the studies nonetheless achieved**, which is the answer's balancing half.

They established **fieldwork** as Indian anthropology's method, replacing the textual and administrative-survey traditions.

They produced the discipline's most durable Indian **concepts** — sanskritisation, westernisation, dominant caste, and the great and little traditions — none of which could have emerged from textual study.

This is what makes it an **explanation** rather than a description.

Two further claims give the theory its distinctive content.

**Hierarchy is encompassment, not ranking.** The superior term does not merely rank above the inferior but **encompasses** it: the Brahmin represents the whole of society while the Kshatriya represents only the part that is power. Hierarchy in Dumont's sense is a relation of whole to part, which is why he insists it is misdescribed as a scale.

**Status encompasses power.** The priestly function is superior to the kingly, so in India — uniquely, on his account — the religious principle **subordinates** the political. From this he derives that Indian society is characterised by **holism**, in which the individual as a value is absent, in contrast to the individualism of the modern West.

**The empirical critique**, which is severe.

**Power and status do not behave as the model requires.** **Srinivas's dominant caste** is the decisive counter-example: dominance rests on **numerical strength, substantial landholding and a reasonably high ritual position** together, and numerically strong landowning castes of **middling** ritual rank routinely dominated Brahmins in local settings. If status genuinely encompassed power, this pattern would be exceptional; it is instead the norm.

**Beteille's** Sripuram material makes the same point systematically, showing ritual status, economic class and political power as **separable dimensions** that historically coincided and are progressively separating.

**The methodological critique**, which is more fundamental.

Dumont derives the ideology from **textual sources** and treats it as the society's structuring principle. The objection, pressed by **Berreman** and others, is that this **reproduces a Brahminical view of caste as the view of caste**: the subordinated do not necessarily share the ideology attributed to the system as a whole, and an account of a hierarchy taken from the accounts of those at its top is methodologically suspect however elegant.

The evidence supports the objection: studies of low-caste communities find accounts of the caste order that differ substantially from the textual ideology, frequently disputing the ranking and its justification rather than accepting them.

**Gupta's alternative** presses this furthest. **Dipankar Gupta** argues that there is **no single consensual hierarchy at all**: caste consists of **discrete competing identities**, and each caste holds its own account of the order in which it ranks higher than others place it. On this reading Dumont's unified hierarchy is an **artefact** of taking one group's account as the system's, and what actually exists is a set of mutually inconsistent claims.

**The Marxist critique** objects that Dumont's ideological explanation **displaces the material basis** — control of land and appropriation of labour — treating as a system of ideas what is a system of exploitation.

**Ambedkar's** position is related and stronger. Caste is a **division of labourers, not of labour**; it is arranged as a **graded inequality** in which each stratum has one below it to whose position it clings, which prevents the subordinated from uniting and is why the system is defended by many of those it disadvantages. Its basis is **religious sanction**, so it cannot be reformed and must be **annihilated**. This shares Dumont's emphasis on the ideological dimension and draws the opposite political conclusion.

**What survives.**

Dumont's account is the **only one that seriously addresses caste's distinctiveness** — why it took this form rather than the form of any other stratification system — and the pure-impure opposition remains the most economical explanation of its ritual content.

He forced the discipline to take the **ideological dimension** seriously rather than reducing it to interest, which was a real correction to purely materialist accounts.

And the concept of **encompassment** is a genuine analytical contribution, whatever its application to caste.

**Verdict.** As an account of caste's **ideology** the theory retains value; as an account of caste's **operation** it is refuted by the fieldwork tradition. The defensible position is that Dumont describes an ideological order that existed and was influential, and **mistakes it for the structure of the society** — and that a complete account requires his ideological question answered alongside Beteille's relational analysis and Ambedkar's account of graded inequality.

Examine the indigenous and exogenous processes of socio-cultural change in India.

**Indigenous processes**, arising within the tradition's own logic.

**Sanskritisation** — **Srinivas's** concept — is the process by which a lower caste or tribal group adopts the customs, ritual, ideology and lifestyle of a higher, usually twice-born caste in order to claim a higher position in the local hierarchy.

Three features define it. It is **positional change within an intact hierarchy** — the group moves and the structure does not, which is why Srinivas read it as evidence of caste's flexibility rather than of its erosion. It is typically **preceded by economic or political gain**, since sustaining an altered lifestyle requires resources and the claim requires backing. And the **reference model need not be Brahmin**: Kshatriya, Vaishya and Jat models operated in different regions, so the direction of aspiration follows the locally dominant group rather than the textually highest.

**Its limits, which are fundamental.** It takes the upper-caste model as the direction of aspiration, and therefore cannot accommodate mobility that **rejects** the hierarchy — the path of Dalit assertion, which seeks not a higher rank within the order but its rejection. It describes group mobility while the structure persists and offers no account of structural transformation.

**The great and little traditions** — **Redfield** and **Marriott** — distinguish the pan-Indian textual tradition from the local one and identify two connecting processes. **Universalisation** carries a local element upward into the wider tradition, so a village deity acquires a pan-Indian identity. **Parochialisation** brings a pan-Indian element down into local form, so a textual festival acquires local content and local deities. The framework's value is that it explains the observed **continuity** between elite and folk practice rather than treating them as separate systems, and it supplies the analysis of pilgrimage centres and of the sacred complex.

**Exogenous processes**, arising from contact.

**Westernisation** — also Srinivas's — is change resulting from contact with British rule: technology, institutions, dress, education, ideology, values, and the legal and administrative apparatus.

**The crucial observation** is that sanskritisation and westernisation are **distinct and frequently operate simultaneously in opposite directions**. A group may westernise in occupation, education and dress while **sanskritising** in ritual practice and dietary restriction — adopting Western professional life and simultaneously adopting vegetarianism and Brahminical ritual to support a status claim. Treating them as stages of one process is the standard error.

**Modernisation** is the broader institutional and attitudinal change associated with industrialisation, urbanisation, expanded education and market integration.

**Yogendra Singh's framework** is the most useful analytical tool and should be given. He distinguishes **orthogenetic** change, arising from within a tradition's own logic, from **heterogenetic** change, arising from contact with an external tradition; and **structural** change, in institutions, roles and organisational forms, from **cultural** change, in values and beliefs.

Applied to India, colonial contact produced heterogenetic change that was substantially **structural first**, with cultural change lagging — producing the characteristic pattern in which **modern structures were adopted and operated on traditional principles**: bureaucratic offices filled through caste and kin networks, modern parties mobilising on ascriptive lines, formally universalistic institutions operating particularistically.

**Other processes.** **Panchayati raj** created a formal local authority alongside the informal dominant-caste one, with reservation of office for previously excluded groups — and the anthropological question is whether it changes **decisions** or only **composition**, with the finding that measured effects strengthen over successive terms, suggesting proxy representation is transitional. **Media** extends information and consumption norms beyond the local, altering aspiration, marriage preference and political awareness. **Migration** and **globalisation** integrate local economies and expose them to distant markets and returns.

**Assessment.** The Indian pattern is neither the replacement of tradition by modernity nor its persistence unchanged, but **selective adaptation**: modern structures were adopted where they served existing interests and were operated according to principles that preserved those interests, while cultural change proceeded where compatible and stalled where not. That formulation retains Singh's descriptive power without the teleology his framework can imply, and it explains the specific pattern of what changed and what did not — which a simple lag account, predicting uniform delay, cannot.

Question 6

Examine the definitional problem of tribe in India and the characteristics of tribal populations.

**The definitional problem must be stated first**, because the category is genuinely unstable and every subsequent question presupposes it.

**The conventional criteria** — geographical isolation, distinct language, animistic religion, subsistence economy, absence of internal hierarchy, egalitarian social organisation, common territory, and a sense of common identity — **fit few actual communities**.

Most Scheduled Tribes have **long histories of interaction** with agrarian society through trade, tribute, labour and intermarriage. Many practise **settled agriculture** rather than shifting cultivation or foraging. Religious practice is frequently **syncretic**, incorporating Hindu deities and observances. Several tribal groups have internal ranking, and several speak languages of the dominant regional family.

**The administrative category** is defined by **inclusion in a Presidential order** rather than by sociological criteria, and the criteria used administratively — primitive traits, distinctive culture, geographical isolation, shyness of contact, backwardness — are widely criticised as **colonial in origin** and as describing a relationship to the state rather than a property of the community.

**Beteille's position** is the defensible one: tribe and caste are points on a **continuum of relations with the wider agrarian society** rather than distinct types. Many groups classified as tribes have been progressively incorporated — adopting Hindu deities and practices, acquiring occupational specialisation, and being assigned a rank — which is the **tribe-caste continuum** and the **Sanskritisation of tribes**. The distinction is therefore historical and political rather than essential, and its practical importance is that it determines constitutional status and entitlement.

**Distribution and its explanation.**

Tribal populations concentrate in the **central Indian belt** across the forested hilly districts of the peninsular shield; the **north-east**, where they constitute majorities in several states with distinct political histories and Sixth Schedule provisions; a **western belt**; and **southern hill regions**, with island communities including groups classified as particularly vulnerable.

**The distribution's explanation is geographical**: these are areas of hilly forested terrain on old crystalline rock, unsuited to intensive plough agriculture, which is why they escaped clearance and dense agrarian settlement and why tribal communities occupied them. **The same terrain holds the mineral wealth**, because the shield's Archaean and Proterozoic rocks host it — so the **mineral belt, the forest belt and the tribal belt substantially coincide**. That coincidence is the foundation of every problem examined in the next chapter, and stating it here is what makes the distribution analytical rather than descriptive.

**Biogenetic variability.** Tribal populations show distinctive frequencies of genetic markers, including blood group systems and haemoglobin variants. The **sickle cell** allele reaches appreciable frequencies in several central Indian tribal populations, consistent with the historical distribution of **malaria** in forested tracts — which is **balanced polymorphism** demonstrated in Indian material and connects directly to the biological half of Paper I. The general finding is that variation is **clinal and locally patterned** rather than corresponding to the administrative category, which is further evidence that the category is administrative rather than biological.

**Linguistic characteristics.** Tribal languages belong to several distinct families, and the distribution of language families does **not coincide** with the administrative category — several tribal groups speak languages of the dominant regional family, while others speak languages of families found almost exclusively among tribal populations. Many tribal languages lack written traditions and are under pressure from regional languages in education and administration.

**Socio-economic characteristics.** Subsistence ranges from **hunting and gathering** through **shifting cultivation** and **pastoralism** to **settled agriculture** and **wage labour** — with the significant observation that most tribal populations now depend substantially on agriculture and wage work rather than on forest foraging, so accounts assuming forest dependence describe a minority.

**Community ownership or use rights** in land and forest characterise many groups, and this is the feature that colonial tenure law **failed to recognise** — because it recognised individual title and treated commonly used land as unowned, which is the legal mechanism of dispossession.

**Gender stratification** is frequently less rigid than in adjacent caste society, with greater female participation in production and in some groups greater freedom in marriage choice — though the difference should not be overstated and varies enormously.

**Youth dormitories** and age organisation in several groups, and **village councils** exercising local authority.

**Assessment.** The category tribe describes a **relationship to the state and to the wider society** — administrative recognition, and a history of relative autonomy followed by incorporation — better than it describes a set of shared cultural or biological characteristics. That is why the definitional problem cannot be resolved by better criteria, and why the honest position is to state it and proceed.

Question 7

Examine the traditional Indian social system and its contemporary significance.

The classical framework must be examined as a **normative scheme** rather than as a description of practice, and the distinction between the two is where most of the analysis lies.

**Varnashrama dharma** combines two schemes.

**Varna** is the fourfold order of the classical texts — a scheme of ranked functional categories, pan-Indian, textual, and constant. **Ashrama** is the fourfold division of the individual life course: **brahmacharya**, the student stage of learning and discipline; **grihastha**, the householder stage of production, reproduction and the support of the other three; **vanaprastha**, gradual withdrawal from worldly involvement; and **sannyasa**, renunciation.

**The ashrama scheme's analytical interest** is that it distributes potentially **conflicting values** — worldly obligation and renunciation — across a **temporal sequence** rather than requiring a choice between them. Every man is to be a householder and then a renouncer, so the tradition accommodates the renouncer without disrupting the householder order that supports him. **Dumont** made this the basis of his account of the **renouncer** as the one genuine individual in a holistic society — a person who steps outside the social order rather than occupying a position within it.

**Purushartha** specifies four legitimate goals: **dharma**, right conduct and duty; **artha**, material acquisition and worldly success; **kama**, pleasure and desire; and **moksha**, liberation.

The scheme is significant because it **legitimates artha and kama** rather than treating them as obstacles to be overcome — a considerably more accommodating arrangement than a purely renunciatory ethic — while subordinating them to dharma and treating moksha as the final end. The ordering matters: pursuit of wealth and pleasure is legitimate **within** dharma and illegitimate outside it.

**Karma, rina and rebirth.** **Karma** holds that action produces consequences determining future conditions; **samsara** is the cycle of rebirth; **moksha** release from it. **Rina** is the concept of **debt** — to the sages, discharged by study; to the ancestors, by procreation; and to the gods, by ritual — which supplies a **positive obligation** to the householder stage rather than treating it as a concession to necessity.

**The sociological analysis**, which is what an anthropological answer must add and where most scripts stop short.

**The karma doctrine legitimates the existing order.** Present position is explained by past action, so inequality is converted into **desert**. This is the standard critique and it is well founded.

**The counter-observation** is that the doctrine simultaneously supplies a **route to mobility** within the ritual scheme, since present action determines future condition — and groups have historically used this to justify status claims, which is part of what **sanskritisation** consists of. The doctrine is therefore not purely conservative in its effects.

**Ambedkar's rejection** is the sharpest critique and should be given. He held that the karma doctrine, combined with **graded inequality**, makes the subordinated **complicit in their own subordination** — each stratum accepting its position as deserved and clinging to the one below it — which is why he regarded the **religious sanction** rather than the economics as the thing to be attacked, and why he concluded that caste could not be reformed but must be annihilated.

**The gap between norm and practice**, which is the anthropological contribution. Fieldwork established repeatedly that the textual scheme describes **prescription rather than behaviour**: the ashrama sequence was followed by very few; occupational specialisation was never as complete as varna implies; and local **jati** ranking bore an uncertain and disputed relationship to the varna categories. **Srinivas's** distinction between the **book view and the field view** names precisely this, and it is the methodological argument against the Indological approach.

**Contemporary significance.**

**As legitimating ideology**, the framework's force has weakened substantially — the open defence of hierarchy on karmic grounds has become publicly untenable, though the assumptions persist in less explicit forms.

**As a language of claim**, it persists: groups continue to use varna categories to assert status, and the scheme remains available as a vocabulary even where its authority is disputed.

**As a source of values**, the purushartha scheme's legitimation of worldly success and pleasure alongside duty is frequently invoked, and its ordering — that acquisition is legitimate within dharma — is the framework within which questions of business ethics and public conduct are sometimes discussed.

**In its critique**, the framework remains politically live: the **Ambedkarite** rejection is the intellectual foundation of Dalit politics, and the argument about whether the tradition can be reformed or must be repudiated is unresolved and consequential.

**Assessment.** The traditional system should be presented as a **normative framework of considerable internal coherence** which described practice imperfectly at every period, which served to legitimate an unequal order, and which simultaneously contained resources — the purushartha scheme's accommodation of worldly goals, the karma doctrine's implication that action changes condition, the renouncer's position outside the order — that have been used to contest it. Presenting it as either a description of how Indian society worked or as simply an ideology of oppression misses both its coherence and its contested character.

Question 8

Examine the palaeo-anthropological and prehistoric evidence from India.

**The general characterisation first**: India has an **extensive Palaeolithic lithic record** and a **very sparse hominin fossil record**. This is a preservation and recovery problem — acidic soils, monsoonal weathering, and the absence of the volcanic deposits that date and preserve the East African record — rather than evidence of absent or late occupation. Indian prehistory is therefore reconstructed principally from **stone tools and faunal associations** rather than from skeletal remains.

**Palaeo-anthropological evidence.**

**The Siwaliks** — the sub-Himalayan belt of Miocene and later deposits — have yielded an extensive **fossil primate fauna**, including forms that figured prominently in debates about hominid origins.

**Ramapithecus** was for a considerable period interpreted as an early **hominid ancestor**, on the basis of dental and jaw characteristics: reduced canines, thick molar enamel, and a dental arcade tending toward parabolic rather than U-shaped. Since these are exactly the features distinguishing hominids from apes, the interpretation was reasonable on the material available.

**The revision is the examinable point.** More complete facial and cranial material, together with molecular evidence on divergence times, indicated a relationship to the **orangutan** lineage rather than to hominids, and the genus was reassigned. The episode illustrates a general caution about the fossil record: **fragmentary dental evidence supported an interpretation that fuller material overturned**, and the features taken as diagnostic proved to be convergent adaptations to diet rather than markers of ancestry. It also illustrates how molecular evidence has been used to constrain interpretations of morphology.

**The Narmada** basin yielded a hominin **cranial fragment** — a partial calvaria — with a substantial cranial capacity, thick cranial bones and archaic features, associated with **Acheulian** tools. Its attribution has been debated between archaic **Homo sapiens**, late **Homo erectus**, and an intermediate form, and the debate is unresolved. Its significance is that it is among the **very few hominin fossils** from the subcontinent, in a region with abundant lithic evidence of occupation.

**The prehistoric sequence.**

**Lower Palaeolithic** shows two broad traditions: the **Soanian**, in the north-western sub-Himalayan zone, characterised by pebble tools, choppers and chopping tools on river gravels; and the **Acheulian** or Madrasian tradition across the peninsula, characterised by **handaxes and cleavers** made by bifacial flaking. The distinction between the two has been debated as cultural, functional or raw-material determined.

**Middle Palaeolithic** shows a shift to **flake tools** made on prepared cores, with scrapers, points and borers, and reduced tool size.

**Upper Palaeolithic** shows **blade and burin** industries, bone tools, and the earliest evidence of art.

**Mesolithic** is characterised by **microliths** — small geometric tools hafted into composite implements — a broadened subsistence base including fishing and fowling, the beginnings of animal management, and the **rock shelter art** of central India, which is among the richest such records anywhere.

**Neolithic** appears in several **regional traditions** with distinct crop and animal assemblages: a north-western tradition, a southern tradition characterised by **ash mounds** whose interpretation as cattle-pen burning is the standard reading, an eastern tradition, and a north-eastern tradition. The regional distinctness is itself the finding: it indicates that the transition to food production was **not a single diffusion** but occurred in several centres with local domesticates and independent trajectories.

**Ethno-archaeology in India**, which is a syllabus item in its own right.

Its method is to study **contemporary communities** in order to interpret archaeological remains — observing how living groups make and use tools, dispose of refuse, organise settlement space, build and abandon dwellings, and treat the dead, and then using the observed **relationship between behaviour and its material trace** to interpret traces alone.

Indian applications include studies of communities still using stone tools, of hunting and gathering groups, of potters whose production and distribution can be traced, and of pastoralists whose camp sites and abandonment patterns illuminate the interpretation of ephemeral archaeological occupation.

**Its methodological caution** must be stated: contemporary groups are **not living fossils**. They have their own histories, are embedded in modern economies, and have been shaped by contact and by the state. The valid inference is therefore from the **relationship between a behaviour and its material trace** — that a particular knapping technique leaves a particular debris signature — and not from the assumption that a present group resembles a past one. Ethno-archaeology generates **interpretive analogies to be tested**, not conclusions about the past.

**Assessment.** The Indian record's distinctive feature is the **mismatch between rich lithic evidence and sparse skeletal evidence**, which constrains what can be known: occupation from the Lower Palaeolithic is well established, and the identity of the occupants largely is not. **Buddhism and Jainism.**

**The sociological significance** is that both arose as **challenges to the ritual and hierarchical order**. They rejected sacrificial ritual and the authority of the priestly class, and offered **liberation independent of birth** — which is the feature that matters, since it denies the premise on which varna ranking rests.

**Institutional consequences**: the **monastic order** as an organisational form recruiting across birth categories; the patronage relationships between monastic institutions and mercantile and royal groups, which is why the traditions flourished where trade and urbanisation did; and the development of institutions of learning.

**Their absorption** is equally significant: elements of practice, ethical emphasis and iconography were incorporated into the wider tradition, and the institutional presence declined without the influence disappearing.

**Ambedkar's** conversion is the contemporary point: he found in Buddhism a resource the Brahminical tradition could not supply — a tradition with an Indian genealogy that denied birth-based ranking — and the conversion was a political act following from his analysis that caste's basis is religious sanction.

**Islam.**

**The negative evidence is the anthropologically significant part**: the **absence of monumental royal architecture**, of grand tombs, of unambiguous depictions of rulers, and of clear military iconography or fortification designed for defence against organised armies. Contemporary civilisations elsewhere produced all of these abundantly.

It has **changed form**, and the question feels difficult only because caste has weakened sharply on some dimensions while strengthening on others — so a single verdict is necessarily wrong. The productive approach separates the dimensions.

**Where caste has genuinely weakened.**

**Ritual restrictions** on commensality, on physical proximity and on shared public space have eroded substantially, particularly in urban settings, in transport, in workplaces and in education. Practices that were enforced within living memory are now uncommon in public settings.

**The hereditary occupational link** has weakened for most occupations, since industrial and service employment is not caste-allocated, and the **jajmani** system of hereditary service relations has largely dissolved under monetisation, the availability of alternative employment, and the displacement of artisan products by manufactured goods.

**Formal legal disability** has been abolished, with untouchability constitutionally prohibited and criminally punishable.

**Where caste has persisted and transformed.**

**Verdict.** Caste has **weakened as a ritual order**, **persisted as a marriage and network order**, and **strengthened as a political category**.
