How to Write Geography Optional Answers — Practice

Question 1

Design a preparation scheme for the Paper II map question and justify it.

Accepted Answer

**Why it deserves a scheme.** The map question is worth as much as a long answer, is scored almost mechanically — a correctly located and correctly annotated item earns its marks and an omitted one earns none — and requires no analytical skill. It is therefore the highest-certainty block of marks in either paper, and it is forfeited annually by candidates who prepare everything else.

**Build by category, not by list.** Locations cluster naturally, and learning them in clusters means an unfamiliar item can often be placed by proximity to a known one. The categories: **physiographic** divisions and major ranges with their passes; **drainage** — the main rivers, their principal tributaries and confluences, and major dams and reservoirs; **climate and vegetation** belts; **soils**; **minerals and industry** — coalfields, iron ore belts, oilfields, refineries, steel plants, textile centres; **conservation** — national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, tiger and elephant reserves, wetlands of international importance; **transport** — major ports, canals, and the principal corridors; and **agricultural** regions and crop belts.

**Prepare an annotation, not just a position.** The marks are for the annotation as much as for the location. For each item hold **one line** stating what it is and why it matters — a national park's characteristic species or ecosystem, a port's hinterland or specialisation, a pass's connection, a dam's river and purpose. That line is the difference between a marked dot and a scored item.

**Practise on blank outlines.** Recognition on a labelled map is not location on a blank one. Two blank outlines a week, twenty items each, marked against an atlas, until placement is automatic.

**Sweep current relevance annually.** Locations that have been in the news — a newly notified reserve, a commissioned port or corridor, a site of a significant event — recur, and a short annual sweep of such locations is worth more than additional depth in categories already held.

**In the exam**: attempt it first, allocate twenty to twenty-five minutes, mark all items before annotating any, and annotate in the space provided rather than crowding the map.

Question 2

Rewrite this to meet the process standard: 'Meanders are bends in a river. They are formed by erosion on the outer bank and deposition on the inner bank. Over time they may become cut off and form ox-bow lakes.'

Accepted Answer

The original names the feature, states the outcome and reports the sequence. It contains no mechanism — nothing explains why erosion is on the outer bank, why the pattern is self-reinforcing, or what controls the scale.

**Rewrite.** 'Meandering develops where a channel has sufficient discharge and a bed and banks that permit lateral migration, and the mechanism is a **secondary circulation** superimposed on the downstream flow.

An initial deflection of the thalweg — from an obstruction, a bank irregularity, or the alternating deep pools and shallow riffles that develop in almost any alluvial channel — sends the fastest filament of flow toward one bank. Because the flow at the surface moves faster than at the bed, and because the water surface superelevates on the outer bank of a bend, a **helicoidal flow** is established: surface water moves outward across the channel, plunges at the outer bank, returns along the bed toward the inner bank, and rises there.

This circulation does two things simultaneously. At the **outer bank** the plunging flow undercuts the base, the bank fails by collapse, and a steep **river cliff** develops. Along the bed the returning current carries the eroded load toward the **inner bank**, where velocity is lowest and deposition builds a **point bar** of laterally accreting sediment.

The process is **self-reinforcing**: erosion on the outside increases the bend's curvature, which strengthens the secondary circulation, which increases erosion. Meander amplitude therefore grows until the bend becomes so pronounced that the **neck** between adjacent loops narrows. At high discharge the river breaches the neck, adopts the shorter and steeper course, and the abandoned loop is sealed by deposition at its ends — leaving an **ox-bow lake** that silts progressively into a meander scar.

The **controlling variables** are discharge, which sets the scale, since meander wavelength scales with channel width; bank material, since cohesive banks resist migration and non-cohesive ones permit it; gradient, since very steep channels do not meander; and sediment load. This is why meander wavelength is a predictable multiple of channel width across rivers of very different sizes — the same mechanism operating at different scales.'

**What changed:** a mechanism (helicoidal flow) explains the observed pattern, the self-reinforcement explains the development, the controlling variables explain the scale and the exceptions, and the outcome now follows from the process rather than being asserted alongside it.

Question 3

For a question on Weber's theory of industrial location, specify exactly what to draw, how to label it, and where it goes in the answer.

Accepted Answer

**What to draw: the locational triangle.** Two raw material sources at two vertices and the market at the third, with the location point inside. Show the three pulls as arrows toward each vertex, their lengths proportional to the weight-distance pull. Add the **isodapanes** — closed curves joining points of equal additional transport cost — as concentric rings around the point of minimum transport cost, and mark the **critical isodapane**, the one at which the transport cost penalty equals the labour cost saving at an alternative site.

**How to label.** Vertices as M1, M2 and C (consumption centre or market). The interior point as P, the point of minimum transport cost. Rings labelled with their transport cost increment. The critical isodapane labelled as such, with a cheap-labour location marked inside or outside it depending on the case you are illustrating. **Caption:** *Weber's locational triangle: the point of minimum transport cost, and the critical isodapane within which a labour cost saving justifies deviation.*

**Where it goes.** Immediately after the paragraph establishing the transport-cost minimisation principle and before the paragraph on the labour cost distortion — because that is the moment the reader needs to see how deviation is evaluated. The prose then refers to it directly: *the critical isodapane in the figure defines the limit within which the labour saving exceeds the transport penalty*.

**A second, optional diagram** is the **material index** relationship — a simple axis showing that where the index exceeds one, weight-losing raw materials pull the plant toward the material source, and where it is below one the plant is pulled toward the market. This can be a two-line sketch and is worth including because it makes the theory's central prediction visible.

**What not to do**: draw the triangle without isodapanes, which omits the mechanism for evaluating deviation and reduces the diagram to a picture of three points; or place either diagram at the end, where it illustrates an argument the reader has already completed.

Question 4

Demonstrate the assumptions-mechanism-application-critique structure on Von Thunen's model of agricultural location.

Accepted Answer

**Assumptions**, stated first because the critiques attack them. An **isolated state** with no external trade. A **single central market** to which all produce is sold. A **uniform plain** with equal fertility and no physical barriers. **Uniform transport** in all directions, with cost proportional to distance and weight. **Rational farmers** maximising profit with complete information. **One mode of transport** — in the original, cart.

**Mechanism.** The model turns on **economic rent** — the surplus a unit of land yields over the cost of production and transport. For any crop, rent per unit area is the market price less production cost less transport cost per unit distance, multiplied by yield. Because transport cost rises with distance, rent falls with distance from the market, and each crop has a **rent gradient** whose steepness depends on its bulk, weight and perishability relative to its value.

The crop that outbids others at a given distance occupies that land. Steep gradients — bulky, perishable, low-value-per-weight produce — outbid near the market and drop out quickly. Shallow gradients — light, durable, high-value produce — persist to greater distances. The intersection of the gradients defines the boundaries, and since the plain is uniform, the boundaries are **concentric rings**.

**The predicted rings**: intensive market gardening and dairying nearest, then forestry for fuel and timber, then progressively less intensive arable rotations, then livestock ranching at the margin. Forestry's position is the model's most counter-intuitive prediction and the strongest evidence that it is a **rent** model rather than a common-sense ordering: timber was bulky and heavy relative to its value in the pre-industrial economy, so its gradient was steep.

**Modification within the model.** Von Thunen himself showed that a **navigable river**, offering cheaper transport, elongates the rings along its course; and that a **secondary market** creates its own smaller ring system. These are not exceptions but demonstrations that the mechanism is transport cost rather than distance as such.

**Application.** The model still explains **peri-urban land use** — market gardening, dairying and horticulture concentrating near cities — and the general gradient of intensity away from urban markets. In the Indian context it explains the concentration of vegetable and milk production around metropolitan areas and the persistence of cereals further out. Applied at the world scale, it explains why perishable produce is grown near consuming regions while grain moves globally.

**Critique**, taken from the assumptions in order. The **uniform plain** is nowhere realised, and soil and relief variation produce patterns that override the rent gradient. **Transport** is neither uniform nor proportional to distance: networks are linear, rates are stepped, and refrigeration has flattened the gradient for perishables decisively, which is why the innermost ring's logic has weakened most. The **single market** assumption fails in an economy with many markets and export outlets. **Government intervention** — procurement, price support, subsidy — alters relative returns and can invert the predicted order, which is a substantial factor in Indian cropping patterns. And farmers are not perfectly informed profit-maximisers, which is the behavioural critique that produced the later work on decision-making under uncertainty.

**Assessment.** The model's value is not predictive but **analytical**: it isolates one variable — transport cost relative to value — and shows what it alone would produce, so that departures from the pattern identify what other factors are operating. That is what an abstract model is for, and criticising it for unrealistic assumptions mistakes its purpose.

Question 5

Present the development of geographical thought as a sequence of reactions rather than a chronology.

Accepted Answer

Each approach arose from a defect in its predecessor, and presenting that logic rather than the dates is what distinguishes an analytical answer.

**Environmental determinism** held that physical environment controls human activity, society and even temperament. Its exponents — Ratzel, Semple, Huntington — produced a geography with a clear explanatory principle and a clear subject matter. **Its defect**: it could not explain why different societies in similar environments developed differently, and its extension to race and civilisation carried assumptions that were both unsupported and used to justify domination.

**Possibilism** was the reaction. Vidal de la Blache and Febvre argued that the environment offers a **range of possibilities** and that culture selects among them — nature is an adviser, not a dictator. The concept of *genre de vie*, the way of life expressing a group's accumulated adaptation, is its central contribution. **Its defect**: by making culture the determining factor it risked the opposite error, treating environment as a passive backdrop and offering no explanation of why particular possibilities are chosen.

**Probabilism**, developed by Spate, is the correction to both: some choices are more probable than others given the environment, so the relationship is one of differential likelihood rather than of determination or of free choice. **Stop-and-go determinism**, Griffith Taylor's formulation, makes the same point differently — society may choose the route and the pace, and the environment determines the destination.

**Regional geography and areal differentiation** dominated the middle period. Hartshorne defined geography as the study of areal differentiation — describing and explaining the variable character of the earth's surface from place to place. **Its defect**: it produced encyclopaedic descriptions of unique regions, generating no generalisations and no cumulative theory, and it was criticised as idiographic in a discipline claiming scientific status.

**The quantitative revolution** was the reaction to that defect. Schaefer's attack on exceptionalism argued that geography should seek **laws** like other sciences; the movement brought statistical method, model-building, hypothesis testing and locational analysis, and produced the discipline's theoretical core — central place theory, spatial interaction models, diffusion studies. **Its defects**: the abstraction of space from society, the assumption of rational economic actors, the neglect of what could not be measured, and — the criticism that proved decisive — the political sterility of a method that described patterns without asking who produced them or who suffered from them.

**Behavioural geography** attacked the rationality assumption. Decisions are made not in objective space but in **perceived space**, on incomplete information, by satisficers rather than optimisers. Mental maps, perception of hazard, and the difference between the real and the perceived environment are its subject matter. It corrects a specific defect of the quantitative programme without rejecting its method.

**Radical geography** attacked the political sterility. Harvey's *Social Justice and the City* is the turning point: spatial patterns are produced by social and economic structures, particularly by capital, and a geography that maps inequality without explaining its production is complicit in it. Marxist geography made the production of space, uneven development and the spatial fix its concerns.

**Humanistic geography** attacked the reduction of people to data points. Drawing on phenomenology, Tuan and Relph made **place** — as distinct from abstract space — the object: place as lived, meaningful and experienced, with concepts of topophilia, sense of place and placelessness.

**Welfare geography** asks the distributional question directly — who gets what, where, and why — bringing normative concern into a discipline that had claimed neutrality.

**Feminist and postmodern** approaches extend the critique: that the discipline's categories were formed without reference to gender, and that grand theory suppresses the local and the particular.

**The pattern to state in the conclusion.** The sequence oscillates between **nomothetic** ambition — seeking general laws, in determinism and in the quantitative revolution — and **idiographic** attention to the particular, in regional geography and in humanistic approaches. Each swing corrects a real defect and creates a new one, which is why the discipline is now methodologically plural rather than converged, and why the useful question is which approach suits which problem rather than which is correct.

Question 6

Show how the same topic — Indian agriculture — should be written differently in GS and in Geography Paper II.

Accepted Answer

**The GS answer** treats agriculture as a policy domain: cropping patterns, the constraints of small holdings and water stress, minimum support prices and procurement, the market reform debate, credit and insurance, and a way forward. It is accurate, national in scope, and organised around problems and interventions.

**The Geography optional answer** treats it as a **spatial phenomenon with physical and institutional controls**, and differs in four specific ways.

**It leads with the physical basis.** Cropping patterns are explained from the controls that produce them: rainfall amount, reliability and seasonality; temperature regime and growing period; soil type and depth; relief and drainage; and irrigation availability. Rice dominates where rainfall exceeds a threshold or assured irrigation exists; wheat dominates where the winter temperature regime suits it and irrigation is available; millets occupy the drier, thinner-soiled tracts because they tolerate what other cereals cannot. The pattern is a **response to physical controls modified by institutions**, not a policy outcome.

**It regionalises, and states the criteria.** The answer works through **agro-climatic zones** or **agro-ecological regions**, and — critically — states the **basis of the division**: agro-climatic zoning uses climate, soil and water resources together; agro-ecological regionalisation adds the length of the growing period. Naming regions without the criteria answers half the question.

**It is spatially specific.** Not *irrigation has expanded* but the distinction between the canal-irrigated northwestern plain, the tank-irrigated southern peninsula, the tube-well belt of the western Gangetic plain, and the largely rain-fed Deccan interior — each with its physical basis and its distinct problems. Not *the Green Revolution raised output* but that its technology required assured irrigation and therefore succeeded in specific regions, which is why it produced **regional differentiation** at national scale.

**It includes the analytical measures.** Cropping intensity, agricultural productivity, **crop combination** analysis and **crop diversification** indices, and land capability classification are the discipline's own instruments, and a Paper II answer should use them rather than describing agriculture without them.

**It carries a map.** A sketch showing crop regions, or the agro-climatic zones, or the irrigation types by region, does work that a paragraph cannot and is expected.

**The ecological consequence is treated geographically.** The Green Revolution's water-energy-cropping arrangement is explained as a **regional** phenomenon: free power set the marginal cost of extraction near zero in specific irrigated regions, water-intensive crops became viable there and were reinforced by assured procurement, and the water table fell in exactly those regions — so the ecological cost is spatially concentrated in the areas that benefited most.

**In one line:** GS explains what is being done about agriculture; Geography explains why agriculture is where it is, and what follows from that.

Question 7

List the diagrams a Geography candidate must be able to draw from memory, and state what each is for.

Accepted Answer

**Physical geography.**

**Plate boundary cross-sections** — divergent with a ridge and rift valley, convergent oceanic-continental with a trench and volcanic arc, convergent continental-continental with a fold belt, and transform. *For:* any question on tectonics, mountain building, vulcanicity or earthquake distribution.

**The geomorphic cycle** — a sequence of profiles showing youth, maturity and old age. *For:* Davisian cycle questions, and as the foil for Penck's and King's alternatives.

**A river long profile and a valley cross-section** at different stages. *For:* fluvial geomorphology and channel morphology.

**Global atmospheric circulation** — the three-cell model with pressure belts, surface winds and the ITCZ. *For:* any question on planetary winds, pressure belts or climate distribution.

**A frontal system cross-section and plan** — warm and cold fronts, the occlusion, cloud sequence and precipitation. *For:* temperate cyclones and fronto genesis.

**A tropical cyclone cross-section** — eye, eye wall, spiral bands, vertical circulation. *For:* tropical cyclones and coastal hazard.

**Ocean basin cross-section** — shelf, slope, rise, abyssal plain, trench, ridge. *For:* bottom topography of any ocean.

**Ocean current circulation** — the gyres with warm and cold currents distinguished. *For:* currents, and their climatic and biotic effects.

**A soil profile** with horizons labelled. *For:* pedogenesis and soil classification.

**An ecosystem energy flow and a nutrient cycle**. *For:* environmental geography and ecosystem questions.

**Human geography models — these are examined directly and must be exact.**

**Christaller's central place hexagons**, with the marketing, transport and administrative principles shown separately. *For:* central place theory, settlement hierarchy, rank-size questions.

**Losch's** modification with rotated nets producing city-rich and city-poor sectors. *For:* the comparison with Christaller.

**Von Thunen's rings**, plus the rent gradient graph that generates them. *For:* agricultural location. The gradient graph matters more than the rings, because it shows the mechanism.

**Heartland and Rimland** on a world outline. *For:* geopolitics.

**Paper II specific.**

**India outlines** with physiographic divisions, drainage basins, rainfall distribution, soil types, and agro-climatic zones. *For:* almost any Paper II question, and the base for the map question itself.

**The rule that makes this list manageable:** roughly twenty diagrams, each practised until it takes ninety seconds with full labelling. That is a fortnight's work and it improves every answer in both papers.

Question 8

You have prepared physical geography thoroughly and human geography superficially, with eight weeks left. Plan them.

Accepted Answer

**The diagnosis first.** This is the second most common Geography profile after the map-neglect one, and it caps scores for a structural reason: human geography is **half of Paper I** and supplies the theoretical apparatus that Paper II's economic, population, settlement and planning units also draw on. Weakness there therefore costs across roughly three-quarters of the optional, not one quarter.

**Weeks one and two — the models, done properly.** These are examined directly and are finite. Von Thunen, Weber, Christaller and Losch, Burgess, Hoyt and Harris-Ullman, the demographic transition, Malthus and its Marxian critique, Rostow, Perroux and Boudeville on growth poles, Mackinder and Spykman. For each, hold the **assumptions, the mechanism, the diagram drawn from memory, one application and the documented critiques**. That is roughly a dozen models at a page each, and it is the single highest-return fortnight available, because model questions are the most predictable in the paper and are answered badly by most candidates.

**Week three — schools and perspectives.** Determinism through possibilism and probabilism to regional geography, the quantitative revolution, and then behavioural, radical, humanistic and welfare approaches — as a **sequence of reactions**, each correcting a defect and creating a new one. Held this way it is one page, and it answers a reliably examined question that most scripts handle chronologically.

**Weeks four and five — economic, population and settlement geography.** These are content-heavy but conceptually straightforward, and they connect directly to Paper II, so preparing them serves both papers. Work them alongside the corresponding Paper II units rather than separately.

**Week six — regional planning.** Region concepts and methods of regionalisation, growth centres and growth poles, regional imbalance and development strategies. Under-prepared by most candidates and directly reusable in Paper II's planning unit.

**Weeks seven and eight — writing and maps.** Two full papers under timed conditions. Diagram drill until each of the twenty core diagrams takes ninety seconds with full labelling. And blank-outline map practice, which should have been running throughout and which is non-negotiable in the final fortnight.

**What to do with the physical geography strength:** nothing further. It is already adequate, additional depth there has low marginal return, and the hours are needed elsewhere. Maintain it with a single traversal of notes in week eight.

**The one adjustment to make throughout:** integrate the two halves. Physical strength improves human answers wherever the physical basis is relevant — agricultural regions, settlement patterns, resource distribution, hazard — and an answer that brings the physical control into a human question is doing something most scripts do not.
