Question 1

What is the History optional actually testing, and how does that differ from a narrative answer? (150 words)

Accepted Answer

**History as an academic subject is not the past.** It is an **argument about the past constructed from surviving evidence**, and that evidence is fragmentary, partial, and produced by particular people for particular purposes. A historian's work is simultaneously an account of what happened, a claim about what the evidence supports, and a position relative to other historians.

**The three things an examiner is looking for.**

**Evidence with its type named.** Not "the Harappan cities were planned" but "the **excavated** grid layout, standardised brick ratios and covered drainage indicate deliberate planning." The second tells the examiner the candidate distinguishes inference from assertion.

**The historiographical position.** Almost every substantial question on this syllabus carries a **named disagreement** — the Mauryan state, Indian feudalism, the eighteenth century, 1857, the origins of the Cold War. An answer that does not acknowledge it is a school essay.

**A defended position of your own** — not a survey of what everyone has said, which is the commonest failure among candidates who have read the historiography.

**The consequence**: a candidate who has read the whole syllabus and writes competent narrative scores moderately; one who has read less and writes about how we know and what is disputed scores better.

Question 2

Explain why the sources unit is not a preliminary chapter but the paper's permanent method.

Accepted Answer

The syllabus opens Paper I with **sources**, and the unit supplies the vocabulary the entire paper is written in — which is why it should be used in every answer rather than revised once.

**Archaeological evidence** — excavation, exploration, stratigraphy, dating methods. *Good for*: material life, settlement patterns, technology, diet, trade goods, the built environment. *Cannot supply*: names, motives, beliefs, the content of speech. **An archaeological culture is a recurring assemblage of material types, not a people**, and the inference from pot to population is precisely where archaeological argument is contested.

**Epigraphy** — inscriptions on stone, metal and rock. *Advantages*: contemporary, dated or datable, and intended to be public and permanent. *Limitation*: they record **what the issuing authority wanted recorded** — grants, victories, endowments, prescriptions — so they over-represent the state, the temple and the donor, and under-represent everyone else.

**Numismatics** — metal content, weight standard, legend, imagery, find spot. *Establishes*: dynastic sequence and territorial extent from distribution; economic conditions from purity and volume; political claims from titles and imagery; contact from imitation and hoard composition. *The classic inference*: debasement and declining volume indicate contraction — which is exactly the evidence disputed in the early medieval urban decline debate.

**Monuments, art and architecture** — read as evidence of resources commanded, technical knowledge, patronage and stylistic contact.

**Indigenous literary sources.** The essential critical move is to **locate the text**: when composed, when compiled into the form we have, by whom, for whom, and to what purpose. **A text prescribing social order is evidence for the prescription, not for the practice** — the single commonest error in writing on ancient Indian society.

**Foreign accounts** — Greek, Chinese and Arab. *Value*: they notice what insiders take for granted and occasionally supply chronology indigenous sources do not. *Limits*: many wrote at second hand or long after; they misunderstand institutions observed briefly; and their categories are their own. The Chinese pilgrims' accounts were written for a Buddhist purpose, so their picture of religious life is not a neutral survey.

**The operational rule for every other answer**: name the source type in a clause when making a claim. It costs four words and is visible to the examiner on every page.

Question 3

How should historiographical debate be used in an answer? Illustrate with the Mauryan state, Indian feudalism and the eighteenth century.

Accepted Answer

**The mistake to avoid first.** A paragraph saying historian A argued X, historian B argued Y, and the truth lies in between shows reading without thought and earns accordingly.

**What to do instead**: use the debate as the answer's **structure**. Identify what the disagreement is actually about — it is usually about **which evidence to privilege** or **what counts as an explanation** — then show how the evidence bears on it, then take a position.

**The Mauryan state.** The older reading, built largely on the **Arthashastra** together with the edicts, describes a **highly centralised bureaucratic empire** with uniform administration, extensive state control of the economy and an elaborate espionage apparatus.

The revision argues that this **overreads a normative text**: the Arthashastra prescribes what a state should do; it is generally dated later than the Mauryan period and composed over a long span; and it therefore cannot be used as a description of Mauryan practice. It argues further that the **distribution of the edicts** indicates a core of directly administered territory with peripheries where the relationship was different, and that the edicts' own references to frontier peoples indicate zones of influence rather than administration.

**The disagreement is therefore about the status of the Arthashastra as evidence** — and saying that is worth more than naming six historians.

**Indian feudalism.** The thesis holds that from about the middle of the first millennium, **land grants to brahmanas and religious institutions**, followed by grants to officials in lieu of salary, produced a decentralised order with a hierarchy of intermediaries, declining trade, declining towns, contracting coinage, and peasants tied to the land.

The critique disputes each element: that trade did not decline uniformly and the **coinage evidence is ambiguous**; that towns declined in some regions and not others; that the grants transferred **revenue rights rather than creating manorial estates**; and that the European term imports relations — vassalage, the manor, serfdom — that the Indian evidence does not show.

**The disagreement is about whether a European model applies, and about what the absence of coins actually proves** — the second being a general problem about arguing from negative evidence.

**The eighteenth century.** The older account is **decline**: Mughal collapse, fragmentation, disruption, and a vacuum into which the company moved.

The revision is **realignment**: the successor states of Bengal, Awadh and Hyderabad had functioning revenue systems and growing commercial economies; some regions prospered; and the change was a **redistribution** of political and economic power rather than a general collapse.

**The disagreement turns on regional evidence against an imperial-centred narrative**, and the defensible position is that both are partly right — the imperial centre did collapse, and the consequences varied enormously by region, so **a single verdict for the subcontinent is the wrong form of answer**. That formulation is itself the position, and it is better than choosing a side.

**The debates worth preparing in this form**: for Paper I, the Mauryan state, Indian feudalism, the nature of the Mughal state and its crisis, and the eighteenth century. For Paper II, the character of 1857, the drain and deindustrialisation, the national movement read from above against from below, and the origins of the Cold War.

Question 4

How should chronology and periodisation be handled in History answers?

Accepted Answer

**Dates are necessary and are not the answer.** What a strong answer does with chronology is **establish sequence where sequence carries a causal claim**.

If the argument is that the transfer of revenue rights preceded and enabled the growth of intermediary power, the sequence **is** the argument. If it is that the Khalji administrative measures were a response to the Mongol pressure, the sequence is the argument. If it is that industrialisation in Britain preceded and enabled the reordering of colonial trade, the same holds. **Where a date does no such work, it is decoration.**

**The practical rule**: regnal dates for major rulers; **century-level precision for processes**, since a process does not have a date; and exact dates only for events whose timing matters to the argument being made. A candidate who writes a paragraph of dates has demonstrated revision rather than understanding, and examiners read it that way.

**Periodisation is itself examinable and is itself an argument.**

The **ancient-medieval-modern** division was imported from European historiography and carries its assumptions — that there is a classical age, a middle age of decline, and a modern age of recovery — none of which fits the Indian evidence straightforwardly.

The older **Hindu-Muslim-British** periodisation is worse, because it makes **religion the organising fact of political history**, implies that rulers' religion determined the character of their states, and has served political purposes external to the discipline. It also breaks down immediately on inspection: it classifies the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals together across five centuries of very different arrangements, and it cannot accommodate the Deccan sultanates, Vijayanagara or the Marathas without contradiction.

**What follows for answers**: where a question invites it, say in a clause that the label is contested and why. A question on medieval India can note that the period label carries assumptions the evidence does not support, and then proceed. This costs one sentence and signals disciplinary awareness.

**The alternative periodisations** worth knowing are those built on **material and social criteria** — the transition to iron and settled agriculture, the second urbanisation, the age of land grants, the establishment of the Persianate state, the colonial transformation — because each is defined by a change the evidence can actually show, rather than by a dynasty or a religion.

**A caution**: do not turn every answer into a discussion of periodisation. It belongs where the question's own terms raise it, and nowhere else.

Question 5

How should the Paper I map question be prepared and answered?

Accepted Answer

**Why it matters disproportionately.** The map question is worth a substantial share of one paper's marks, is scored **almost mechanically** against a list of expected identifications and significances, and is **forfeited every year** by candidates who prepared everything else. It is the single highest-return item in the whole optional relative to preparation time.

**How to prepare it: by category, as each unit is covered**, rather than as a separate exercise at the end.

**Prehistoric and Harappan sites** — the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic locations, the rock art sites, and the Harappan settlements including the coastal and peripheral ones, since the peripheries are asked more often than the well-known cities.

**Mahajanapada capitals** and the early urban centres of the second urbanisation.

**Ashokan edict sites**, whose distribution is itself an argument about the empire's extent and administration.

**Buddhist and Jaina centres**, stupas, and monastic and educational sites.

**Ports and trade routes**, including the western coast ports named in classical accounts and the eastern ports connected to Southeast Asian trade.

**Cave and rock-cut sites**, by phase.

**Temple sites by dynasty and style**, which carry both a location and an architectural identification.

**Major battles**, with the parties and the consequence.

**What each entry needs**: the location, and **two or three lines of significance** — what was excavated there, what it demonstrates, what happened there, or what it belongs to stylistically. **The significance carries the marks**, not the placement alone, so an entry that says only where a site is has earned half of what was available.

**How to practise**: on a **blank outline**, placing sites from memory. Recognition of a marked location on a printed map is not the skill being tested; **placement** is, and the two are different abilities. Fifteen minutes weekly on a blank outline from the first month is sufficient, and it must start early, because the list is long and is learned by repetition rather than by understanding.

**On the day**: do the map question **first**, while you are fresh and before time pressure builds, because it is the most mechanically scored part of the paper and the easiest to lose to a shortage of minutes at the end.

**Beyond the map question**, sketches earn their space in a few places: a rough settlement plan for a Harappan site or a temple type; a simple labelled diagram of a stupa's elements; and an outline map where a question turns on **distribution** — the spread of megaliths, the edict sites, the extent of an empire at two dates. Draw only where the drawing **replaces** prose, never as decoration.

Question 6

Why is the world history half of Paper II under-prepared, and how should it be approached?

Accepted Answer

**The scale of the neglect and its cause.** Roughly **half of Paper II is world history**, from the Enlightenment to the disintegration of the Soviet Union — about a quarter of the optional's total marks. Candidates under-prepare it because they chose History partly for its **overlap with General Studies**, and that overlap covers Indian history almost entirely and world history barely at all. So the half of the paper with no external support gets the least attention.

**What is actually examined**: analytical rather than narrative questions — the causes of the French Revolution and the dispute about them; why industrialisation began where it did and what it did to living standards; the nature and explanations of nineteenth-century imperialism; the character of fascism; the causes of the world wars; the origins of the Cold War; decolonisation and its economic aftermath; and European integration.

**How to prepare it efficiently: as themes with debates attached**, not as a chronicle of Europe. Each of the following is one prepared page that answers several possible questions.

**The French Revolution's causes** carry the older social interpretation, which reads it as a bourgeois revolution against a feudal order, against the revisionist account, which disputes the class categories and emphasises political and fiscal crisis and contingency.

**Industrialisation** carries two debates: **why Britain first**, with explanations ranging over resources, institutions, agricultural change, colonial markets and technology; and the **standard of living** question, on whether workers' conditions improved or deteriorated in the early phase.

**Imperialism** carries the **economic** explanations — surplus capital, markets, raw materials — against the **strategic and political** ones — great-power rivalry, security of existing possessions, and the dynamics of the periphery drawing metropolitan powers in.

**Fascism** carries the question of whether it is best explained as a class response to crisis, as a form of mass politics, or as a phenomenon of the interwar conjuncture — and whether Italian fascism and German National Socialism are one phenomenon.

**The Cold War's origins** carry the orthodox account, which places responsibility on Soviet expansion; the revisionist account, which emphasises American economic and strategic objectives; and the post-revisionist account, which emphasises mutual misperception and the security dilemma in a bipolar structure.

**Decolonisation** carries the question of why it happened when it did — colonial nationalism, metropolitan exhaustion after the wars, and the changed international environment — and the debate about whether formal independence altered economic dependence.

**The connection to Indian history is examinable and worth making explicitly.** Colonial economic policy in India is unintelligible without industrialisation in Britain; the national movement drew on ideas whose origins lie in the Enlightenment and in nineteenth-century nationalism; and decolonisation and non-alignment place India in a comparative frame the syllabus itself invites. An answer that makes such a connection demonstrates command of both halves at once.

**The practical allocation**: world history deserves roughly the share of preparation time that it carries in marks, which is far more than most candidates give it — and because it is under-prepared generally, marginal effort here yields more than the same effort spent deepening Indian history already covered for General Studies.

Question 7

Set out the architecture of History answers and the discipline of writing about thin evidence.

Accepted Answer

**The 10-mark answer (150 words).** One line locating the question in time and place. Two or three short paragraphs, each carrying **one point with the evidence supporting it**. One line of assessment. No headings at this length.

**The 15-mark answer (250 words).** Framing that **states the issue or the disagreement**; a body organised by the question's own terms rather than by an imported template; evidence with its type named; the counter-position wherever the directive invites it; and a one-line assessment that takes a side.

**The 20-mark answer (250 to 300 words at the paper's realistic pace).** Framing; three or four substantive sections with visible structure; the historiographical debate handled **as structure rather than as a list**; evidence throughout; and an assessment taking a position with its reason.

**On introductions.** Do not open with a general statement about the period's importance — it says nothing and consumes the most valuable line on the page. Open with the **issue**: that the evidence for this question is of one particular kind; that the accepted account has been revised on a specific ground; that the sources disagree. One such sentence tells the examiner immediately that the answer is a historical argument.

**On conclusions.** Take a position and give the reason in the same sentence. "The period showed both continuity and change" is worth nothing. "The imperial centre collapsed while several regional economies expanded, so a single verdict for the subcontinent is the wrong form of answer" is worth its line, because it says something that could be false.

**On quotations.** Use them sparingly and only where the **phrasing itself carries the argument**. A misattributed or invented quotation is worse than none, and examiners in this subject notice — an invented citation converts an answer's other claims into ones the examiner will not trust.

**The discipline about thin evidence**, which is what separates a historian's answer from a confident one.

**Where the evidence is genuinely limited** — early Vedic political organisation, the reasons for the Harappan decline, the magnitude of any pre-modern economy, the social composition of participation in most pre-colonial events — **say so, and then reason within the limit**.

**Why this scores rather than costing marks**: the examiner knows exactly how thin the evidence is. An answer asserting a confident figure or a settled cause where the discipline has none reads as a candidate repeating a textbook. An answer that says the evidence supports a decline in the built environment and a shift in settlement pattern without supporting any single explanation for it, and then sets out which explanations the evidence bears on, reads as someone who understands what the discipline can and cannot establish.

**The general form**: state what the evidence supports, state what it does not reach, and take a position on the question actually answerable. **Overclaiming on thin evidence is penalised; reasoning within a stated limit is rewarded.**

Question 8

How should preparation for this optional be organised, and what should be avoided?

Accepted Answer

**The problem**: History has the **widest syllabus of any humanities optional**, from the Palaeolithic to the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the examined core is much smaller than the syllabus. The commonest failure is therefore **breadth without retention**.

**What to read.** For **Paper I**, one standard survey each for ancient and medieval India, read for **processes and debates** rather than for coverage, plus focused reading on the four prepared debates — the Mauryan state, Indian feudalism, the nature of the Mughal state and its crisis, and the eighteenth century. For **Paper II**, one standard survey of modern India and one of the national movement, plus a world history survey read **thematically** rather than chronologically.

**How to organise notes: by theme, not by chapter.** **State formation**, **agrarian relations**, **trade and urbanisation**, **religion**, **art and architecture**, and the **position of women** run across every period in Paper I, and a question is far more likely to ask you to trace one of them across periods than to describe a reign. Chapter-shaped notes cannot answer such a question without rewriting themselves in the hall.

**The map file** should be built in parallel from the first month, by category, with two or three lines of significance per entry — treated as a running task rather than a final one.

**The debate file** should hold each prepared disagreement in the form: what the older account claimed, what the revision claims, **what the disagreement is actually about**, and which reading the evidence better supports.

**What to avoid.**

**Accumulating multiple books on the same period**, which adds pages without adding examinable content, since the surveys agree on the substance and differ in emphasis.

**Reading historiography as a separate subject**, detached from the topics it argues about. Historiography learned as a list of schools and names is unusable; learned as a disagreement about specific evidence, it structures answers.

**Maintaining separate notes for the optional and for GS1** on the shared material. Keep **one** set holding the evidence and the debates — they are what the optional requires, and GS1 answers are improved rather than harmed by carrying them.

**Leaving world history until the end**, which is how it comes to be under-prepared. It should be running from the start at roughly the share of time its marks warrant.

**Answer practice**, which matters more than additional reading past a point. Practise **against the directive** — discuss, examine, critically examine, assess, comment and trace require different answers to the same topic, and a well-informed answer to a question that was not asked is this paper's commonest avoidable loss.

**On the day**: do the **map question first**; attempt every question, since both papers are fully attemptable and an omission is a certain zero against partial credit; and hold the time allocation by marks rather than by how much you happen to know.
