How to Write Sociology Optional Answers — Practice

Question 1

Convert this descriptive passage into a sociological answer: 'Joint families are declining in India. Nuclear families are becoming more common in cities due to migration, employment and housing costs. However, family ties remain strong and relatives continue to help each other.'

Accepted Answer

The passage is accurate and sociologically empty: it reports a trend, lists proximate causes, and adds a qualification, without naming a mechanism, a concept or a position.

Sociological version: 'The observed shift is better described as a change in **residential form** than as a decline of the joint family, and the distinction is the substance of the debate. **I. P. Desai** argued precisely this — that Indian families were frequently joint in *function* while nuclear in residence, since obligations of property, ritual and support persisted across separate households. On that reading, urban migration alters co-residence without dissolving the descent group, and the reported strength of ties is not a qualification to the trend but evidence that the wrong unit was being counted.

A structural-functionalist account, following **Parsons**, would explain the residential shift by the requirements of an industrial economy: geographical and occupational mobility demand a small, portable unit, and functions once performed by the kin group — production, education, care of the aged — are progressively transferred to specialised institutions. The **household dimension** literature qualifies this in the Indian case, showing that households pass through developmental cycles, so a snapshot showing nuclear households may be capturing a phase rather than a form.

A feminist reading, however, notes what both accounts leave unexamined: the persistence of **patriarchal control over property and marriage** across both residential forms, so a change in household composition need not alter the sexual division of labour or women's entitlements at all — which is why the nuclear household has not delivered the autonomy modernisation theory predicted.'

Same facts, three named positions, a mechanism in each, and a disagreement the answer takes a view on.

Question 2

Write a 10-mark compulsory-part answer, at about 150 words, on 'Sanskritisation'.

Accepted Answer

'Sanskritisation, a concept developed by **M. N. Srinivas** from his Coorg fieldwork, refers to the process by which a lower caste or tribal group adopts the customs, rituals, ideology and way of life of a higher, usually twice-born, caste in order to claim a higher position in the local hierarchy.

Three features define it. It is a mobility of **positional change rather than structural change** — the group moves within the hierarchy while the hierarchy itself remains intact, which is why Srinivas treated it as evidence of the caste system's flexibility rather than of its erosion. It is typically preceded by **economic or political gain**, since a claim to higher status requires resources to sustain the altered lifestyle. And it operates against a **reference group**, which need not be Brahmin: Srinivas himself noted Kshatriya, Vaishya and Jat models in different regions.

Critiques note that it privileges the upper-caste model as the direction of aspiration, understates conflict, and cannot account for mobility routes that reject the hierarchy altogether — the path taken by Dalit assertion, which seeks not a higher rank within the order but its rejection.'

About 175 words. Note the shape: attribution, three defining features each with a mechanism, and the standard critiques stated specifically rather than generically. That structure fits any 10-mark concept part.

Question 3

A candidate writes: 'Weber said that religion influences the economy. The Protestant ethic helped capitalism grow.' State exactly what is missing and rewrite.

Accepted Answer

What is missing: the direction and specificity of the causal claim, the mechanism, the methodological point about ideal types, and the fact that Weber's argument was framed against a specific opponent.

Rewrite: 'Weber's argument in *The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism* is not that religion influences the economy generally, but that a specific religious development had an unintended economic consequence. Calvinist predestination created acute anxiety about salvation, which could not be resolved through sacrament or works; the resolution that emerged in practice was to treat worldly success in a calling as a sign — not a cause — of election. This produced a distinctive orientation: methodical, disciplined labour combined with the ascetic refusal of consumption, and the arithmetic consequence of earning without spending is accumulation.

The claim is therefore about **elective affinity** rather than determination — Weber does not argue that Protestantism caused capitalism, but that a particular religious ethic and a particular economic spirit were mutually reinforcing. The methodological point is equally important: both the ethic and the spirit are constructed as **ideal types**, deliberate analytical exaggerations against which real cases are compared, not descriptions of any actual population.

The argument was framed against a materialist account in which ideas are superstructural, and Weber's own comparative studies of Chinese, Indian and ancient Judaic religion were designed to test whether the affinity held elsewhere — which is why treating him as an idealist mirror-image of Marx misreads a deliberately multi-causal position.'

That is what conceptual precision means in Paper I: the claim, the mechanism, the methodological status, and the opponent.

Question 4

Answer in the opposition register: 'Examine sociological theories of religion.' Set three positions against each other and reach a verdict.

Accepted Answer

Three positions, differing in what they take religion to *be* rather than merely in their evaluation of it.

**Durkheim** treats religion as social in its object. In *The Elementary Forms*, the sacred is not a supernatural realm but society itself, encountered in a form that commands reverence; the totem is the clan's emblem and worship of it is worship of the collective. The function is the production and periodic renewal of solidarity through collective ritual. The strength of this account is that it explains religion's universality and its concentration in collective occasions; its weakness is that it explains religion's persistence better than its content, and cannot easily account for religious change or for beliefs that divide a society rather than uniting it.

**Weber** treats religious ideas as causally significant in their own right. The concern is not what religion does for society but how religious world-views shape the conduct of believers — the Protestant ascetic orientation being his central case, with the comparative studies designed to show that different soteriologies produce different economic dispositions. This explains change and variation well, which Durkheim does not; it is weaker on why religion exists at all, since it takes belief systems as given inputs.

**The Marxist account** treats religion as ideological. Its content reflects material conditions, and its social function is to reconcile the subordinated to their position by relocating redress to another world — 'the sigh of the oppressed creature' being simultaneously a protest against real suffering and an obstacle to addressing it. This explains religion's frequent alignment with existing power well, and struggles with cases where religion has been the vehicle of revolt rather than of acquiescence.

**Verdict.** The three are not straightforwardly rivals, because they answer different questions — Durkheim asks what religion does for a society, Weber what it does to a believer's conduct, and Marx whose interests it serves. Their genuine incompatibility is narrower and concerns direction of causation, where Weber's comparative programme is the more empirically ambitious. For Indian material the three are most useful in combination: Durkheim illuminates ritual and festival as solidarity-producing, a Marxist reading illuminates the relationship between ritual hierarchy and land control, and Weber's framework is what makes sense of religious reform movements as agents of social change rather than as epiphenomena of it.

Question 5

A candidate answers 'Discuss the changing nature of agrarian class structure in India' by describing land reforms, the Green Revolution, and current farm distress with statistics. Diagnose and rebuild.

Accepted Answer

Diagnosis: this is GS3 with a sociology heading. The material is accurate; there is no class analysis, no Indian sociologist, and no engagement with the debate the question is pointing at. The word 'class' appears in the question and does no work in the answer.

Rebuild, using the frame the question requires:

Open by noting that agrarian class in India cannot be read off landholding alone, because relations of production and the caste order have historically been superimposed — which is what makes the Indian agrarian structure a distinctive theoretical problem rather than an instance of a general model.

Then the **mode of production debate**, which is the discipline's central engagement with this question: whether post-independence Indian agriculture was becoming capitalist, remained semi-feudal, or constituted a distinct formation. **Utsa Patnaik** identified capitalist development on the basis of the labour-exploitation criterion; the semi-feudal position pointed to interlocked markets in land, credit and labour that bound tenants in ways wage relations do not; and **Daniel Thorner's** classification of maliks, kisans and mazdoors offered a structure defined by relation to land and labour rather than by holding size. The debate matters because each position implies a different account of what would transform the structure.

Then the transformations, read through that frame rather than reported. **Land reform** abolished intermediary tenures fairly effectively and redistributed land very little, so its principal effect was to convert former intermediaries into a class of substantial owner-cultivators rather than to create a peasantry. The **Green Revolution** then differentiated that class internally: those with irrigation, credit access and marketable surplus capitalised, while smallholders faced rising input costs without corresponding scale — producing the differentiation **Beteille** and others documented, and converting a hierarchy of tenure into a hierarchy of capital.

Then the contemporary structure: the emergence of a dominant-caste rich peasantry whose power is political as much as economic, the enormous expansion of a class of small and marginal cultivators who are also wage labourers, and the growing detachment of rural livelihoods from agriculture altogether — which raises the question of whether agrarian class is still the right unit.

Close on the analytical point: the decoupling **Beteille** identified in Sripuram, between ritual status, economic class and political power, has advanced furthest in agriculture, which is why caste continues to predict agrarian position without determining it.

Same subject, and now it is sociology.

Question 6

Explain what each directive requires and how the answer differs: 'Critically examine', 'Discuss with reference to', 'Comment', 'Elucidate'.

Accepted Answer

**Critically examine.** The critique is compulsory and must be substantive rather than a concluding caveat. The structure that satisfies it: state the position accurately, present the evidence and reasoning supporting it, present the documented objections, and reach a judgment on which holds and under what conditions. An answer that explains the position well and adds 'however, it has been criticised' in a final line has not been critical, and this is the most commonly under-satisfied directive in the paper.

**Discuss with reference to.** The named reference is not optional and not a suggestion. If the question says 'with reference to village studies', an answer drawing on general rural sociology fails the directive however good it is, because the examiner is checking whether you know that specific literature. Name the works or authors the reference points to, and organise the answer around them.

**Comment.** The shortest register, usually attached to 10-mark parts. It asks for a considered position on a specific claim rather than a survey — state what the claim asserts, whether it holds, and the single most important qualification. Length discipline matters more here than anywhere: 150 words that take a position beat 300 that survey.

**Elucidate.** Make clear, with explanation and illustration. Less critical demand than 'critically examine' and more explanatory demand than 'comment' — the examiner wants the concept unpacked and exemplified, so an answer that spends its space on critique has misread the instruction.

The general discipline: read the directive before planning, and satisfy it literally. Sociology examiners set these deliberately, and a well-written answer to the wrong directive is a predictable and avoidable loss.

Question 7

Show how one Paper I concept — Merton's manifest and latent functions — can be applied to three different Paper II questions.

Accepted Answer

The concept: Merton distinguished **manifest functions**, the intended and recognised consequences of a social arrangement, from **latent functions**, the unintended and unrecognised ones — and added **dysfunctions**, consequences that reduce adaptation. The analytical payoff is that an institution can persist because of consequences nobody intends and few acknowledge, which is precisely what a purely intentional account cannot explain.

**Applied to reservation policy.** Manifest function: compensating historical exclusion and securing representation in public employment and education. Latent functions: the consolidation of caste as a category of political mobilisation, since a benefit attached to a group strengthens the group's salience; the emergence of a mobile stratum within beneficiary communities whose interests then diverge from the rest, which is the sociological content of the 'creamy layer' debate; and the conversion of caste from a ritual category into an administrative and electoral one. None of these is an argument for or against the policy — they are what a sociologist can say that a policy analyst cannot.

**Applied to the Green Revolution.** Manifest function: raising foodgrain output and securing self-sufficiency. Latent functions: the differentiation of the peasantry into capitalising and non-capitalising strata, the strengthening of dominant-caste political power through agricultural surplus, altered patterns of labour migration between regions, and the water-energy-cropping arrangement that later became the region's principal ecological problem. Dysfunction: the ecological consequences that reduced long-run adaptation in the very districts the programme most benefited.

**Applied to modern education.** Manifest function: transmitting skills and knowledge. Latent functions, following Merton and the later reproduction literature: the sorting of a population into credentialed strata, the legitimation of resulting inequality as merit-based, and the delay of entry into the labour market. In the Indian case the specific latent function worth naming is the conversion of caste-based advantage into class-based advantage through differential access to the language and schooling that credentials require — which is why formal openness of the system has coexisted with highly unequal outcomes.

The general lesson for the paper: a Paper I concept used explicitly on Indian material is the most reliable way to lift a Paper II answer out of the General Studies register, and Merton's distinction is the most widely transferable of them.

Question 8

Build a comparison table on perspectives on caste — Ghurye, Srinivas, Dumont, Beteille — and write the verdict that must sit underneath it.

Accepted Answer

**Ghurye** — Indological and historical, working from textual and ethnographic sources. Caste is a system defined by identifiable features: segmental division, hierarchy, restrictions on commensality and social intercourse, civil and religious disabilities, lack of unrestricted occupational choice, and restrictions on marriage. Change enters through external contact and modern forces. Limitation: the textual orientation privileges the normative order over observed practice, and the feature-list is descriptive rather than explanatory.

**Srinivas** — structural-functionalist, working from village fieldwork. Caste is a lived local hierarchy in which position is contestable, mediated by the **dominant caste** whose power rests on landholding, numerical strength and ritual rank in combination. Change occurs through **sanskritisation** and **westernisation** — positional mobility within an intact structure. Limitation: understates conflict and structural transformation, and takes the upper-caste model as the direction of aspiration.

**Dumont** — structuralist, working from an opposition of principles. Caste is fundamentally **ideological**, organised by the opposition of pure and impure, and hierarchy in this sense encompasses its opposite rather than merely ranking. Power is subordinated to status, and the individual is absent as a value. Change is largely denied at the level of the ideological order. Limitation: the empirical critique is severe — power and status frequently do not behave as the model requires — and the account is criticised for reproducing a Brahminical view of caste as the view of caste.

**Beteille** — empirical and comparative, working from stratification theory. Caste is one dimension of a stratification system that also contains class and power, and the sociologically interesting fact is the **changing relation among them**. Change occurs as these dimensions **decouple**, so that ritual status, economic position and political power increasingly vary independently. Limitation: the framework travels well and specifies less about caste's distinctiveness than the others do.

**Verdict.** The four are not competing descriptions of one object but investigations organised by different questions, and their ordering is close to a disciplinary history — from the textual to the observed to the structural to the relational. For contemporary Indian material, Beteille's decoupling frame has the strongest explanatory reach, because it accounts for the otherwise puzzling coexistence of persistent caste endogamy and marked economic mobility. But it cannot supply what Dumont attempted, which is an account of why caste took the specific form it did rather than the form of any other stratification system, and any answer that discards the ideological question entirely has explained caste's operation while leaving its distinctiveness unexplained.
