**The counter-case.** Religious participation has not declined uniformly, and has risen in several regions and traditions. Religion has proved capable of powerful political and identity mobilisation under fully modern conditions. **Revivalism** and **fundamentalism** are the strongest evidence: fundamentalism is not the persistence of tradition but a distinctively modern movement — asserting textual inerrancy against modern interpretation, seeking to order public life by it, and deploying modern organisational, financial and communication techniques. It is a response to modernity, not a survival from before it. **The resolution** requires separating levels, and this is what distinguishes a strong answer.

At the level of **institutional differentiation**, the thesis is well supported. Across a wide range of societies religious institutions have lost control over education, law, welfare and administration, and this is not seriously contested even by the thesis's critics.

At the level of **individual belief and practice**, support is weak and regionally patchy. Decline in Western Europe is real; it is not the global pattern, and treating it as the norm is precisely the ethnocentrism the critics identify.

At the level of **political salience**, the thesis is contradicted. Religion's capacity to organise political identity and mobilise collective action has risen rather than fallen over recent decades.

**Verdict.** What modernity produces is not the disappearance of religion but the **relocation** of it: from being the encompassing framework of collective life, in which membership was ascribed and unquestioned, to being one basis of identity among others, chosen and asserted, and therefore available for political mobilisation in ways an unquestioned canopy never was. That is arguably a more consequential transformation than decline would have been, and it explains why secularisation and religious resurgence are observed simultaneously rather than being alternatives.

For **India**, the point is sharpened by the constitutional meaning of secularism, which is not the privatisation of religion but the state's equidistance from all religions — a different arrangement from the Western separation model, and one that presupposes religion's continued public presence rather than its retreat.

**The sexual division of labour** is the core institutional expression. Its sociological interest lies in two features: the specific tasks assigned to each sex vary enormously across societies, which defeats a straightforwardly biological explanation, while the fact of division and the lower valuation of women's tasks are near-universal. It is therefore the *valuation* rather than the allocation that demands explanation.

**The competing explanations.**

**Liberal feminism** locates the problem in unequal access, legal disability and socialisation into restrictive roles, and the remedy in reform — equal rights, equal access to education and employment, and changed attitudes. Its strength is that this programme has demonstrably delivered gains; its weakness is that it treats the public sphere as the site of the problem and takes the private division largely as given, so it cannot explain why formal equality has coexisted with a persistent unequal distribution of domestic work.

**Marxist feminism** connects subordination to property and to capitalism's requirement that labour power be reproduced daily and generationally at no cost to capital — unpaid domestic labour performing that function. The **domestic labour debate** turns on whether such work produces value or merely use-value, and on whether the beneficiary is capital or individual men. Its strength is the connection between the household and the wider economy; its weakness is that patriarchy predates capitalism and persists under non-capitalist arrangements, which the account struggles to explain.

Four families of theory, distinguished by what they take the source of change to be.

**Evolutionary theories** hold that societies pass through determinate stages of increasing complexity — Comte's theological, metaphysical and positive stages; Spencer's movement from simple to compound and from military to industrial; Morgan's savagery, barbarism and civilisation. Their appeal was that they made history intelligible as direction. Their defects are decisive: **unilinearity**, assuming a single path all societies traverse; **ethnocentrism**, since the endpoint is invariably the theorist's own society; and an inability to explain the enormous variation in observed trajectories. **Neo-evolutionary** work salvaged the framework by going multilinear — different societies follow different paths depending on their conditions — at the cost of the predictive ambition that made the original attractive.

**Cyclical theories** deny direction altogether. Spengler treated civilisations as organisms with a life cycle ending in decline; Toynbee explained rise and fall through challenge and response, with a creative minority degenerating into a merely dominant one; **Sorokin** proposed alternation between ideational, sensate and idealistic cultural systems, driven by **immanent change** — each system exhausts its own possibilities and generates the conditions for its successor. Their strength is that they take decline seriously, which progressive theories cannot. Their weakness is that the organic analogy is asserted rather than demonstrated, and the periodisation is unfalsifiable.

**Functionalist theories** treat change as movement toward a new equilibrium. Parsons's later evolutionary work specifies four mechanisms — **differentiation** of functions into specialised structures, **adaptive upgrading** of capacity, **inclusion** of previously excluded groups, and **value generalisation** to accommodate greater diversity. Its strength is that it identifies real processes and explains gradual institutional change well. Its weaknesses are that it treats change as adjustment rather than as transformation, cannot accommodate rapid or conflictual change, and has a conservative entailment — whatever emerges is shown to have raised adaptive capacity.

**Conflict theories** treat change as intrinsic rather than as disturbance. In **Marx** it arises from the developing contradiction between forces and relations of production, realised through class struggle. **Dahrendorf** generalised beyond property, locating conflict in **authority relations** within any imperatively coordinated association, so conflict persists where property has been socialised — an amendment that saves the framework from the failure of Marx's specific prediction. The strength is that conflict theory explains rapid and discontinuous change, which functionalism cannot; the weakness is that it explains stability less well, since societies exhibit long periods of order that a theory of intrinsic contradiction must account for.

**Applied to developing societies**, the competing frameworks are **modernisation** and **dependency**.

**Modernisation theory** treats development as a transition from traditional to modern along a broadly single path, with obstacles located **internally** — in traditional values, ascriptive institutions and attitudes lacking achievement orientation. Rostow supplied the economic stages, Parsons's pattern variables the sociological content, McClelland the psychological mechanism. Its policy implication was **diffusion**: capital, technology and values transmitted from developed societies would set the transition going.

**Dependency theory** inverts the explanation. Dependency theory correctly identified the external structuring of possibilities and the historical role of colonial extraction, and it explains stagnation well; it explains **growth** poorly, and the substantial industrialisation of parts of the periphery is a serious problem for its stronger formulations. It also underplays **internal class structures and state capacity**, which the comparative record suggests are decisive — the divergence between countries at similar positions in the world economy is best explained by what their states and elites did, not by their external position.

**Verdict.** No single framework suffices, and the most defensible position specifies a division of labour. Dependency and world-systems analysis correctly describe the **external constraint structure** within which developing societies act. Conflict theory, in Dahrendorf's generalised form, explains the **internal dynamics** — struggles over land, authority and inclusion — that determine what a society does within that structure. Functionalist differentiation describes the **institutional processes** through which change is absorbed. Modernisation theory survives only as a description of some observed correlates of industrialisation, stripped of its causal claim and of the single path.

For **India** specifically, the most useful framing has been that change occurs through the interaction of external incorporation, state action, and internally generated conflict over caste and land — which is why sociologists of Indian change have generally worked with the conflict tradition while borrowing dependency's account of the constraints.

Is education an agent of social change or of social reproduction? Examine.

Both, and the sociologically interesting question is what determines which predominates in a given society.

**The case for change.** The functionalist account, following Durkheim and Parsons, assigns education three functions. It **transmits shared values**, which Durkheim regarded as essential in a differentiated society where the family can no longer supply a common moral framework. It **allocates individuals to positions** by achievement rather than ascription — Parsons's classroom being the child's first experience of universalistic and specific evaluation, a transition from the particularistic and diffuse relations of the family. And it **modernises attitudes**, supplying the achievement orientation and technical competence an industrial economy requires. The empirical case is real: expansion of schooling correlates with mobility, women's education has strong measurable effects on health and fertility, and formal openness has admitted groups historically excluded.

**The case for reproduction.** **Bourdieu** argues that schooling converts inherited advantage into apparent merit. **Cultural capital** — the dispositions, linguistic facility, familiarity with legitimate culture and confidence in institutional settings that schooling presupposes but does not teach — is unequally distributed by family background. Where the gap between home and school culture is small, formal openness translates into genuine mobility; where it is very large, as between a first-generation learner in a regional-language home and an English-medium curriculum, the same formal openness sorts rather than lifts.

Second, **whether the system is internally stratified**. A single common school produces different results from a system in which fee-paying, aided and government schools deliver sharply different quality — because in the second, choice of school does the sorting before any assessment occurs, and the credential's value tracks the institution rather than the learning.

Third, **whether credentials are absorbed by the labour market**. Education has been a genuine channel of mobility, particularly for groups accessing public employment through reservation, and its effect on women's outcomes is among the strongest findings in the development literature. It has simultaneously reproduced advantage with great efficiency, through the language of instruction, the stratification of school types, private tuition and coaching, and the conversion of parental education into children's attainment. Both statements are true, and the mechanism connecting them is that **access was universalised faster than quality was equalised** — which converted a system that excluded openly into one that sorts quietly, and made the resulting hierarchy harder to challenge because it now looks like the outcome of ability.

Tilly and McAdam argued that mobilisation depends on the **political opportunity structure** — the openness of the political system, the stability of elite alignments, the presence of elite allies, and the state's propensity and capacity for repression. Movements emerge when the configuration makes action viable and cease when it closes, which explains the clustering of movements in time and their diffusion across issues within a period. This is the most complete of the structural accounts and the best supported.

**New social movement theory** attacked all of the above for assuming that movements pursue **distributional** goals. Touraine, Melucci and Habermas argued that post-industrial movements differ in kind: they are organised around **identity, autonomy and quality of life** rather than material distribution; they draw a **middle-class** rather than working-class base; they use **loose, networked, participatory** organisation rather than hierarchy; and they operate in civil society and culture rather than principally through the state. The environmental, women's, peace and identity movements are the illustrations. The critique is that the novelty is overstated — earlier movements also had identity dimensions, and contemporary movements retain distributional demands — and that the framework fits Western European experience better than others.

**Comparative assessment.** No single theory suffices, and each answers a different question. **Why does a grievance exist?** Strain and relative deprivation. **Why now?** Political opportunity structure. **Why these people?** Resource mobilisation and network position. **Why this form and these demands?** New social movement theory and framing analysis, which examines how movements construct interpretations that make action seem necessary and possible.

**For Indian movements** the combination is instructive. Peasant and farmers' movements are best explained by relative deprivation and resource mobilisation together, since they have arisen among relatively better-off cultivators with organisational capacity rather than among the most deprived agricultural labourers. Dalit movements require both political opportunity — constitutional guarantees and electoral arithmetic creating openings — and a strong identity dimension that resource theory alone cannot capture. Environmental movements in India complicate new social movement theory decisively, since they have frequently been **livelihood** movements of forest-dwellers and fishers rather than post-material movements of the comfortable, which is why the Western framework requires substantial amendment before it travels.

Distinguish church, sect, denomination and cult as sociological types. (150 words)

The typology derives from Troeltsch and Weber and classifies religious organisations by their relation to the wider society and to their own members.

A **church** is large, institutionalised and bureaucratic, with a professional clergy and formal hierarchy. Membership is typically ascribed — one is born into it — and it is **accommodated** to the wider society, often claiming universality and sometimes allied to the state.

A **sect** is smaller, voluntary and demands intense commitment, frequently exclusive in its claim to truth. It stands in **tension** with the wider society, is often formed by schism from a church, and characteristically has charismatic rather than bureaucratic leadership.

A **denomination** is a sect that has **accommodated**: it retains voluntary membership and organisational separateness but has lost the tension, accepting the legitimacy of other bodies. Niebuhr's account of the sect-to-denomination transition, driven by the routinisation that follows the founder's death and by the social mobility of members, is the standard reference.

A **cult**, in the sociological rather than pejorative sense, is loose, individualistic and innovative, often importing beliefs from other traditions, making few demands and lacking formal boundaries of membership.

Question 13

Show how the stratification theories from Unit 5 apply to the analysis of gender, and what each misses.

Gender is the sharpest test of the three stratification theories, because it is a form of structured inequality that none of them was designed to explain.

**The functionalist account.** Parsons treated the sexual division of labour within the family as functional specialisation: the **instrumental** role of provision and external relations and the **expressive** role of internal cohesion and emotional management, allocated by sex, avoid role competition within the household and provide the stable socialising environment an industrial economy requires by supplying a mobile nuclear unit.

*What it misses:* everything Tumin's critique of Davis and Moore identified, and more. Functional importance is again unmeasurable and circular. It ignores **power** — the allocation is not a neutral solution to a coordination problem but reflects and reproduces men's control of resources. It cannot explain **cross-cultural variation** in which tasks are assigned to which sex, which defeats any functional necessity account. And it treats the arrangement's dysfunctions — the waste of women's capacities, the isolation of the housewife, the dependence that domestic violence exploits — as incidental. Its conservative entailment is at its most visible here: what exists is shown to be functional, and change is therefore disturbance.

**The Marxist account.** Engels traced women's subordination to the emergence of private property: once there was surplus to transmit, certainty of paternity became necessary, and monogamous marriage with female sexual restriction followed — the world-historical defeat of the female sex. Marxist feminism extended this to capitalism's requirement that labour power be reproduced daily and generationally, with unpaid domestic work performing that function at no cost to capital, and women constituting a reserve army of labour drawn in and expelled as demand requires.

*What it misses:* patriarchy **predates capitalism and private property**, and persists under socialist and non-capitalist arrangements, which the account cannot explain without abandoning its own causal claim. It cannot explain why it is **women specifically** who perform reproduction rather than any subordinated group. And it treats the beneficiary as capital when the immediate beneficiary is frequently individual men, whose interest in the arrangement does not derive from their class position — the point radical feminists press hardest.

**The Weberian account.** This is the most serviceable of the three, and the reason is its **multi-dimensionality**. Gender is analysable as a **status** order: a system of social honour with differential valuation, enforced by **social closure** — restrictions on association, on entry to occupations, on public presence. The independence of the dimensions then does real work, because it explains configurations the other two cannot: a woman may hold high class position and low status honour, or command significant party power while being excluded from status circles. Weber's concept of closure also captures the mechanisms precisely — exclusion from guilds, professions, inheritance and public space are closure practices, not functional allocations.

*What it misses:* Weber's own writing gave gender almost no attention, so this is an application rather than an exposition. More substantively, the scheme **describes** gender stratification well and does not **explain** its origin — it tells us that closure occurs without telling us why this particular boundary was drawn and universally. And its focus on market position understates the household, which is the institution where gender stratification is principally reproduced and which lies largely outside the market.

**What all three miss, and the corrective.** None accommodates the **household as a site of production and distribution**, so the unpaid work through which gender inequality is chiefly reproduced falls outside all three frameworks. None handles **intersectionality**: the position of a Dalit woman agricultural labourer is not derivable by adding caste, class and gender, because the dimensions modify one another rather than summing. And all three treat gender as a distributional question, whereas a substantial part of the phenomenon concerns **identity and the body** — control over sexuality, reproduction and mobility — which distributional frameworks register only indirectly.

**Verdict.** The Weberian framework supplies the best available vocabulary, the Marxist supplies the strongest account of the household's economic function, and the functionalist survives only as an object of critique. But gender is the case that most clearly demonstrates the limits of classical stratification theory, which was built to analyse hierarchies among households and is correspondingly weak on hierarchies within them.

Question 14

Distinguish descent, lineage and clan, and explain why matriliny is not matriarchy. (150 words)

Accepted Answer

**Descent** is the socially recognised rule by which group membership, property and ritual obligation are transmitted across generations. **Patrilineal** descent traces through males, **matrilineal** through females, **bilateral** through both, and **double descent** transmits different rights through each line.

A **lineage** is a descent group whose members trace their relationship to a **known** common ancestor through documented or remembered links. A **clan** is a larger unit claiming descent from a **putative** ancestor, where the genealogical connections cannot be traced and are often mythical, frequently symbolised by a totem. The distinction is one of demonstrability, and it matters because lineages regulate concrete claims on property while clans regulate exogamy and identity.

**Matriliny is not matriarchy.** Matriliny concerns descent, inheritance and group membership through the female line. **Authority** in matrilineal systems typically rests not with women but with the **mother's brother**, who exercises jural control over his sister's children and her property. Matriarchy would mean rule by women, for which no clearly attested society exists. Confusing the two is among the most common errors in kinship answers.

Question 15

Examine dependency theory and assess its adequacy in explaining the trajectories of developing economies.

Accepted Answer

**The theory.** Dependency theory arose as a rejection of modernisation theory's claim that underdevelopment is an **original** condition to be overcome by internal transformation. **Frank's** central proposition inverts this: underdevelopment is **actively produced** by incorporation into the world economy on unequal terms, so that the same historical process which developed the metropolis underdeveloped the satellite. The mechanism is a chain of **metropolis-satellite** relations running from world centres through national capitals to provincial towns and villages, each extracting surplus upward, so that peripheral regions are not outside the system but are structurally subordinated within it. The policy conclusion is that greater integration deepens dependency rather than relieving it, which pointed toward delinking and autarkic industrialisation.

**Wallerstein's world-systems** analysis generalised the argument. There is one capitalist world-economy with a single division of labour and multiple states, divided into **core**, **semi-periphery** and **periphery** by the kind of production each performs — core states specialising in capital-intensive, high-wage production and the periphery in labour-intensive, low-wage extraction. The **semi-periphery** is the analytically important addition: it both exploits and is exploited, and it stabilises the system politically by preventing a simple bipolar confrontation between core and periphery.

**Strengths.** The theory correctly identified that development cannot be analysed within national boundaries, since a country's possibilities are structured by its position in a world division of labour it did not choose. It supplied a historically grounded account of **colonial extraction** and its consequences, which modernisation theory had entirely omitted by treating the colonial period as a diffusion of modernity. It explained the observed **persistence** of unequal terms of trade and of specialisation patterns. And it correctly predicted that capital inflow would frequently be accompanied by larger outflows in profit, interest and royalties.

**Weaknesses, which are serious.** The theory explains **stagnation** well and **growth** poorly, and substantial industrialisation in parts of the periphery — East Asia most conspicuously — is a direct falsification of the stronger formulations, since these were countries deeply integrated into world markets that nonetheless moved from periphery to core. Its **internal blindness** is equally damaging: by locating causation externally it underplays domestic class structures, land regimes, and above all **state capacity**, which the comparative record suggests explains most of the divergence between countries occupying similar external positions. Its **policy conclusion** was refuted in practice, as import-substituting and delinking strategies generally underperformed export-oriented ones. And its account of the state is thin, treating it as an agent of comprador interests when the developmental states of East Asia demonstrably were not.

**Assessment.** Dependency theory is best retained as an account of **constraint** rather than of **outcome**. It correctly specifies the structural environment within which developing societies act — unequal terms of trade, technological dependence, capital mobility, and the historical inheritance of extractive colonial economies. It does not determine what a society does within that environment, and the evidence indicates that internal factors — the character of the state, the balance of class forces, land distribution, and investment in human capital — account for most of the observed variation.

**For India** the framework has been influential and requires qualification of exactly this kind. The critique of colonial extraction and of drain is well founded historically and is the intellectual ancestor of Indian nationalist economics. But the post-independence trajectory — a large state-led industrial sector, slow growth for three decades, and acceleration following liberalisation — cannot be read off external position, and the sharp divergence in outcomes **between Indian states** facing identical external conditions is the clearest available demonstration that the internal variables do the explanatory work.
