Noses & The Little Fir Tree
Part 1 — Noses (Poem by Aileen Fisher)
"I looked in the mirror / And looked at my nose: / It's the funniest thing, / The way it grows."
About the Poem
The poet looks in the mirror and wonders about her NOSE. It's stuck right in the middle of her face — between her hair and her chin. Why does it grow that way? It's FUNNY! But it's also very useful — for breathing and smelling.
Fun Questions
- What would happen if your nose grew on top of your head?
- Why do you think your nose has TWO holes (nostrils)?

Part 2 — The Little Fir Tree
The Story
In a forest, there was a LITTLE FIR TREE. It was pretty and green, with soft needles. But the fir tree was UNHAPPY.
What It Wished For:
- First: 'I wish I had GOLD leaves instead of these green needles.' A magician granted its wish. But a GOAT came and ate all the gold leaves. 'Oh dear!'
- Then: 'I wish I had GLASS leaves. No goat will eat glass.' The magician granted this too. But the WIND blew, and all the glass leaves SHATTERED. 'Oh dear!'
- Then: 'I wish I had GREEN LEAVES like other trees.' The magician granted it. The fir tree looked BEAUTIFUL — big, broad green leaves. But then came heavy RAIN and the leaves were DAMAGED.
The Final Wish:
- The little fir tree finally said: 'I wish for my NEEDLES back — the ones I had before. They weren't broken by the wind. They weren't eaten by the goat.'
- It got its needles back. And it was HAPPY.
