A Trip to Bhopal

"When you go on a trip, you do maths without even realising it!"

1. What You Will Learn

  • Solving WORD PROBLEMS using real-life situations
  • Using all four operations (+, —, ×, ÷)
  • Calculating costs, distances, and times
  • Logical reasoning and estimation

2. The Story Problem

A school is planning a TRIP TO BHOPAL. There are 210 children and 18 teachers going. The school needs to arrange:

  • BUSES (each bus takes 50 people)
  • FOOD (each child needs snacks and water)
  • TICKETS for the museum

Let's Solve Together:

How Many Buses?

  • Total people = 210 + 18 = 228 people
  • Each bus carries 50 people
  • Number of buses = 228 ÷ 50
  • 4 buses carry 4 × 50 = 200 people
  • 1 more bus for the remaining 28 people
  • Answer: 5 buses

How Much for Tickets?

  • Museum ticket per person: ₹10
  • Total people: 228
  • Total cost: 228 × 10 = ₹2,280

3. Time and Distance

  • The trip starts at 8:00 AM
  • The distance to Bhopal is 120 km
  • The bus travels at 60 km per hour
  • Time taken = 120 ÷ 60 = 2 hours
  • Arrival time: 8:00 AM + 2 hours = 10:00 AM

On the Way Back

  • They leave Bhopal at 4:00 PM
  • They stop for 30 minutes at a dhaba for snacks
  • They reach school at 6:30 PM
  • Total time on the way back: 2 hours 30 minutes — 30 minutes stop = 2 hours driving

4. Practice Problems

  1. 315 students are going on a trip. Each bus carries 45 students. How many buses are needed? (Answer: 7 buses — 6 full + 1 for remaining 45)

  2. A bus travels 55 km in 1 hour. How far will it travel in 4 hours? (Answer: 220 km)

  3. A trip starts at 7:30 AM and ends at 2:00 PM. How long is the trip? (Answer: 6 hours 30 minutes)

  4. There are 250 children. Each child gets 2 samosas. How many samosas are needed in total? (Answer: 500)

  5. The total cost of the trip is ₹12,500. If 250 children share the cost equally, how much does each child pay? (Answer: ₹50)

5. Fun Activity
