The Way the World Looks
"The same thing looks different from different sides. That's how maps work!"
1. What You Will Learn
- Different VIEWS of an object (top, side, front)
- How maps show a 'top view' (bird's-eye view)
- Directions on a map (North, South, East, West)
- Reading simple MAPS
2. Different Views of Objects
Look at a CHAIR:
- From the FRONT: You see the seat and two front legs
- From the SIDE: You see the seat, the side bar, and legs in a line
- From the TOP: You see the seat — just a rectangle
Activity: Look at your school bag from the front, side, and top. Draw what you see from EACH view.
3. Maps — A Bird's-Eye View
A MAP is like looking at things from the TOP — like a bird flying high above.
When you look at your classroom from above:
- The desks look like small RECTANGLES
- The blackboard looks like a LONG LINE
- The door looks like a thin RECTANGLE
What a Map Tells You:
- Where things ARE
- How to GET from one place to another
- The SHAPE and SIZE of places
4. Directions on a Map
| Direction | Symbol |
|---|---|
| North | ↑ |
| South | ↓ |
| East | → |
| West | ← |
Memory Trick: Never Eat Soggy Wafers → North, East, South, West (clockwise)
5. Fun Activity
Draw a Map of Your Classroom:
- Imagine you're a bird on the ceiling looking DOWN
- Draw rectangles for desks, the teacher's table, the door
- Mark where YOU sit
- Add directions (N, S, E, W)
Identify the View:
- A car from ABOVE looks like a _______
- A tree from the SIDE looks like a _______
- A book from the TOP looks like a _______
