Little by Little

About the Poem

Poet: Unknown (Traditional) What it is about: A tiny ACORN grows — little by little — into a BIG, STRONG OAK TREE. It teaches us about PATIENCE and GROWTH.

The Poem

'Little by little,' an acorn said,
As it slowly sank in its mossy bed,
'I am improving every day,
Hidden deep in the earth away.'

Little by little, each day it grew;
Little by little, it sipped the dew.
Downward the roots began to grow;
Upward the tiny shoot was sent.

Little by little the leaves appeared;
Little by little the stem was reared.
And the little acorn, year by year,
Grew into a great oak tree.

Understanding the Poem

What is an Acorn?

An ACORN is the SEED of an OAK TREE. It is small, brown, and has a little 'cap' on top.

The Journey of the Acorn

StageWhat Happens
1The acorn FALLS to the ground
2It SINKS into the soft soil (mossy bed)
3It SLEEPS hidden deep in the earth
4It SIPs dew and NUTRIENTS from the soil
5ROOTS grow DOWNWARD
6A SHOOT grows UPWARD
7LEAVES appear
8The STEM becomes STRONGER
9Year by year, it becomes a GREAT OAK TREE

The Meaning of 'Little by Little'

'LITTLE BY LITTLE' means SLOWLY, STEP BY STEP, ONE SMALL CHANGE AT A TIME.

Examples in Our Life

  • Learning to read: First letters, then words, then sentences, then books
  • Learning to cycle: First with training wheels, then without, then racing
  • Growing taller: Every year a little bit more
  • Saving money: One rupee at a time adds up to a lot!

The Message

Big changes happen SLOWLY. Be PATIENT. Keep GROWING every day, even if the change is small.

Repetition

'Little by little' is REPEATED many times. This makes the poem feel GENTLE and SLOW, like the acorn's growth.

What We Can Learn

1. Patience

Good things take TIME. You cannot rush growth — a tree takes YEARS to grow tall.

2. Small Steps Matter

Every SMALL step leads to something BIG. The acorn does not become a tree in one day!

3. Growth Requires Roots

The acorn's ROOTS grow FIRST, grounding it. We also need a STRONG FOUNDATION — learning basics before harder things.

4. Nature is Wonderful

From one tiny SEED comes a MIGHTY TREE. Nature is AMAZING!

Common Mistakes

  1. 'An acorn is a type of tree.' — No! An acorn is the SEED of an oak tree. The oak tree GROWS from the acorn.

  2. 'Little by little means doing everything at once.' — No! It means doing things SLOWLY, STEP BY STEP.

  3. 'The acorn grows in one day.' — No! Year by year, the acorn grows. It takes MANY years to become a big tree.

  4. 'Roots grow upward and shoots grow downward.' — No! ROOTS grow DOWN (into the earth) and SHOOTS grow UP (toward the sun).
